Legends to the Illustrations<br />

(a) Offer<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> the paddies, for the young rice seedl<strong>in</strong>gs, recently transplanted from their<br />

nursery, should be brought everywhere. Note that some are on the ground (caru), dest<strong>in</strong>ed for the<br />

nether worldly be<strong>in</strong>gs (bhuta kala) with the <strong>in</strong>tention that they will be satisfied, will do no harm<br />

and retire. Those on the platform (banten) are dest<strong>in</strong>ed for the gods, especially the goddess Sri.<br />

Note also the hang<strong>in</strong>g offer<strong>in</strong>g of plaited palm leaves.<br />

(b 1) Landscape with (partially brick) offer<strong>in</strong>g niche. Unless clouds cover the mounta<strong>in</strong>s, their<br />

cha<strong>in</strong> is always visible.<br />
