the mother of K<strong>in</strong>g Erlangga who married a Javanese pr<strong>in</strong>cess.<br />

(g 3) The benevolent god Wisnu, mounted on his vehicle, the awe <strong>in</strong>spir<strong>in</strong>g bird Garuda. Note<br />

the polèng cloth adorn<strong>in</strong>g the sculpture.<br />

(g 4) This sculpture on a cross road has as his function to deter the god Kala <strong>in</strong> particular and the<br />

bhuta kala <strong>in</strong> general. Like (g 1) he is weaponed with a k<strong>in</strong>d of sabre, whereas g 3 manipulates a<br />

(ritual) bell. A priest's bell as its handle has a vajra, thunderbolt. The padanda Bodha, Buddhist<br />

brahman priest, on top of that handles a double vajra as a ritual <strong>in</strong>strument. It makes all the<br />

difference whether dur<strong>in</strong>g his ritual he worships and <strong>in</strong>vites the celestial gods, us<strong>in</strong>g a flower, or<br />

tries to chase off the netherworldly bhuta kala <strong>by</strong> means of bell (provided with bajra) and<br />

(double) bajra.<br />
