THINGS TO KNOW
Identity Theft – Alabama’s New Security
Measures
To help curb identity theft the State of Alabama
is trying out a mobile application and submission
of a selfie as a security measure. The
Alabama
Department
of Revenue
is the first in
the country
to launch a
voluntary program
designed
to add an
extra security
measure to
prevent the filing
of fraudulent
returns
using stolen
taxpayer
information.
If you have an iPhone, you can download an
app and establish a credential by scanning your
driver’s license, taking a selfie and registering
with the Department of Revenue. The selfie is
cross referenced to the photo on your license.
When a tax return is filed in your name you’ll
get a message from the Department of Revenue
asking you to authenticate it by taking another
photo and then approving or denying the return
filing. Georgia is the next in line to give it a try.
If the program is effective, expect more states
to adopt the new program.
Driver Safety – Deadliest Driving Days
According to statistics from AAA, the most
dangerous driving days are the 100 days from
Memorial Day. During that period of time,
about 1,000 people in the United States die in
crashes with vehicles driven by teenagers ages
16 to 19 - a 16% higher death rate per day than
at other times of the year.
Money – Digital Transfers to become
Commonplace
Digital transfers of money will soon be the
norm as more people turn to smartphones and
other electronic
devices to split
the cost of dinner,
travel, gifts
and more with
friends, relatives
and others. The
Bay & Bay
Transportation Expands
Presence in North
Central Texas
Bay & Bay Transportation has expanded
its presence in the north central Texas market
by opening a new terminal in Denton, Texas.
The new
location
will make
it possible
for company
drivers and
owner operators
who live in Texas and across the South
to have a maintenance and parking facility
closer to home, according to Bay & Bay
Transportation President Sam Anderson.
“We are always concerned about the
safety of our drivers,” he said. “We had this
in mind when planning our parking area and
terminal to be a secure location and safe
haven for our drivers.”
The location comprises a four-bay
maintenance shop, wash-out area, fuel island,
driver lounge with showers and laundry and
more than 100 parking spaces.
Tim Flanigan, Bay & Bay vice president
of operations, said the new terminal is ideally
situated. “It is near the Interstate 35 split on
the north side of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro
area, so it positions our company drivers and
contractors close to customer locations in a
market where we continue to grow,” Flanigan
said. “Texas is also a top state for us from a
company driver and owner operator hiring
standpoint, so providing a shop and fuel
island, along with a comfortable lounge, was
important to us.”
Headquartered in Eagan, Minn., Bay &
Bay is among the top 25 list of the top U.S.
and Canadian refrigerated carriers. Learn
Chicagoland
XPO Logistics has concluded a major
expansion of its last mile logistics network
for our services as consumers gain confidence
in making major purchases online,”
said Charles Hitt, president of XPO Logistics’
Swift Transportation
Initiates New Digital-
Oriented Campaign To
Reach New Drivers
The U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics
says the demand for truck drivers will double
over the next decade — from 1.44 million on
the road in 2014 to 2.76 million in 2022.
In light of this industry demand, Swift
Transportation Co. says it is initiating
“Swift’s Driving Force,” the company’s 2017
strategic creative campaign.
Aimed at highlighting Swift’s unique
culture, size and emphasis on people, the
campaign’s ultimate goal is to reach men and
women looking to join the next generation of
Swift drivers. Partnering with digital marketing
agency iCrossing for creative and digital
strategy and execution, Swift’s Driving Force
campaign aims to reach new drivers, as well
as celebrate the important role Swift drivers
play in the lives of Americans every day.
“Through conversations with our drivers
and others in the industry, we were able to
work alongside iCrossing to develop a campaign
that truly reaches key driver personas
and relays how Swift creates opportunities
for thousands of drivers and their families
across the country,” said Tom Hall, Swift’s
digital media strategist. “We hope this
campaign communicates Swift’s commitment
to drivers and reaches those that may
never have considered trucking, educating
them on a career opportunity that is critical to
America’s economy.”
The inspiration behind Swift’s Driving
Force is drivers, their families and the role
that Swift plays in communities across the
country, Hall said, adding that the campaign
encourages new and potential drivers to become
a part of a culture of growth, opportunity
and family-centered work with Swift.
By reaching a younger group of potential
drivers, Swift plans to increase its strong
driver base, and allow individuals to start
quickly building a career with a company that
is dedicated to the longevity of its employees,
he said. To reach drivers where they are,
Swift will employ various digital marketing
executions, including social media, display
ads, paid search, digital radio and industryspecific
channels.
“We live in a digital age, where people
of all ages, backgrounds and walks of life
are living their lives through online channels
and connected devices. Truck drivers are no
different,” said Lori B. Wilson, executive
creative director at iCrossing. “After doing
in-depth research into “what drives drivers,”
we are working with Swift to engage, educate
and connect individuals across the country
to the brand. We are deeply passionate about
celebrating the everyday heroes of American
life and fueling the growth machine at Swift.
We believe the integrated Swift’s Driving
Force platform will move the needle in
inspiring and attracting a new generation of
drivers.”
Kenworth Continues Advancements In
Low/Zero Emissions With T680 Drayage
Day Cabs
Kenworth continues its advancements
on low/zero emission projects focused on
Kenworth T680 day cabs for drayage tractor
operations in Southern California ports,
which are backed by $9 million in government
grants awarded last August.
Kenworth is
developing a
prototype Class
8 hydrogen
fuel cell tractor
designed to
provide true
zero-emissions
operation. By
Kenworth T680 Tractor with
Hydrogen Fuel Cell
using the fuel cell — provided by Ballard
Power Systems in Burnaby, British
Columbia — to recharge the batteries, the
only emission coming out of the tailpipe
will be water. The T680 day cab tractor uses
lithium-ion batteries to power a dual-rotor
electric motor, driving the rear tandem axle
through a 4-speed automated transmission.
Kenworth’s hydrogen truck is expected to be
ready for initial track and on-road testing in
the fourth quarter of this year.
Kenworth recently began building a second
prototype series hybrid-electric T680 day cab
designed to produce near-zero-emissions. The
truck will use the currently available Cummins
Westport ISL G Near Zero NOx engine
fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG) to
generate electrical power. Initial track and
road testing is expected to start in the fourth
quarter.
These two T680 tractors will be identical,
with the exception of their power generation
systems. Each truck will have an electriconly
range of approximately 30 miles,
and the on-board fuel — hydrogen or
natural gas — will provide sufficient
range for a full day in regional haul
applications. Kenworth’s work on these
programs is supported by grants of $2.1
million for
each project
from the U.S.
Department
of Energy
(DOE) Office
of Energy
Kenworth T680 Hybrid-Electric Tractor
with CNG
Efficiency
and Renewable
Energy (EERE), with Southern California’s
South Coast Air Quality Management
District (SCAQMD) as the prime applicant.
A third project received $4.8 million in
funding from the California Air Resources
Board (CARB), again with the SCAQMD
as the prime applicant. Kenworth will build
four additional, hybrid-electric T680 day
cabs equipped with the Cummins Westport
ISL G Near Zero NOx engine operating on
compressed natural gas, and will also support
customer field tests of these units in Southern
California drayage operations.
Kenworth will build its first unit for this
project in 2018. Kenworth engineers will be
able to make design and system refinements
to this 2018 unit based on data collected from
this year’s real-world testing of the initial,
2017 hybrid-electric T680.
All six prototype T680 day cab drayage
tractors, produced as a result of these Kenworth
programs, will transport freight from
the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to
warehouses and railyards in the Los Angeles
basin.
“These T680 day cab projects provide
an excellent opportunity for Kenworth to
develop and advance important technologies
that may play a critical role in the trucks of
tomorrow,” said Patrick Dean, Kenworth
chief engineer. “Within the next decade,
hybrid-electric powertrains are expected to
be required to satisfy emissions regulations
in several major U.S. metropolitan areas. For
example, California is considering regulations
that will require zero-emission levels for
port drayage trucks operating in specifically
designated areas. We look forward to playing
a leadership role to meet the opportunities and
challenges ahead.”
