fitche from the arms of Commercy. The French railway gun stands for the history<br />

of Headquarters Battery in France. The crest is taken from the coat of arms of<br />

the Coast <strong>Defense</strong>s of Sandy Hook where the 7th Coast <strong>Artillery</strong> was organized<br />

in 1924.<br />

The change of designations of the units of this regiment is as follows:<br />

Headquarters Battery: organized in 1898 as Battery H, 7th Regiment of<br />

<strong>Artillery</strong>; redesignated 78th Company, Coast <strong>Artillery</strong>, in 1901; became 2d Com.<br />

pany, Fort Moultrie, S. C., in 1916; Battery H, 8th Provisional Regiment, Coast<br />

<strong>Artillery</strong> Corps, in .1917; Battery H, S3d <strong>Artillery</strong>, Coast <strong>Artillery</strong> Corps, in<br />

February, 1918; and Battery E, 42d <strong>Artillery</strong>, Coast <strong>Artillery</strong> Corps, in July,<br />

1918; was given the additional number of 78th Company, Coast <strong>Artillery</strong> Corps,<br />

in 1922; and became Headquarters Battery, 7th Coast <strong>Artillery</strong>, in 1924.<br />

Battery A, 7th Coast <strong>Artillery</strong>, was organized in 1898 as Battery A, 7th<br />

Regiment of <strong>Artillery</strong>; designated the 72d Company, Coast <strong>Artillery</strong>, in 1901;<br />

became the 1st Company, Fort Screvens, Ga., in 1916, and 1st Company, Coast<br />

<strong>Defense</strong>s of Savannah, in 1917; was again designated the 72d Company, Coast<br />

<strong>Artillery</strong> Corps, in 1922; and became Battery A, 7th Coast <strong>Artillery</strong>, in 1924.<br />

Battery B, 7th Coast <strong>Artillery</strong>, was organized in 1898 as Battery B, 7th<br />

Regiment of <strong>Artillery</strong>; designated 73d Company,Coast <strong>Artillery</strong>, in 1901; changed<br />

to 6th Company, Fort Grant, C. Z., in 1916, and to 6th Company, Coast <strong>Defense</strong>s<br />

of Balboa, in 1917; was again designated the 73d Company, Coast <strong>Artillery</strong><br />

Corps, in 1922; and became Battery B, 7th Coast <strong>Artillery</strong>, in 1924.<br />

Battery C, 7th Coast <strong>Artillery</strong>, was organized in 1898 as Battery I, 7th Regi.<br />

ment of <strong>Artillery</strong>; designated 79th Company, Coast <strong>Artillery</strong>, in 1901; changed<br />

to 1st Company,Fort Michie, N. Y., in 1916,and to 23d Company, Coast <strong>Defense</strong>s<br />

of Long Island Sound, in 1917; became 18th Company-later 15th Company-<br />

Coast <strong>Defense</strong>s of Long Island Sound, in 1918; 6th Company, Coast <strong>Defense</strong>s of<br />

Long Island Sound, in 1919; again designated 79th Company, Coast <strong>Artillery</strong><br />

Corps, in 1922; and became Battery C, 7th Coast <strong>Artillery</strong>, in 1924.<br />

Battery D, 7th Coast <strong>Artillery</strong>, was organized in 1898 as Battery D, 7th<br />

Regiment of <strong>Artillery</strong>; designated 74th Company, Coast <strong>Artillery</strong>, in 1901; be.<br />

came the 4th Company, Fort Screvens, Ga., in 1916, and the 2d Company, Fort<br />

Screvens, Ga., in 1917; then Battery ~f, 8th Provisional Regiment, Coast <strong>Artillery</strong><br />

Corps; Battery M, 53d <strong>Artillery</strong>, Coast <strong>Artillery</strong> Corps, in February, 1918, and<br />

Battery F, 53d <strong>Artillery</strong>, Coast <strong>Artillery</strong> Corps in July, 1918; received the designation,<br />

74th Company, Coast <strong>Artillery</strong> Corps, in 1922; and became Battery D,<br />

7th Coast <strong>Artillery</strong>, in 1924.<br />

Battery E, 7th Coast <strong>Artillery</strong>, was organized in 1898 as Battery E, 7th Regiment<br />

of <strong>Artillery</strong>; designated 75th Company, Coast <strong>Artillery</strong>, in 1901; became the<br />

2d Company,Fort Kamehameha, H. T., in 1916,and 2d Company, Coast <strong>Defense</strong>s<br />

of Pearl Harbor, in 1921; was again designated as the 75th Company, Coast <strong>Artillery</strong><br />

Corps, in 1922; and became Battery E, 7th Coast <strong>Artillery</strong>, in 1924.<br />

Battery F, 7th Coast <strong>Artillery</strong>, was organized in 1898 as Battery F, 7th Regi.<br />

ment of <strong>Artillery</strong>; designated 76th Company, Coast <strong>Artillery</strong>, in 1901; became<br />

2d Company, Fort Hancock, N. J., in 1916, and 2d Company, Coast <strong>Defense</strong>s of<br />

Sandy Hook, in 1917; was again designated the 76th Company, Coast <strong>Artillery</strong><br />

Corps, in 1922; and Battery F,7th Coast <strong>Artillery</strong>, in 1924.<br />

Battery .G, 7th Coast <strong>Artillery</strong>, was organized in 1898 as Battery 1., 7th Regiment<br />

of <strong>Artillery</strong>; designated 81st Company, Coast <strong>Artillery</strong>, in 1901; became
