THE SWING GOLFING is beautiful in Hawaii with courses that come with magnificent scenery, lush tropical vegetation, dramatic cliff-top locations and spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. Most parts of Hawaii have only two seasons – summer from May to October, and winter from November to April. The temperature hovers between 29-32°C in the summer, and it gets gentler in winter with readings of 26-28°C. Even in winter months, rain and cloud cover are intermittent. Golfers should get ample tee time in the sun. With the best climate for golf and 110 courses to choose from, Hawaii is indeed a golfing paradise. Golfers will be spoilt for choice as it is home to challenging as well as friendly golf courses that won’t hurt the ego of a high-handicapper. Teeing off oceanfront greens into scenic fairways on courses carved out of sprawling volcanic black lava fields is without a doubt a golfing experience to cherish. We take a look at five of Hawaii’s most inviting and playable courses: Manele Golf Course in Lanai There is a lot of visual drama here with the course perched on top 60-metre cliffs, ensuring a panoramic view of the ocean on all 18 holes. The fairways are lined by black lava outcroppings. Beautiful colours come into play in this magnificent palette of golf as the red cliffs plunge to the blue of the sea as you stand in green fairways dotted with white sand traps, and surrounded by a myriad of shades and hues of the blossoms from fissures in the black lavarock. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, this 6,436m par-72 championship course can fool you into thinking that you can return a scorecard free from blemish. Beware as hazards are aplenty to punish wayward shots. In fact, it has one of the most unforgiving water hazards in the world at Hole No. 12. With the pacific waters surging below, golfers need to clear 180m of churning waves to avoid a bad score on this testing hole. More challenges await as there are other gaping ravines to swallow hooks and slices on this course. Fret not, since its five-tee concept — with courses of shorter yardage mapped in red, white, blue, gold and “Nicklaus” — allows golfers of all levels a fighting chance to emerge unscathed.
