La Boqueria Market
La Boqueria Market or Mercat de Sant Josep
de la Boqueria is one of the most famous food
markets in Europe. The market opens from
8am to 8.30pm on Mondays to Saturdays, luring
the crowds with stacks upon stacks of fresh
vegetables, fruits, meats, seafood, dried spices,
candies and a variety of other items for cooking
or for snacking on the spot. Years of renovations
and touch-ups to the overall structure of the
market allowed for the installation of more
vendors and farmers from all around Catalonia,
as well as a few unique tapas bars in more
recent times.
Pinotxo Bar is a highly sought-after breakfast
spot in the area, situated to the right of the market
entrance. Hungry visitors gather here even earlier
than 8am to savour a Spanish omelette, bratwurst
sausages or grilled green peppers (Pimpientos
del Padrón) with a frothy cup of cappuccino. El
Quim restaurant is further inside, famous for
its fried eggs with baby squid and homemade
croquettes. Bar Central, located just past the fish
section, is another great spot to rest while enjoying
a meal of grilled fish and paella among a spread of
treats displayed on the counter under the warm,
inviting lights.
