BEEF CATTLE DEPARTMENT POLICIES<br />
1. All health regulations apply. Papers will be checked at weigh-in.<br />
See exhibition rules.<br />
2. Market animals are to be in the member’s possession by the winter<br />
weigh in date..<br />
3. All animals are to be tied with neck straps and halter.<br />
4. Market animals will be shown by weight.<br />
5. Exhibitors may show two animals in each class.<br />
6. Identification rules apply to crossbred, breed, market heifer, and<br />
dairy steer classes. Animals are to be weighed and ear tagged with<br />
a county-issued tag at the county ID clinic held in the winter.<br />
7. Beef animals will be weighed only one time.<br />
8. Any Market Animal that does not meet the minimum weight (850<br />
lbs.) will be eligible to show in separate class. Animals showing in<br />
this class will NOT be eligible for awards and animals showing in<br />
this class will not be eligible to sell. This will give the exhibitor an<br />
opportunity to complete their project.<br />
9. An exhibitor may weigh in a maximum of 5 animals in each group<br />
(crossbred, breed, market heifers, and dairy steers) and show 2 (in<br />
each group) in the Junior Fair.<br />
10. Market animals must be born after Jan. 1, 2015. Any questionable<br />
animal will be mouthed.<br />
11. Horns will not be allowed on market or feeder cattle.<br />
12. Animals and pens are to be clean at all times.<br />
13. Animals must be in the owner’s possession by: Market animals - by<br />
the nose printing date Feeder calves and junior heifer calf- July 1,<br />
2016. All other females - May 1, 2016.<br />
14. A $5.00 premium will be awarded for each exhibited feeder calf<br />
and heifer. The premium for market beef will be deposited into the<br />
diverted premium account.<br />
15. Family Market Animal - Families with more than (1) exhibitor will<br />
have the choice of purchasing one or more market beef animals<br />
and entering them under the family name rather than the name of<br />
an exhibitor from that family.<br />

In the event one of the market animals that the exhibitor has checked<br />
in at the weigh in dies or for some reason the exhibitor does not want<br />
to bring them to the fair, or the exhibitor wants to show this as a 2nd<br />
Market Beef Animal, the “Family Market Animal” can be placed in the<br />
exhibitors name and shown at the <strong>Mercer</strong> <strong>County</strong> Fair.<br />
The following rules will apply:<br />
All “Family Market Beef Animals” must be brought to the identification/<br />
weigh in. The exhibitor will be listed as “____________ Family”.<br />
A separate Project Entry Form for this animal must be filled out with the<br />
Exhibitor listed as “____________Family”.<br />
All families entering a “Family Market Beef Animals” must advise the<br />
Beef Advisor as soon as possible, but no later than (1) hour after the<br />
deadline for the cattle to be in the barn at the <strong>Mercer</strong> <strong>County</strong> Fair, of the<br />
intentions for this animal. If it is going to be shown at the <strong>Mercer</strong> <strong>County</strong><br />
Fair, the animal needs to be put in an exhibitors name. A completed<br />
Drug Use Notification Form must be filled out in the exhibitors name<br />
and presented at the weigh in at the Fair.<br />
Eligible exhibitor must be an immediate member of the “____________<br />
Family” and must have checked in an animal at the identification/weigh<br />
in. Animals already checked in under an exhibitor cannot be switched.<br />
All Junior Fair rules apply for the exhibitor and animals.<br />
Family Market Animals are NOT eligible to show at the Ohio State Fair.<br />
16. DRESS CODE RULES APPLY. SEE GENERAL LIVESTOCK RULES.<br />
17. ALL beef cattle can NOT to be shown by any other exhibitor in any<br />
other county junior fair show.<br />
18. Anything that is in question, will be decided upon<br />
by the Beef Committee.<br />
DAIRY STEER<br />
1. Animals are to be finished dairy steers No beef or crossbred (dairy/<br />
beef) animals are to be shown.<br />
2. Animals should be representative of dairy breeding .<br />
3. All health regulations apply. See health rules.<br />
FEEDER CALF<br />
1. See health rules. Regulations apply.<br />
2. Feeder calf is to be born after January 1 current year.<br />
In the exhibitor’s possession by July 1 current year.<br />
3. Weight of animal must be 700 pounds or less.<br />
4. Animal may be beef, crossbred or dairy.<br />
5. Calf must be castrated.<br />
6. Heifers are allowed in this class, but cannot be shown in both the<br />
feeder calf show and the heifer show.<br />
7. All feeder calves must have a farm ear tag in their ear.<br />
This tag number is to be recorded in the member’s<br />
record book and stated on the member’s beef entry form.<br />
MARKET HEIFER<br />
1. A Market Heifer is a beef heifer sired by a beef bull. (NO Dairy<br />
characteristics.)<br />
2. The heifer must be intended for market (slaughter) purposes only,<br />
and not for breeding purposes.<br />
3. Must be born after 1/1/15, and in exhibitor’s possession by the day<br />
of the weigh in.<br />
4. The Market Heifers will show in a separate class along with the<br />
market steers. The champion Market Heifer will compete against<br />
the Crossbred, Breed, and Dairy Steers for the Grand and Reserve<br />
Market Beef Animal. (No separate Born & Raised Market Heifer<br />
Class)<br />
5. There will be a trophy awarded only if there is a minimum of four<br />
market heifers entered at weigh-in.<br />
CROSSBRED STEER<br />
1. All steers not eligible to show as a breed steer, a dairy steer or in<br />
All Other Breeds – will be shown as crossbreds.<br />
2. Any steer displaying strong dairy characteristics will be shown as a<br />
dairy steer.<br />
BREED STEER<br />
1. To qualify as Breed Beef Steer, the animal must be registered with a<br />
Beef Breed Association.<br />
2. The original copy of the registration paper for the animal must be<br />
brought to the weigh-in in August.<br />
A ) The animal must be registered in the exhibitor name or the name<br />
of the immediate family.<br />
B) At the weigh-in/tagging in December, if the animal is registered<br />
in the exhibitor’s name, the animal must be entered and showed by<br />
that exhibitor only and is not eligible for the family market animal or<br />
can be entered as the family market animal project.
