Jess’ Summer Holiday Fun
Jess Taylor, another of our successful graduates from the Women in Business course, used the
skills she gained from the programme to help her set up her own business. Glitter Star Kids is
a company which organises kids’ parties with events like face painting, cupcake making and
singalongs. Having successfully pitched at one of our recent Community Soup events, Jess has
now received funding to expand her business in new and exciting ways (see page 6 to find out more).
We asked Jess to share some of her ideas for keeping the children entertained over the holidays
without spending a fortune.
Make a piñata
Always popular at birthday parties,
the traditional piñata can take on
many different forms from donkeys
to balloons (depending on how
creative you are feeling). Have a go at
making your own by following these
simple steps.
What you’ll need
Newspaper, PVA glue, a balloon,
paints, and some sweets.
Blow up the balloon and place
in a large bowl to keep it steady.
Cut newspaper into long,
skinny triangles.
Pour PVA glue into a small bowl
and mix 50/50 with water.
Dip newspaper strips into glue
mixture and papier-mâché
3 layers of newspaper onto
the balloon.
leave a hole at the top big
enough to fit sweets through.
When the papier-mâché is
completely dry, puncture and
slowly deflate the balloon.
Paint sections of balloon in a fun
design of your choice.
When dried, fill with sweets.
Hang the filled balloon from a
tree using string and use a stick
to hit it until it breaks!
Get baking
A brilliant way to get your little ones
engaged in the food they eat is
to bake with them in the kitchen.
Summer is the perfect time of year to
use traditional English strawberries
and there are plenty of recipes
online for strawberry and whipped
cream cupcakes!
Hunt for treasure
You can keep the kids busy for hours
searching around the house for the
sweets from the piñata. A great way
to make a simple treasure hunt a bit
more fun is to decorate an egg box to
create a real life treasure chest filled
with small sweets. Make up a series of
clues if you’re feeling creative.
Summer holiday
X-Factor
Hold a talent show in your very
own front room and let the kids get
together to show off their hidden
talent with music, singing, dancing
and anything else that makes them
unique. If you want to set up a cheap
karaoke session in your home, then
there are loads of videos on YouTube
which provide the backing track for
your favourite songs.
