The Wild Side of Life
As I write this, I’m two days past
the most rancorous election in
recent memory and 14 days from
Thanksgiving. For the record,
Abraham Lincoln officially declared
Thanksgiving as a national holiday
in 1863, at the height of the Civil
War. In his holiday proclamation,
which designated the final Thursday
in November as Thanksgiving, he
entreated all Americans to ask God
to, among other things, “heal the
wounds of the nation.”
Today, our nation may be divided,
but not nearly to the extent it was then—and our forebears overcame those
wounds, both literal and figurative. They were able to recover and continue
to forge the greatest nation in the world, because in America they were
given the choice to do so.
I’m thankful we live in a country where we can choose. We can choose a
president or we can choose not to vote. We can choose to worship or not
believe in a thing. We can choose to voice our opinions or we can choose to
remain silent. We can choose to be part of the solution or we can choose to
be an obstacle.
We, like our pioneering ancestors, can also choose to invest our money,
our time and our talents in land. Here, land is not the rarified possession of
an aristocracy, but the foundation of families. It offers the opportunity to be
an individual decision-maker who manages the assets of natural resources
for the benefit of society at large. Land ownership is our right as well as our
privilege and honor. We are indebted to generations of land stewards who
have been determined to pass the land forward better than they found it.
When Lisa and I gather our three children and extended family around the
table during the holiday season, we will celebrate the bounty of this country
and the blessing of choice. As for
me and mine, we will choose peace,
hope and joy—and I hope that you
and yours will join us.
