Did you experience the Eclipse? I didn’t have glasses but 

had experienced an Eclipse years ago in the late ‘70’s. 

Though it probably wasn’t a total eclipse, I do remember

nine 3-by-3 square blocks, with some of the 

squares filled in for you. The object is to fill in 

the blank squares in such a way that each

The Eclipse and Albert Einstein 

What did the eclipse have to do with Albert Einstein? 

May 29, 1919 

Well it wasn’t the 2017 

eclipse, it was the 1919 eclipse 

98 years ago. In his 1915 general 

theory of relativity, Albert 

Einstein predicted that the sun’s 

gravity should distort spacetime 

in its vicinity. Stars behind the 

sun would appear in different 

positions with respect to each 

other during an eclipse, than 

they would on an ordinary night 

when the sun is nowhere in 

sight. 

This theory, as opposed to 

Newton’s static space theory, 

brought much debate among 

the scientific world. An eclipse 

would allow the scientist to see 

the stars and from a picture, see

results of the stars behind the 

sun in different positions than 

normal, which would prove the 

theory. 

Astronomer Arthur Eddington 

set up two expeditions to photograph 

an eclipse, but due to 

World War I, he was delayed. 

After the war, Eddington travelled 

to the island of Príncipe 

off the west coast of Africa to 

watch the solar eclipse of May 

29th, 1919. 

Due to his photo, Einstein’s 

theory was confirmed and he 

became known to the general 

public, where before only scientist 

were aware of him and 

his theory. The theory has been 

confirmed several times since.

The Best Fried Green Tomatoes 

Ingredients 

4 large green tomatoes 

2 eggs 

1/2 cup milk 

1 cup all-purpose flour 

1/2 cup cornmeal 

1/2 cup bread crumbs 

2 teaspoons coarse kosher 

salt 

1/4 teaspoon ground black 

pepper 

1 quart vegetable oil for 

frying 

Instructions 

Prep 5m, Cook 15m, Ready 20m 

Makes 4 Servings, 510 Calories 

Slice tomatoes 1/2 inch thick. Discard the ends. 

Whisk eggs and milk together in a medium-size bowl. Scoop flour onto a plate. Mix 

cornmeal, bread crumbs and salt and pepper on another plate. Dip tomatoes into flour to 

coat. Then dip the tomatoes into milk and egg mixture. Dredge in breadcrumbs to completely 

coat. 

In a large skillet, pour vegetable oil (enough so that there is 1/2 inch of oil in the pan) and 

heat over a medium heat. Place tomatoes into the frying pan in batches of 4 or 5, depending 

on the size of your skillet. Do not crowd the tomatoes, they should not touch each 

other. When the tomatoes are browned, flip and fry them on the other side. Drain them on 

paper towels.
