Howard's insight
Last week PM Turnbull indicated that
he would say Yes in the upcoming
referendum on same sex marriage; yet ex-PM
John Howard considered it not just a matter
between two individuals as it would widely
affect parental right as well as freedom of
religion and speech thus he would say No
to it.
Howard had a remarkable political life with
10 years as Australian prime minister; he
was powerful in speech and in governance
which enabled long term national
development. His defeat in his last election
did not lose his respect from others. In this
controversial issue of same sex marriage,
he advocated the need to consider the right
and freedom of communities apart from that
demanding for a right of same sex marriage.
The society should seriously take on his
conclusion to oppose the legislation.
In a society driven by individualism, people
could easily lose sight of the impact on the
mainstream society as it seems that this
single community is not affecting the others.
If we feel the legislation is just to let such
marginalised community earn their right, the
majority could just choose to be quiet and
let go. But as Howard rightly pointed out, the
legislation process is going to take away the
right of many others.
Howard considered a family with a
father and a mother can provide a good
environment for a child to grow up; this may
not be the main point as in the absence of
same sex marriage there is no guarantee
all families have good marriage. But the
legalisation of same sex marriage validates a
family may not need a father and a mother,
and the next generation will not have the
right to have them both. This is the problem.
Same sex partners of course could
acquire and love their children but invariably
the kids are born without the right of having
parents. Is our society really ready to take on
this change? This is a question to answer for
those who want to say Yes
