Once remote and difficult to visit, Iceland has emerged as a top
travel destination due to its breathtaking landscapes and geologic
formations, myriad bird life, and friendly hospitality. This unique
cruise, which circumnavigates the island, offers an exceptional
opportunity to experience Iceland unlike most visitors. You’ll go off
the beaten path to places of immense beauty and interest by boat, as
the Vikings did when they first arrived.
Highlights Include
Reykjavik: Learn about Iceland’s heritage at the National Museum,
where nearly 3,000 objects trace its history from an early Viking settlement.
Plus, a city tour showcases the capital’s lively, cosmopolitan
ambiance.
West Fjords: This peninsula is one of Iceland’s most dramatically
beautiful areas, yet one of its least visited due to its remote location.
Take in breathtaking landscapes, including the mountainous fjord of
Djup, and tour Ísafjördur’s Maritime Museum, which illustrates the
climatic and geographic challenges faced by residents.
Northern Wonders: In Siglufjördur, visit museums devoted to the
herring industry (one of the country’s most important industries) and
to the country’s musical heritage, then enjoy time in Akureyri and
explore the extensive botanical gardens. Spend a day near cerulean
Lake Myvatn, where volcanic activity—both past and current—
is seen in a steaming geothermal field, unique craters, and surreal lava
formations, while another highlight is legendary Godafoss, “waterfall
of the gods.” You’ll also cross the Arctic Circle on an afternoon cruise
to Grimsey Island, a birdwatcher’s paradise.
Stunning East Coast Glacier: Enjoy a full-day excursion to
the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, where a small private boat offers an
up-close view of dramatic icebergs as well as the scenic backdrop of
Vatnajokull, Europe’s largest glacier.
Southern Islands: At Heimaey Island witness one of Iceland’s largest
puffin colonies nesting amid tall cliffs and see “Fire Mountain” or
Mount Eldfell with its still-warm lava fields. Cruise past Surtsey Island
to view this fragile, young island, designated a World Heritage site.
