May 8–18, 2018
Experience the timeless splendors of Japan in the spring as you
cruise the full length of the tranquil Inland Sea of Japan and along the
coast to Matsue. Our voyage also features a stop in the port of Ulsan,
South Korea, for a special visit to historic Gyeongju, the “museum
without walls.”
Highlights Include
Kyoto: Discover an ethereal setting of grand imperial castles, serene
Zen gardens, and graceful Shinto shrines, which reflect Japanese
culture in its purest form. Highlights include Nijo Castle and the
temples of Kinkaku-ji and Ryoan-ji, all World Heritage sites.
Himeji: From the hilltop grounds, admire the impressive Himeji
Castle Complex, the finest surviving example of medieval Japanese
architecture from the Shogun period and a World Heritage site.
Hiroshima and Miyajima: Witness the compelling Peace Memorial
Park, a tranquil space filled with memorials honoring those who
lost their lives at the end of World War II. In Miyajima, tour the
impressive 6th-century Itsukushima Shrine and its stunning Torii gate,
both of which appear to float on water.
Hagi: Visit the old samurai quarter, the evocative 17th-century Toko-ji
Temple of Japanese Zen Buddhism, and the Hagi Uragami Museum.
Matsue: Travel through Matsue, the “City of Water,” to the Adachi
Museum of Art, featuring a collection of Japanese modern art and
perfectly landscaped gardens.
Gyeongju, South Korea: Explore the cradle of the 8th-century
Shilla Kingdom, a World Heritage site, and see the glorious Bulguksa
Temple, Royal Burial Mounds, and the Gyeongju National Museum.
Moji: Stop at the beautiful Akama Shrine as well as the Karato Ichiba
Fish Market during a tour of this port city.
Uno: Discover the picturesque town of Kurashiki, known for its
willow-lined canals and 17th-century mercantile buildings (with
distinctive black-and-white designs) or choose to visit beautiful
Korakuen Garden, one of Japan’s most famous gardens.
