media tour, as well as
safety awareness
campaign in Cofimvaba
at the Eskom customer
network centre on

Safety, hygiene,
environmental and
quality officer Rolly
McIntyre said the main
objective of the
campaign was to
educate people about
the dangers of
electricity and the need
to inform the company
of illegal connections.
“The main places that
we want to focus on are
the rural areas and
schools. We have been
in discussions with the
department of
education to int roduce
the dangers of
electricity in the
curriculum.”
Eskom was looking
to install telephones,
particularly in rural
areas, to allow for the
reporting of
emergencies and illegal
connections.
“We want to partner
with other stakeholders,
South African Police
Services, Emergency
Medical Services and
local municipalities.”
Intsika Yethu council
speaker Khanyisa
Mndleleni said the
municipality was based
in rural surroundings
where it was difficult
for people to be
connected.
“We are working well
with Eskom by
informing them about
where illegal
connections happen.
We also submit some
information about
people who are in need
of electrification. The
death rate is high when
it comes to people
being killed by wires
connected illegally.”
Senior manager of
the Eastern Cape
operating unit Unathi
Figlan said funds were
allocated from the
energy department with
villages identified as
beneficiaries.
“It is frustrating for
some community
members to see other
villages getting
electricity while they do
not have.
“We do not have a
choice as the money
that we are allocated
for that specific year,
will be for that certain
village.”
Figlan said the
Eastern Cape and
KwaZulu-Natal were the
only two provinces in
the country that had
high death rates of
people being killed by
electricity mainly due
to a lack of awareness.
A resident of Joe
Slovo, Nicholas Gambu,
said Eskom should
return and look at flood
lights that were not
working in the area as
this was resulting in an
increase in crime.
