Bonkolo marathon?<br />
IF you have been thinking about entering the<br />
Twizza Bonkolo marathon on November 4 this<br />
year but have yet to take action – beware as<br />
time is running out.<br />
<strong>The</strong> entries for the full (42km) and half<br />
(21km) marathon events of this popular run<br />
close at midday on Friday, <strong>October</strong> 27. Late<br />
entries will have to be accommodated by a<br />
late entry fee of R30.<br />
A limited number of T-shirts are being<br />
handed out to the first <strong>20</strong>0 entries in the<br />
marathon and first 400 for the half marathon<br />
so you need to enter as a matter of urgency!<br />
<strong>The</strong>o Ferreira of the Queenstown Harriers<br />
said both the 21km and 42km routes had been<br />
calibrated and certified and could thus be<br />
used for a South African or World<br />
Championship event. <strong>The</strong> routes are slightly<br />
different this year so runners can look forward<br />
to some changes.<br />
<strong>The</strong> races start at 5.30am at the Bonkolo<br />
Dam outside Komani with the organisers<br />
hoping that this year’s numbers will exceed<br />
last year’s 700 entries.<br />

champion. This was Purdon’s rookie year in the<br />

THE Queenstown Boys Boxing<br />
Club (QBBC) hosted their 10th<br />
tournament this year and<br />
celebrated its 83rd year of<br />
e x i st e n c e .<br />
QBBC ended off the year in<br />
fine form, with 84 boxers<br />
competing in 42 bouts including<br />
14 female boxers.<br />

Mabuti Mapeyi said he was<br />
happy with the turnout for the<br />
tournament.<br />
“We had many clubs taking<br />
part, some came as far as<br />

Tambo and Ilinge.”<br />
“This was one of our most<br />
successful tournaments this<br />
year. We would like to thank<br />
Spargs SUPERSPAR for<br />
sponsoring us throughout – we<br />

tournaments a success,” Mapeyi<br />

CACADU team, Cumakala Ladies Football Club,<br />
played an away game against Ntabankulu team,<br />
Executive Ladies Football Club, during the Provincial<br />
Sasol Women’s League on Saturday.<br />
Cumakala Ladies, which were second on the log,<br />
suffered a 3-1 defeat against Executive Ladies.<br />
Cumakala coach, Wezo Ndiki, said careless<br />
mistakes by the backline players cost them the game.<br />
“We have not been playing for the past four weeks.<br />
<strong>The</strong> players were ill prepared for the game and their<br />
fitness levels were not up to standard.”<br />

Stander recently signed a new<br />
contract with Western Province, which<br />
sees him change alliance from the<br />
Blue Bulls.<br />

<strong>The</strong> talented flyhalf made his Currie<br />
Cup debut for the Bulls in <strong>20</strong>14, a year<br />
after matriculating from Queen’s<br />
College.<br />
At 23, the Cradock-born pivot has<br />
been through the ranks and formed a<br />
formidable halfback combination with<br />
scrumhalf JP Smith at the Bulls.<br />
Stander represented Border before<br />
moving up north to Pretoria, playing<br />
for the FNB UP-Tuks side in the Varsity<br />
Cup. He was part of the squad that<br />
lifted the trophy earlier this year.<br />
He has represented the Bulls at<br />
under-19, U21, Vodacom Cup, Currie<br />
Cup Qualifiers, SuperSport Rugby<br />

comprising up to 60 riders.<br />
Kilian on her horse Armani, achieved<br />
the results: 1st Two phase Jumping, 5th<br />
Competition Jumping, 2nd Working<br />
riding, 3rd Prelim Dressage, 9th<br />
Performance Riding and 12th In Hand<br />
<strong>The</strong> next game would be on <strong>October</strong> 28 with the<br />
provincial play-offs scheduled for November 11.<br />
Illinge team, Golden City Football Club, travelled to<br />
Mount Frere to face Red Roses Ladies Football Club.<br />
City took a major beating, losing 14-0 to Roses.<br />
City, firmly placed at the bottom of the log, have<br />
yet to win a game this season.<br />
At the end of the Provincial Sasol Women’s League,<br />
the four best teams from the Inland Stream will take<br />
on the top four Coastal Stream teams in the play offs.<br />
<strong>The</strong> winner in the play offs will represent the Eastern<br />
Cape in the National Sasol League Championships.<br />

HOERSKOOL Hangklip hosted a 5km<br />
Cartoon fun run on Friday as a<br />
fundraising project for the school’s<br />
Interact Club.<br />
<strong>The</strong> funds are to be used for the<br />
Interact Christmas project.<br />
Teacher in charge of the Interact<br />
Club, Antoinette van Greunen, said<br />
funds would be used mainly to buy<br />
food for two Hospices which the club<br />
suppor ted.<br />
“<strong>The</strong> race also afforded pupils the<br />
chance to relax as they prepare for<br />
their final exams. It is the first time that<br />
we are doing the race and we are<br />
hoping that it will become an annual<br />
event.”<br />
She thanked the traffic department<br />

Balmoral was ranked 5th in the<br />
primary school division in South Africa,<br />
an achievement as this comprised<br />
adding up the points of only a<br />

for the donation of cooldrinks to sell.<br />
Hangklip pupil Marli Bakkes was the<br />
winner of the inaugural race and said<br />
she regularly trains for road running.<br />
“Last year I ran the 21km Bonkolo<br />
marathon. I love running and it helps<br />
me to relax. I started running in high<br />
school and I hope to make a provincial<br />
team.”<br />
Fellow pupil Isiphosethu<br />
Makongwana, who is also a member of<br />
the Interact Club, said it would be great<br />
to see the entire Komani community<br />
participating in the race.<br />
“It was a good way to get out and<br />
relax. We needed this break to unwind<br />
and have fun before going back to the<br />
books.”<br />
He will also add stability, physique<br />
and a different dimension to the<br />
Western Province backline. Ironically,<br />
his scrumhalf partner JP Smith have<br />
also changed alliance and moved to<br />
the Free State Cheetahs.<br />
Stander said this week, ”<strong>The</strong><br />
change of scenery will be good for my<br />
career and rugby – I can only improve<br />
as a player and person. I have set<br />
high standards for myself and my<br />
aspirations is to play Super Rugby and<br />
ultimately play for the Springboks.”<br />
He said he was willing to fight for<br />
the No10 jersey at WP.<br />
“Nothing comes easy in life and at<br />
times one must make sacrifices and<br />
take the necessary steps to succeed.”<br />
He was thankful to his father,<br />
Trevor, and his agent for making sure<br />
the deal with Western Province was<br />
sealed.<br />
“I am grateful to my parents and<br />
family for their undying support. I<br />
want to encourage all aspiring rugby<br />
players of Queen’s College and<br />
Komani to never stop believing in<br />
their dreams. Dream big and keep<br />
working hard.”
