NEWS November
2017
PRESIDENT’S CORNER
With Thanksgiving on its way, I thought I would start a list of the things I am particularly
thankful for in my world of horses. The list won’t be at all complete but perhaps it will inspire
us all to remember that there are so many things both tiny and huge that we might take for
granted in our equine community.
I am thankful for:

An amazing farrier who I trust way beyond the limits of my own knowledge.
An incredible team of veterinarians in our community who work well together to our benefit.
An amazing assortment of competent equine photographers and videographers. A few fabulous sources of
news, newsletters and blogs that are pertinent to us locally.
A dedicated group of trainers and peers to share education and knowledge with.
The body workers, massage therapists, chiropractors and acupuncturists who keep both animals and
humans functioning.
A knowledgeable contractor to keep my arena crowned and surface correct for the horses.
Fence contractors.
Saddle fitters.
The personal relationship with our tack shops and feed stores.
A community of volunteers that allow us to hold equine events.
A community of people who offer aid and rescue to animals in need.
An unbelievable group of clients, peers and friends who define my business.
My husband who has supported every single step of my business and passion. The many horses who
have all offered me a chance to be better in every way possible.
The opportunity to live my life following my dreams.
Hope you can all add items to your own list. It is humbling and fulfilling at the same time –
Jodi Lees, FRC Board President

This is an article written by FRC member, Hannah Nagle, who was granted an FRC scholarship towards her 2017
Regional Championships. As it turned out, Hannah and her mare, Lenox, won the 2017 Region 1 JR/YR Third Level
Championships! We commend her for her hard work and that it has paid off in such a magnificent way!

DID YOU KNOW……….
FRC IS PROUD TO BE ABLE TO AWARD FOUR
SCHOLARSHIPS TO RIDERS ANNUALLY?
In order to qualify for an FRC Rider Scholarship, you must be a current FRC member at
the time of your application. Additionally, your request must be for a rare educational
opportunity or clinic or a championship competition directly related to your riding
discipline. In exchange, scholarship recipients must give back to the club in some
tangible way. For further information on FRC Rider Scholarship eligibility, go to our
website: www.foothillsridingclub.org
CALLING HUNTER PACE AND TRAIL RIDING ENTHUSIASTS!
FRC is hosting a Hunter Pace as part of the Western Carolina Hunter Pace series and we need YOU to
help with some trail clearing! The pace will be held at Sara and Gerry Zordan’s Circle Z farm, formally
known as Fox’s Lair farm. These trails haven’t been publicly open in over 10 years and we’re excited
that the Zordan’s are opening their new farm to us! The trails are cleared but we need some hands at
cutting and removing low-hanging branches to clear them up enough by February. (Visit
www.wchpace.org for more info on the series.)
Contact Jillian at jillian.j.woolridge@gmail.com if you would be willing to do a half or full day of trail
cleaning in November or December to help our first hunter pace be a success! We will need volunteers
closer to the February date as well, so stay tuned!!!

Spotlight On Our Members
For November, our Spotlight shines on Hunter Tinsley. Hunter is a student of
local trainer and instructor Cathy Schwartz.
Let's hear from Hunter about his life with horses and why he belongs to Foothills
Riding Club...
I live in Greenville, SC where I was born and raised.
Currently I am a junior at Clemson University in South Carolina studying
Business Management. I am not sure of my plans after graduation yet, but I do
know that I would eventually like to end up in the equine industry in some
capacity - just not quite sure where my "fit" is yet.
I was born with a passion for
horses. I have always loved them. I
am the only person in my family
that rides. My parents tried their
best to get me to branch out and
play other sports as a kid: soccer,
baseball, and basketball. I always
ended up galloping up and down
the field so my parents finally
caved, signed me up for riding
lessons and the rest is history.
I currently do not own a horse. I
ride with Cathy Schwartz, so I have
a very unique opportunity to ride
several different horses, which has
really helped my riding career. I do
my best to ride at least once or twice a week when I can fit it into my school
schedule.

My favorite horse is one that I am currently riding. He is owned by Cathy
Schwartz. His name is Banjo, he is a PercheronxPaint cross. He is my heart
horse; I can’t help but smile when I am around him. He has big puppy dog
personality and big draft horse lips that gobble up your hands when you’re giving
him treats! He has a great personality and picks up things very quickly under
saddle. He is really just an all-around great horse and I love having him around.
We have done a few starter events this year as well as most of the FRC
dressage shows.
Right now, most of my time is spent doing schoolwork. When I get free time, I
enjoy taking my dogs, Happy and Piper for a walk (they love Falls Park in
downtown Greenville), hiking (I love our local state parks: Table Rock, Jones
Gap and Paris Mountain are my favorites), cooking, and spending time with my
family.
I have been an FRC member since 2015. I joined the FRC organization because
of how well the schooling shows are run. It is awesome having such a well-run
organization in our backyard. It is also a really great opportunity getting to
practice different dressage tests, jump rounds and getting green horses out to
different venues to school (and getting to practice managing my own show
nerves).
As I stated above I love how well run the shows are. But, I also really enjoy
everyone who attends the shows. Everyone I have met at FRC events has
always been really helpful and encouraging.

Hello fabulous FRC community!
Annual Meeting Press Release
November 15, 2017
2017 has been a fantastic year and we are looking forward to rounding it out with our Annual
Meeting on November 15 th at the Depot in Landrum.
Bring your fellow FRC members and your appetite because this is bound to be quite a night!
Starting at 6:00 our FRC hospitality committee will be catering entrees from Sidestreet and
providing beer and wine. We ask that everyone bring a dish to share. Last names A - K bring
an appetizer and L - Z bring a sweet treat.
After everyone fills their plate, we will get down to business. Our President, Jodi Lees, will
report on 2017 in review and share news for our future. We’ll vote on new board members and
our yearly charitable contributions.
The evening will be rounded out by a presentation by HERD (Helping Equines Regain
Dignity). This is a group of people who have come together to make a real difference in the
lives of over 200 horses. They are working to create a new standard in the horse community
and are doing it all right here in our own nook of horse country. “Saving one horse at a time” is
the motto of this rescue group that saves equines from dire conditions and in many cases
slaughter. HERD volunteers have rescued, vetted, fed, trained, and given these equines a
second chance at life. Members of their group will share how it all got started, how they
function now and what they envision for the future.
Come one! Come all! Help us round out the year in style!

October Seminar
On October 18th, FRC members gathered at the Landrum Depot for a night of
insightful information. From 6:30 to 7:00, the group gathered to enjoy the
scrumptious spread of finger foods and beverages provided by our FRC
Hospitality Committee. Community and conversation abounded as people shared
news, made plans, and chatted about the upcoming topic of the evening.
At 7:00, the reins were handed to our
guest presenter for the evening, Martha
Kemmer. Martha presented information
from a research paper that she wrote as
part of her certification coursework in
Massage and Muscle Therapy. The
information that she shared regarding
the role of massage/muscle therapy in
the rehabilitating horse was fantastic.
She started by sharing what injuries are
suitable for this type of work, as well as
those that could be negatively affected.
She provided information from specific
case studies to illustrate each of her
examples, making them realistic and
relatable. She ended her discussion by
answering audience questions, many of
which related to massage therapy as a
maintenance practice for all levels of
horses. Martha is a wealth of
information and we were so glad that
she was able to share her knowledge
with our members. Thanks to all who
came out to soak it all up!
Patti Lovelace won a 2018 FRC membership and Linda Dickinson was the lucky
winner of our member’s raffle, a free massage, which Martha generously
donated.
