Despite his sensitivity, Xerxes does not reta<strong>in</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r Darius’ careful use of tolerance<br />

as a political tool. Hav<strong>in</strong>g occupied A<strong>the</strong>ns <strong>and</strong> killed <strong>the</strong> last defenders of <strong>the</strong> city on <strong>the</strong><br />

acropolis, <strong>the</strong> Persians plunder <strong>and</strong> burn <strong>the</strong> entire prec<strong>in</strong>ct. <strong>The</strong> psychological effect is such that<br />

upon hear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> news, some A<strong>the</strong>nian comm<strong>and</strong>ers on Salamis are eager to return to A<strong>the</strong>ns to<br />

defend <strong>the</strong> city (8.53-56). If <strong>the</strong> Persians had a chance at forc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> A<strong>the</strong>nians to treat with<br />

<strong>the</strong>m, it was destroyed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fires on <strong>the</strong> acropolis.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> ve<strong>in</strong> of his predecessors Cam<strong>by</strong>ses <strong>and</strong> Darius, Xerxes seems not to value <strong>the</strong> truth<br />

as useful. Although he accepts advice from his advisors when he is <strong>in</strong>decisive, as when<br />

Artabanus <strong>in</strong>itially conv<strong>in</strong>ces him not to <strong>in</strong>vade Greece, it is apparent that, once he makes his<br />

m<strong>in</strong>d up about someth<strong>in</strong>g, he will not be swayed <strong>by</strong> honest words. In Book Seven, as Xerxes<br />

reviews his troops <strong>and</strong> ships, he approaches Demaratus, <strong>the</strong> former co-k<strong>in</strong>g of Sparta <strong>and</strong> asks <strong>in</strong><br />

a seem<strong>in</strong>g moment of doubt if <strong>the</strong> Greeks will resist his gr<strong>and</strong> army. Demaratus responds,<br />

“Would you like a truthful answer, my lord, or a comfort<strong>in</strong>g one?” <strong>and</strong> Xerxes accedes to <strong>the</strong><br />

former. His answer <strong>in</strong>deed offers no comfort; Demaratus tells him “<strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>d of truth that you will<br />

not be able to prove false at a later date” that “If <strong>the</strong>re are <strong>in</strong> fact only a thous<strong>and</strong> men to march<br />

out aga<strong>in</strong>st you…<strong>the</strong>n a thous<strong>and</strong> men will fight you.” Although he should have been gulp<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

Xerxes laughs this off <strong>and</strong> tells him that <strong>the</strong> Greeks’ freedom <strong>in</strong>hibits <strong>the</strong>m from fight<strong>in</strong>g well,<br />

whereas <strong>the</strong> Persian whip would drive <strong>the</strong>m to excel. Xerxes dismisses <strong>the</strong> former k<strong>in</strong>g: “But<br />

you’re just talk<strong>in</strong>g rubbish from a position of ignorance” (7.102-104).<br />

Cam<strong>by</strong>ses’ contempt for <strong>the</strong> Persian nomos of truth-tell<strong>in</strong>g results <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> crazed murder of<br />

his w<strong>in</strong>e-server (3.34); Darius has his co-conspirator <strong>and</strong> his family executed after he protests <strong>the</strong><br />

k<strong>in</strong>g’s secrecy <strong>and</strong> sets a def<strong>in</strong>itive precedent for royal prerogative over Persian traditions.<br />

However, <strong>in</strong> keep<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ality that Xerxes’ reign represents <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Histories</strong>, Xerxes’
