It used to be that alarm
companies would install wires and
contact sensors in every window
and entrance to your home.
These systems have proved
to be sometimes problematic
when it comes to changing
window systems to the new
energy efficient window systems.
Suddenly you might find yourself
with wires sticking out of the
window frames with no ability to
connect the sensors.
Today these systems are becoming
obsolete in the face of smart
wireless technology.
Some smart equipment will include
a base tower and you can easily
install the rest of the components on
your doors and windows. All these
components connect wirelessly with
each other. The base station has
a power backup in case of power
outages, and has a SIM card in it,
which calls for help if there are any
issues. There is no drilling into walls
or window frames as sensors have
sticky tabs. Some systems come
with contact and entry sensors,
motion detectors, key pad, panic
siren; smoke detectors, carbon
monoxide, leak detectors and
freezer detectors.
With cameras and sensors installed
around your home and property,
surveillance, monitoring and control
can be done from your cell phone.
Monitoring by alarm companies is
done remotely too, and alerts are
sent directly to your cell phone.
And in case you forgot to turn off
some lights, or the fireplace, or
close the electric blinds you can
do that from the comfort of your
location if you are away from home.
This new technology makes it far
easier for people to travel, be away
from home and enjoy peace of mind
that their property is secure. Parents
can also check in on their family and
pets.
One concern you should be
aware of though with this kind
of technology is that it has been
proven, it’s possible that the system
can be hacked using technology
to pick up pin numbers when they
are punched in at a distance. Alarm
companies are working to address
this issue, even though they can still
alert the homeowner if a system has
been compromised and an alarm
disarmed.
The onus is on the homeowner to
make sure that all their questions
and concerns are answered
regarding the security of the wireless
system when it is installed, and that
outside technologies will not be able
to compromise their system and
their peace of mind.
