The 3 Kinds of Debtors

(and How to Work With Them)

1. Those who’ve made a mistake and want to resolve it.

These individuals are the easiest ones to help. Sometimes people

overlook an invoice, go through temporary cash flow issues—or

possibly didn’t receive the bill in the first place. In these cases the

solution can be as simple as discussing payment methods (we accept

Interac eTransfer, bill payments through online banking, debit cards,

credit cards, cash and cheques to make it really easy) and proceeding

to clear up the debt right away.

2. Those who dispute the debt or want to avoid paying.

Some disputes are absolutely legitimate. The bill may have been paid

in full but improperly recorded, or we may have been provided with

3. Those who have a real problem in repaying the debt.

These situations can be the hardest to resolve, and are where

MetCredit collectors tend to shine the most brightly. Many people

find themselves in a difficult financial situation at some point in

a lifetime—I know what it’s like, and the only way out is through

strategic problem-solving. You’ve got to have an actionable plan,

and carry it through. Our collector’s job shifts into a consultative

one for the person in debt, looking at the situation holistically and

seeking out solutions beyond the debt owed to our client to achieve

an all-around better financial situation. Helping a debtor through

the challenge at hand, and to also make long-term changes is highly

rewarding to our team members. Check out some of their videos for

unscripted first-hand accounts.

Although no two situations are ever alike (I often talk about how

we’re in a people business, and people are all unique), these three

types make up nearly all of all our calls.

For business owners or AR managers, it’s important to look carefully

at the situation of the individual or business owing the debt, and

seek to understand what is going on. Is there a legitimate problem

that needs to be addressed? If the debt is valid but the customer is

resistant to paying, use our online tool to submit the account for

2022 Decorating Trends

2022 has brought along some changes to home decorating! Homeowners

are seeking refuge and looking for warm and cozy spaces.

Home finishes are reflecting this warm feel with brown and beige

finishes coming into play in 2022.

When it comes to room design, black metal is a prevalent finish in

stair railings, windows, dividing walls, kitchens and faucets. Custom

and botanical wallpapers are on either feature walls, or on all walls

of a room. Surprisingly, although the 2022 Pantone Colour of the Year

was Veri Peri, a blue hue with red undertones, most paint companies

are choosing green hues this year.

Due to concerns over the environment, people are looking for reclaimed

natural materials. Some home accessories that are popular

include geometric, metal, textured, angular, black and rough surfaces

or strong colours.

With more people spending time in their homes, there are less open

concept floorplans being requested. People are looking for dedicated

activity spaces such as home bars, meditation spaces, home theatres,

home gyms, office spaces, dining rooms, wine cellars and art studios.

Outdoor spaces are being visually extended by using cantina folding

patio doors.

Front Doors and Staircases

10 HOMEADVICE

Front Doors and Staircases. It is known in the FengShui tradition

that staircases facing directly in front of the main front door are not

particularly auspicious.

Why is this?

Specialists will say that energy will rush into the house and right up

to the first floor leaving the main floor bereft of that good energy. The

staircase can conversely have the effect of pushing good energy out

the door and out of the house.

rooms on the main floor. Others might suggest a large potted plant,

hall table or another featured accessory that will, to some extent,

focus and guide energy coming in from the front door elsewhere into

the home.

Fengshui remedies are individual to the unique layout of each home.

Check with a local expert as to how to remedy your front door and

staircase situation. Enjoy the balance of nourishing and beneficial

energy coming into your home.

With smaller houses, staircases are often positioned in front of the

door as the only option due to lack of space. Homes with larger foyers

have a distinct advantage in that the energy has space to pool on the

main floor and flow around the staircase.

Some experts might recommend a decorative screen placed in front

of the staircase to allow the energy to be deflected into adjoining

The ReStore Impact

ReStore contributes funds to Habitat for Humanity to help families like

Rhonda’s and Reier’s. This amazing couple had big plans: Reier was

working on a computer sciences degree, they started a family, and

wanted to purchase a decent house. Due to circumstances beyond

their control, they were pushed out of home ownership.

After their financial situation improved, Reier and Rhonda began

renting an old townhome. Although it was a step up, they were

concerned that rent increases would keep outpacing their income.

They worked out that they could afford a down payment if they

saved for the next 10 years and their rent didn’t keep outpacing

their income. And so they gave up on owning a home.

The couple then found Habitat, applied for home ownership, and received

a home! It’s the first home that hasn’t felt temporary. Reier and

Rhonda no longer worry about rent increases outpacing their income, or running

to the fuse box when the washing machine and the microwave are running simultaneously.

Excavators reminded one call may not

be enough

Rocky Pooke launched 2nd Call in 2009, a company that double-checks

line markings at excavation sites to ensure live and abandoned

hazards are all identified.

For years people have been told to call before they dig, but what

many don’t realize is there should be two calls made before breaking

ground.

Most are familiar with Alberta One Call, a service that allows project

managers to make a phone call and have lines in the ground marked

by the utility agencies who own them, like Fortis, ATCO or Telus.

The problem is, there are a lot of things in the ground that won’t be

checked by One Call, such as Shaw Cable fibre, because the cable

company is not a member of the service.

That’s where Rocky Pooke and his Vegreville-based company come

in. He founded Alberta 2nd Call Secondary Underground Locating

Services Ltd. to address those instances where one call is not enough.

“Back in the 70s or 80s when [One Call] was started, that’s what was in

the ground, the basic utilities,” said Pooke. “The problem is, the world

has changed and there’s a lot more stuff in the ground now that isn’t

registered with One Call. And it isn’t law that it has to be.”

As a trained fireman, master electrician and safety codes officer,

safety is of utmost concern for the owner of 2nd Call, which operated

separately from Alberta One Call.

While One Call uses its map of reported lines and contacts those companies

when needed to go out and mark their underground hazards.

Pooke said it’s not always 100 per cent

“Even though a company may be part of One Call there’s no guarantee

they’ve reported all their utilities to the One Call,” he said. “The other

issue is just because everything is reported it doesn’t necessarily get

marked, because there’s no other check. If it’s not on the map they

ain’t checking for it.”

His company got its start after a disturbing incident in 2008. An excavator

in the Vegreville area had struck a live wire, and a local utility

company was found guilty of negligence for improperly mapping the

line – which wasn’t its own. It had been doing a favour, something

commonly done then, said Pooke.

A letter was sent to contractors notifying them of the practice, and

stating utilities would no longer be marking lines for other agencies –

in other words, information on some other lines lurking underground

would not be provided if the company that had installed it wasn’t

responding to the One Call.

“Abandoned lines are all over Alberta and once utilities abandon

line they typically come off the maps,” said Pooke. “Is it possible an

abandoned line has enough product in it to hurt or kill you still? Absolutely.

“So there’s still lines out there that could have gas in them, or at least

enough gas for a flashover, and there are power lines that are still

energized, and we know because we find them and we know they’re

down there.”

His company goes out with a transmitter and two people, who walk

the area in a grid formation and flag anything their equipment picks

up, rather than relying on what comes up on a map. They’re looking

for anything locatable, he said.

If it’s possible to distinguish what it is – power, water, sewer, gas – it

is marked accordingly, and if something is picked up but unidentified,

it’s marked with a neutral colour so excavators know there is an

unknown hazard underground, he said.

“The One Call is a great first step,” said Pooke. “In my opinion it really

should have been called the First Call, because you can’t get everything

checked for properly with only the first call. You need another

call.

“If you do One Call it checks about half the stuff that’s down there. If

you do 2nd Call it double-checks the first stuff and checks for the rest

of it.”

His interest was piqued after a ruptured gas line northwest of Turner

Valley resulted in a fatality Nov. 7.

He said he spoke with Turner Valley RCMP and the fire department to

find out whether locates had been done, but it’s unclear whether One

Call visited the property.

Alberta One Call did not respond to the Western Wheel’s request for

information prior to press deadline.

“My big thing when I was checking it out was – was this preventable?”

said Pooke. “People still largely aren’t aware, and they don’t know that

two calls should be made – at least.

“We’re way past the need for two calls. This should have been happening

10 to 20 years ago, so we’re behind the eight ball but thankfully

we’re here now, it’s just to get the awareness out to everybody and

educate them on why they should be doing it.”

Krista Conrad

With several trenching and commercial jobs on the go, Pooke decided

he couldn’t put his guys in danger and began looking for companies

that would look for everything, if One Call wouldn’t be.

All he could find was companies who did locates for One Call, but nobody

who went out on their own. So he decided to fill that void with a

company of his own, and 2nd Call was born.

His biggest concern was with mismarked lines and abandoned lines,

which wouldn’t be reported by a One Call response.

Reasons You Should

Fix

Silverline

a Leak In Your Roof

Immediately

Roofing

Maintaining your home is a mammoth task that requires your attention

and time. We tend to overlook certain things, such as a dent in

the closet or a leaking tap. But, when it comes to a leak in the roof, it is

hard to ignore as it causes great inconvenience. At Silverline Roofing,

we are residential roofers and we provide expert roofing services in

Edmonton. Our services include residential roofing, skylight installation,

reroofing, roof inspections and roof repair.

Four Reasons Why You Need Roof Repair

Here’s why you need to fix your roof:

1. Ignored repairs tend to be expensive

If your roofing structure is getting weaker by the day due to water

exposure and you are avoiding roof inspection and repair, the damage

will get worse and you will have to invest a lot in the future in roof

repair. It’s advisable that you get it done in due time to avoid future

expenses.

4. Mould formation

As wet wood rots, there is fungal growth on them that cannot be

avoided for long. Mould is a fungus that can speed up the wood

rotting process and also cause health issues. When mixed with other

substances in the air, mould can form harmful toxins. To avoid respiratory

problems and prevent your roof from falling, repairing it on

time is the best alternative.

2. Increase in power consumption

A leaky roof has the potential to destroy the insulation in your attic.

Wet insulation materials take a long time to dry out, which in turn

reduces the resistance to temperature change. This will lead to heat

loss, and you will see the effect in your electricity bills.

3. Corrosion of materials

Roof leakage causes damage to wall frames and ceiling joints. Exposure

to moisture breaks wood down and it begins to rot. With time,

this might even cause the frame of the roof to weaken so much that

it collapses. Water flows downwards; hence, this not only affects the

roof but also the foundation of the house.

TIPS

Optical Illusions

Living in a small home has so many perks, but one drawback is that it often feels

cramped. It’s easy to feel like you don’t even have space to breath in your own

home. One way to combat this is by creating the illusion of vertical space in your

home. This can be achieved through using low to the ground furniture. When

you’re sitting lower to the ground the space above you increases, and so does

the optical size of the room!
