What sort of stuff do you
do? Our speciality is architectural
joinery, but we pride
ourselves on doing all sorts:
doors, sash windows, bespoke
handmade kitchens...
How many of you are there?
Five of us, now. I started off
on my own in 2000, in a tiny
space over the road, and after
ten years moved to this much
bigger building, which used to be a cattle shed.
2000… were you flooded? The joinery wasn’t, but
my house was. I’d just done it up and I had to start
all over again. Once that was done, at least there
was plenty of other work! One early job I worked on
was Bill’s.
What’s your favourite wood to work with? Does
everyone say oak? Especially quarter-sawn oak.
Douglas fir is a nice wood to work
with, too. But one of the joys of
the work is that every type of
wood has its own personality.
Is your job dangerous? Our
machines are designed to saw
through four inches of oak, so
you’ve got to be careful and
respect the danger at all times. We
make sure the place is uncluttered,
and there are no trip hazards.
Is there a recent assignment that stands out?
We did a lovely job in Rotten Row, where we had to
make and fit a three-story geometric staircase in a
Victorian house.
Does anything about the work annoy you? I’m in
the office most of the time now, so the phone, and all
the invoicing. I miss being hands on.
