ON THIS MONTH: CINEMA Film 17 Dexter Lee rounds up December’s screenings The December schedule is dominated by the new Star Wars film, The Last Jedi, which opens at Depot on Thursday 14th… or is that Wednesday 13th? Well it’s the former, to be precise: to allow you to see the movie as soon as it’s possible, Depot are showing it on all three screens at one minute past midnight. Back to the beginning of the month: from Friday the 1st there’s a week-long run for Battle of the Sexes, the year’s second big tennis movie, a dramatization of the 1973 challenge Bobby Riggs (a man) made to Billie Jean King (a woman) that led to a well-publicised match between the two, back in the day when women’s pay was just a fraction of what the men raked in. Steve Carell and Emma Stone star. In the same week there’s a run for Austrian director Michael Haneke’s latest examination of the dysfunctional nature of the modern human. This one’s called Happy End… a title that’s as dripping in irony as that of his 1997 release Funny Games. And you can also catch Manifesto, a vehicle for the acting abilities of Cate Blanchett, who plays no fewer than nine different roles. There’s a one-off screening of Amélie on the 5th, alongside a fantastic short public safety film about seat belts, Embrace, made by local director Daniel Cox, who was very influenced by Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s whimsical directing style; on the 6th there’s a Q&A with director James Lloyd following In Our Hands, a one-off screening of his documentary on farming. Chinese artist Ai Weiwei’s makes his debut as a director with a documentary about the refugee crisis, Human Flow (w/b 8th). This has led to a collaboration between Depot, the Lemon Tree Trust, Priory School and a refugee camp in Iraq, which involves an exhibition in the Studio, and a filmic exchange between Priory kids and children who live in a refugee camp, both of whom have been working on their allotments. On the 10th Raymond Briggs comes to the cinema along with director Roger Mainwood, for a Q&A after the screening of Ethel and Ernest; on the same afternoon there’s a live performance from the New Note Orchestra, consisting of musicians who are struggling with alcohol addiction. On Tuesday 12th there’s a screening of the Yiddish-language movie Menashe, about a recently widowed Hasidic Jewish man whose son – according to Hasidic custom – is taken away from him to be looked after by relatives. The screening is preceded and followed by an informal discussion event in the Studio organised by a Lewes group helping men with child separation issues. On Xmas day the Depot are providing lunch and a film for anyone who - for any reason - finds themselves on their own on the 25th (they will only go ahead if enough people show interest - please contact bonnie.macrae@lewesdepot.org). And they’re also organising a New Year’s Eve party which will follow a screening (tba) with the build-up to midnight, when this column will change its name to Film 18. 39
