HOME FROM HOME Xmas for WW2 evacuees In 1939, 2,796 unaccompanied children and 1,931 children with mothers and teachers were evacuated from London and unloaded at Polegate Station. Of these, 13 children, along with their teacher Mr Long and his wife, were assigned to Michelham Priory. They had come from the New Road School in Rotherhithe. They were well looked after during their time at the Priory. The whole ground floor of the Tudor Wing was given over as the children’s dining and games area, where they would have played games such as skittles, cards and hoop-la. The photograph shows the evacuees enjoying a meal at Michelham. On Christmas morning, when the children looked out, there on the frozen lake was a sledge laden with their presents. They certainly did not go hungry, and they would have eaten a Christmas dinner with vegetables, probably grown in [the Priory’s owners] Mr and Mrs Wright’s garden. On Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th <strong>December</strong>, we’ll be hosting a World War 2 Christmas weekend, where you can find out about the fascinating history of Christmas and how it was celebrated during this period. There will be some festive ‘austerity’ treats at the Priory Café, and wartime games in our Great Barn. Find out more at sussexpast.co.uk.
