ON THIS MONTH: ART Focus on: Untitled, 2016 by John Stezaker Your speciality is splicing two different images together. Are we invited to make up our own narrative? I don’t exclude the invitation but I am not sure that is what I do when I see an image combination. Rather I see the postcard as an interruption of the narrative, and perhaps a way of releasing the image from its legibility. I see my work as an attempt to redeem the photographic images from their linear readings, which I see as ways in which culturally we overlook images. Is there a destructive element to your work? Yes. It is often a literal de-facing. I think there has to be a violence in redeeming an image. Is there often an element of censorship? I think the most important thing that I do in my collages is hide. What remains hidden has a greater power than what is revealed. Hiding is a different way of cutting out for me. Each involves an image censorship. The point in the collages is to suggest something that is missing or hidden in order to reveal what is hidden in the original image. Do you enjoy sourcing your materials? I do, very much, enjoy my foraging. There used to be a lot more shops in London for me to browse. Nowadays, I tend to use eBay, but I have recently discovered an entire coastline of junk and second hand bookshops on the South Coast. So I have returned to my old habits there. How many of your creations end up ‘not working’. What do you do with the ones you’re not satisfied with? The vast majority of my collages are failures. I keep them, often to remind me of an idea more than as pieces. Eventually, when I can’t bear to look at them any more, they are reduced to their component fragments and reused. I understand you have your studio in Hastings. Why Hastings? I actually live in London but I have recently moved my studio to St. Leonard’s. I love that proximity to the sea and the abundance of found images in the junk and bookshops. Images seem to get washed up like flotsam in places like St. Leonard’s and all along the coast as well. I also find the experience of the sea and its rhythms very conducive to working. Which artwork would you hang on your desert island palm tree? Joseph Cornell’s Beyond the Blue Peninsula.
