hours a day would be enough for hard labor, and
the rest of the time might be filled up with
Latin, amusement, &c. To this, of course, Henry
did not object, and the arrangement was at once
concluded.
Henry found the hours longer than he ex
pected, especially when the weather was very
sultry ; but he bore with it as well as he could,
for he was anxious to be healthy and vigorous ;
and he hoped that steady, daily labor in the
open air would make him so.
Sometimes his work was planting or hoeing in
the field ; at other times the garden vegetables
required attention. Sometimes insects, that
threatened the destruction of the melons or the
cabbages, were to be destroyed ; and sometimes,
in dry weather, the watering-pot was to be used.
