hours a day would be enough for hard labor, and<br />

the rest of the time might be filled up with<br />

Latin, amusement, &c. To this, of course, Henry<br />

did not object, and the arrangement was at once<br />

concluded.<br />

Henry found the hours longer than he ex<br />

pected, especially when the weather was very<br />

sultry ; but he bore with it as well as he could,<br />

for he was anxious to be healthy and vigorous ;<br />

and he hoped that steady, daily labor in the<br />

open air would make him so.<br />

Sometimes his work was planting or hoeing in<br />

the field ; at other times the garden vegetables<br />

required attention. Sometimes insects, that<br />

threatened the destruction of the melons or the<br />

cabbages, were to be destroyed ; and sometimes,<br />

in dry weather, the watering-pot was to be used.
