88 HENRY'S BIRTHDAY.
in washing the dishes.
" Father," said Henry,
"would you never, in any possible case, give
money to men who beg for it?"
" 0 yes, Henry ; there are cases when we ought
to give it," said his father ;
"but they are rare."
" Is there any rule to be laid down," said Mrs.
Williams,
" by which we can distinguish between
those who are worthy of our charities and those
who are not "
?
" We were not so much discussing, just now,"
said Mr. Williams, " the question of their worthi
ness or unworthiness to receive our charities in
some
form or other, as whether or not it is best
to give them money."
Mrs. Williams's attention had been called away
for a moment, so that she had missed the precise
point which was at issue.
