64 HENRY'S BIRTHDAY.
However, he did not delay. The potatoes
were soon dug, and put in a basket. They were
fully grown, and nearly ripe. Henry said they
were a great deal larger than he expected, and
that they yielded well ; for he never procured so
many potatoes from so small a number of hills
before in his life. But he forgot that he had
not dug many potatoes. His life, so far at
least as concerned the garden, had been very
short.
He had dug twice as many as Mrs. Fenton
would be likely to use in a single day, and they
were rather heavy to carry so far, yet he went
bravely along: the pleasure he felt made the
load lighter. The half mile — for that was the
distance — was soon gone over, and he was at
Mrs. Fenton's door.
