82 HENRY'S BIRTHDAY.
brisk about beggars and charity, when the bell
rung.
Mr. Williams now went to the door himself.
Whether it was suspected that the beggar was
making a fresh attempt to obtain something, I
do not know ; but he had no sooner opened the
front door than, lo ! the beggar stood before
him, and, in the most imploring accents, asked
for alms.
" Will you have something to eat V said Mr.
Williams.
" I do not so much need victuals," said the
beggar, "as a little money. A man just now
gave me this shirt, and I need other articles of
clothing; but I most need money. I cannot
have a comfortable bed for my aching limbs at
night
without a little money."
