No one said a word; we were all too busy thinking<br />

about what could possibly be out there.<br />

Leif looked at the doorway for a moment, listening to<br />

the silence before turning back to us. “All right, something<br />

is going on here that we don’t understand. We<br />

need to leave, now, and call this in. This is more than<br />

we can handle.” Leif said, maintaining a calm composure.<br />

He checked the energy levels and made sure the<br />

safety was off before looking at us again. “Out. Now.”<br />

He took lead, with Khalis, Devran, and myself following<br />

right behind and Tallis taking up the rear. We<br />

moved as quietly and quickly as possible, the mystery<br />

and awe of the ship now being replaced with a growing<br />

sense of terror. Every turn of the corridor brought<br />

us closer to escape; yet each turn increased the sense of<br />

dread that threatened to overwhelm me.<br />

We finally turned the corner to the door leading<br />

back into the cargo bay we first came through, but it<br />

was now shut. We raced to the door; Leif tried the controls,<br />

and when met with no response, banged his hand<br />

against the door.<br />

“Dammit. Dammit!” Leif cursed.<br />

“What do we do now, Captain?” I asked, trying to<br />

keep the anxiety out of my voice. Before he could answer,<br />

something else answered for him; footsteps on<br />

the cold metallic floor.<br />

Tap. Tap. Tap.<br />

Devran began crying, silent sobs wracking her whole<br />

body as she leaned against the wall nearest her.<br />
