JFCS of SWFL update
Dr. Jaclynn
Faffer
JFCS
President/
CEO
As we begin the new year of 2018
we only have to look around us
and feel grateful that we live
in such beautiful surroundings. Even
though there are still tarps on roofs,
and fewer trees in our neighborhoods,
we know why Naples is often referred
to as “paradise.”
However, at JFCS of Southwest
Florida and the Naples Senior Center
we are mindful that not everyone lives
as we do. We are still in the process of
assisting individuals and families, particularly
our seniors, who are struggling
to put their lives and their surroundings
back together after Hurricane Irma. For
example, our Food Pantry numbers have
increased from 420 unduplicated individuals
served in 2016 to 687 served in
2017. Much of this due to the increase
in people seeking our assistance after
the hurricane.
The holidays of Hanukkah and
Christmas gave us the opportunity to
witness, firsthand, the generosity of our
friends and neighbors who help us support
those who turn to us during their
most vulnerable times. We brightened
the lives of 75 individuals who might
not have enjoyed their holidays. For
Unexpected gifts
By Linda Simon, WCA Special Events Director
The WCA Welcome Back Luncheon
once again provided an
opportunity to experience the
gift of friendship as evidenced by the
hearty laughter and warm hugs when
new friends and old reunited for the first
big event of the season.
But an unexpected gift also made
this year’s luncheon very special. In
the immediate aftermath of Hurricane
Irma, we found ourselves without a
luncheon venue because the Naples
Grande Beach Resort was closed due to
extensive damage to its ballroom. However,
the committee was able to quickly
find an alternate
venue at the Hyatt
Regency Coconut
Point Resort and
Spa, which allowed
a seamless transition
for our luncheon
guests. A gift
much appreciated.
However, our gifts
didn’t end quite
there. Since Hurricane
Irma’s effects
and her Temple Shalom “holiday helpers”
purchased and beautifully giftwrapped
a wonderful assortment of
presents for financially struggling families
with children, single senior women,
and Holocaust survivors. In fact, if you
dropped by our offices in mid-December
you would think you were looking in
Macy’s windows!
We are so grateful to our friends in
the community for helping us make the
holidays very special for those who turn
to us for assistance.
Our JFCS Food Pantry also benefited
from the creative generosity of
Jewish Book Festival co-chairs Robin
Mintz and Susan Pittelman. They repurposed
the beautiful movie-themed
centerpieces of popcorn and candy for
distribution to our Food Pantry. We can
always count on them to use their creativity
to help us help others!
Please “Save the Date” of February
8 for an educational community forum
on caregiving and dementia, keynoted
by Barry Petersen, CBS News Correspondent
and author of Jan’s Story. Mr.
Petersen will discuss his journey of caring
for his wife, Jan, who was diagnosed
with, and ultimately passed away from
early Alzheimer’s disease. This educational
breakfast event is taking place at
Mediterra Country Club. Tickets for the
breakfast and program are available for
$50. Please go to www.jfcsswfl.org or
call us at 239.325.4444 for more details.
I look forward to a wonderful 2018
and seeing you soon!
were still very evident
as we worked
on the final luncheon details, we wondered
if there was a way for WCA to
help hurricane victims. How could we
create a gift of gratefulness?
Why not substitute food baskets
instead of floral arrangements for table
centerpieces? This year, instead of one
person per table winning the centerpiece,
it made more sense to have 41
food baskets filled with non-perishable
foods that could feed many families, and
then be donated to the JFCS Food Pantry.
So 41 food baskets became 41 table
arrangements. Decorated with festive
bows and faux flowers, and shrinkwrapped
to show off the wide variety
of nutritional foods within, our gift was
created by a talented group of volunteers
who took great pride in making every
basket special and appealing. Thanks
go to Carol Weisberg, Elaine Soffer,
Dolores Tucker, Gloria Rogers, Harriett
Kleinman, Ida Margolis, Robin Mintz
and Linda Simon.
Finally, a call went out to those
attending the luncheon to bring a few
personal care items to be donated to
the JFCS Food Pantry. The response
was overwhelming. At the end of the
luncheon, Toby Kosloff coordinated the
Carol Weisberg makes bows for the baskets
transfer of 41 food baskets and bags of
personal care items to the Food Pantry,
an amount that filled the bed of a pickup
truck and the back of an SUV.
In the end, there was a fourth and
final gift, and it was to ourselves: making
a difference in the lives of others
enhances the friendships we share
through WCA.
