Exciting 25 th season and new venue
for the Naples Orchestra & Chorus
By Arlene Yedid
The Naples Orchestra & Chorus
begins an exciting season in
February. The series takes place
at a new venue – the lovely, comfortable
Temple Shalom sanctuary in Naples. In
celebration of the 25 th anniversary of the
NOC, Artistic Director Max Rabinovitsj
has programmed an excellent concert
series with exceptional guest artists.
On February 3 and 4, violinist Jinjoo
Cho performs “Mendelsohn’s Concerto
for Violin.” Jinjoo Cho has established
herself as one of the most vibrant, engaging,
charismatic violinists of her generation.
The program also includes Haydn’s
“Symphony No. 101, The Clock.”
Performances on February 17
and 18 honor the 100 th anniversary of
Leonard Bernstein’s birth with “West
Side Story Suite” and the gorgeous
“Make Our Garden Grow.” The program
also celebrates The Great American
Songbook. The guest artist is soprano
Carolann Sanita, a singer and actress
Max Rabinovitsj
with an international career in musicals.
The audience will hear a rare treat –
Conductor Max Rabinovitsj on violin
and Choral Director Stephen Parker on
saxophone performing “Duo.”
Performances on March 17 and 18
feature the golden age of MGM film musicals
and salute Broadway musical hit
shows, such as Kiss Me Kate, Brigadoon
and An American in Paris.
Guest artist Paul York displays his
artistry in Haydn’s “Cello Concerto No.
1” on April 14 and 15. York’s extensive
career includes solo concerts, chamber
music and CD recordings that have
earned him rave reviews, honors and
awards. Also featured are Rossini’s
“The Barber of Seville Overture” and
Handel’s “Coronation Anthem.”
On May 5 and 6, the Naples Orchestra
& Chorus performs Beethoven’s
“Symphony #8 in F Major.” Guest artist
Suzanne Kirton, the principal flutist
with the Naples Philharmonic, presents
Mozart’s” Concerto in G Major.”
This season marks the fifth year
for Max Rabinovitsj as conductor of
the NOC. His extensive, distinguished
career has included serving as concertmaster
of the Cincinnati Symphony and
St. Louis Symphony.
Rabinovitsj accepted the position of
artistic director with a specific mission
of leading the ensembles to a higher
level of musicianship. His rehearsals
are rigorous for the orchestra. He has
coached the orchestra to seek the beauty
of sound in every note. The result is that
the NOC is an exceptional ensemble.
Assistant Conductor and Choral
Director Stephen Parker is a prestigious
choral director with a 17-year tenure at
First United Methodist Church.
Concert goers love Max and Stephen.
Their musical passion and talent
shape remarkable performances. Max
enlivens the concerts with his comments
given before each piece, and
his conducting style is pure eloquence.
Stephen is a remarkable choral director,
establishing great rapport with the
chorus, orchestra and audience.
“We are very excited that Temple
Shalom will be our new home this year,”
January 2018 Federation Star
said Rabinovitsj. “The acoustics, amenities
and infrastructure are perfect. I
invite the community to come. May we
always have the joy of music!”
Season tickets are now on sale for
“JEWISH JAZZ 2”
at Beth Tikvah
Clarinetist Steve Loew and pianist
Daniel Weiser of AmiciMusic
(www.amicimusic.com) will return
to Beth Tikvah for a sequel to their
very popular “JEWISH JAZZ” program
which they performed last January.
“JEWISH JAZZ 2” will present
new and exciting music that explores
the connections between Jewish religious
and klezmer music and the rise
of American Jazz. As the waves of
Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe
met up with the Great Migration
of African Americans from the South,
New York City became the breeding
ground of a hybrid music that combined
elements of both cultures. Many of the
most popular composers/performers of
jazz and swing were Jewish, including
Irving Berlin, George Gershwin,
Harold Arlen and Benny Goodman.
This program will feature some early
songs from the Yiddish Theater as well
as songs from the Yiddish Swing movement,
such as “Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen”
and “And the Angels Sing,” that were
based on old klezmer tunes reformulated
into the new jazzier and popular sound.
Also included are songs of Harold
Arlen, the son of a Jewish cantor who
spent several years writing songs for
the Cotton Club in Harlem, along with
some great Benny Goodman arrangements
and a Clarinet Concerto by Artie
Shaw that intersperses boogie-woogie
and Jewish scales.
Finally, they will also perform a
fun arrangement of Gershwin’s epochmaking
“Rhapsody in Blue,” perhaps
the best example of the American Melting
Pot of sound.
Clarinetist Steve Loew and pianist Daniel Weiser
The concert will be at Beth Tikvah
of Naples (1459 Pine Ridge Rd.)
on Wednesday, January 31 at 7:00
p.m. The cost is $30, which includes
a post-concert reception with dessert
and drinks. Seating will be limited. To
