The WCA Welcome Back Luncheon – and the day after

On Wednesday, November 8,
the ballroom at the Hyatt Regency
Coconut Point Resort
and Spa was abuzz as more than 400
women warmly greeted each other at
the Women’s Cultural Alliance’s 2017
Welcome Back Luncheon.
Linda Simon, Luncheon Chair, and
her creative and dedicated Luncheon
Committee – Elaine Soffer, Nancy Kahn
and Robin Mintz – planned a beautiful
afternoon! No one would have known
about the challenges they had faced and
successfully met when Hurricane Irma
made it necessary to find a new venue
for the luncheon.
Chicago’s “Breakfast Queen,”
entrepreneur and author Ina Pinkney,
captivated the audience with her personal
story of perseverance to become
a successful Chicago restaurateur. In
addition to inspiring her audience, Ina
generously donated the proceeds from
the sales of her book to the Federation.
Other highlights of the afternoon
included what has now become a Welcome
Back Luncheon tradition: The
presentation of WCA’s check to Dr.
Jaclynn Faffer, President/CEO of JFCS
of Southwest Florida, which this year
was for $2,500. Dr. Faffer expressed her
great appreciation for WCA’s continual
support of JFCS. Our contribution to
JFCS this year, however, was not only
financial. Due to the havoc of Hurricane
Irma, the JFCS Food Pantry was experiencing
greater demand than usual. In
addition to our cash contribution, WCA
filled a truck and a car with donations to
the JFCS Food Pantry that included 41
creatively designed food basket centerpieces
filled with non-perishable food
items, and bag upon bag of personal
care items that WCA members brought
to the luncheon.
WCA’s share of the 50/50 drawing
was designated to support the Federation’s
Youth Scholarship Fund. Barbara
Suden relayed a heartwarming story
about the impact that enabling children
to attend Jewish Summer Camp has
on building a strong Jewish identity.
She then presented a check for more
than $1,700 to Federation Community
Program Coordinator Renee’ Bialek
for the Fund. In addition to winning
cash prizes from the 50/50 drawing, 34
WCA members won tickets to one of the
two Jewish Book Festival events being
sponsored by WCA.
Everyone had a wonderful time!
WCA members are most grateful to
Linda Simon, her committee, the WCA
Board of Directors, and the many volunteers
who helped with the luncheon.
The day after the luncheon, WCA
members had the opportunity to watch
the award-winning film, Breakfast at
Ina’s, that documented the last 31 days
of Ina’s renowned restaurant. Two
showings of the film were offered on
Thursday. Ina introduced the documentary,
explaining how it came to be
made. Afterwards, she took questions
and shared several personal stories,
recounting many of the life lessons she
learned along the way. Among them,
which certainly reflects Ina’s journey, is:
“It takes less energy to be courageous
than it does to be afraid.”
