How many friendships and family connections have been strained or even broken by our inability to exchange our views in a civil manner? We think it’s time to come together and learn – or relearn – the tradition of civil discourse. Temple Shalom will present a forum on Thursday, February 1 from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. to address this very issue. What do our Jewish values tell us about how to have a civil and frank exchange of ideas? How can we discuss the news of the day to provoke new ways of thinking? Is it possible to change our minds – or the minds of our friends and family – without destroying the very fabric of our connections? Rooted in our tradition is the framework for civil discourse. Jane Schiff, Board Chair of the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples, will Eizehu chacham? Who is wise? One who learns from everyone. join us. Jane helped to develop the Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA) Civility Campaign. Its goal is simple: “As a community, we must commit ourselves and ask others to open their hearts and minds to healthy, respectful dialogue based on our love for our neighbors and our people. We therefore agree to treat others with decency and honor and to set ourselves as models for civil discourse, even when we disagree with each other. We commit ourselves to this course to preserve an essential element of a community – the ability to meet and talk as brothers and sisters.” We think it’s time for our Jewish community to come together.
