4A Federation Star January 2018 Israel is lovely in the spring. Come experience it! By Jane Schiff, Federation Board Chair The Federation Mission to Israel is scheduled for April 28 to May 7 with an optional extension for a few days to Eilat and Petra, Jordan, returning on May 11. The applications are available and NOW is the time to sign up. We will close the applications on February 15. There are spaces left, but do not get shut out from this opportunity to experience Israel in a unique way. We will be exposed to history, art, our Federation at work in Israel, an Air Force base, the U.S. Consulate in Jerusalem that services Palestinians as well as Israelis, private tours, and speakers who will give you new insights and updates that are never available to tourists. We will celebrate Lag B’Omer at a bonfire with Israeli students we support through our annual campaign contributions. We will celebrate Shabbat with Lone Soldiers from the Israel Defense Forces. These are soldiers who have no family in Israel, sometimes volunteers from other countries such as the U.S., or recent olim who have made Aliyah without their families. They will have Shabbat dinner with us and you will get to hear their inspiring stories. If you have never been to Israel, this is a chance to see the country from many different points of view. There will be a day for you to go to Masada and the Dead Sea. We will all visit Independence Hall to see where, 70 years ago, the State of Israel was born with David Ben-Gurion leading us into our own homeland. We will have our own Scholars-in-Residence, Rabbi James and Jane Perman, with us to help us understand the historical and religious significance of what we are seeing. Their insights from the many trips they have taken will help all of us consider and reconsider our relationship to this other homeland. Do not worry. There will be plenty of shopping time built in at various locations. We spend four nights in Tel Aviv and four or five nights in Jerusalem, depending on whether you are taking the extension. If you are extending the trip, there are three nights in Eilat. All hotels are 4-star hotels. Most dinners and lunches are included. Daily Israeli breakfasts at all hotels are ALWAYS a highlight of any visit. A ll participants are expected to be at least $1,000 donors to the annual campaign. For donors who already give at that level or above, we are requesting at least a $1,000 campaign increase for the 2018 campaign. Most participants to Federation Israel Missions realize how important their gift is to the social needs of the country. So the suggested gifts are often significantly more than what is recommended here. This is a special trip that we hope to repeat in a few years, but the only one that we will be offering on the occasion of the celebration of Israeli’s 70 th anniversary. Please consider joining us. JEWISH FEDERATION Jewish Community Relations Council update By Betty Schwartz, Chair Recently, I was asked to briefly explain the purpose of the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples (JFGN) and its functions to a non-Jewish community group. I was obligated to look at JFGN from a different perspective and how it relates to the larger Naples community. I was amazed by the many ways JFGN and its Jewish Community Relations Council have a positive impact in our community. Federation provides financial support for agencies that serve the entire community. JFCS of Southwest Florida and the Naples Senior Center provide many types of assistance to needy families, enriching activities and services to all seniors, and programs and care for Alzheimer’s patients and their families. The Holocaust Museum & Education Center of SWFL is another organization that offers important benefits for the Greater Naples community by teaching tolerance and the importance of standing up against bigotry and hate through its many programs, particularly through schools. Both JFCS and the Holocaust Museum receive support from Federation. The JCRC aspires to further the goals of fostering tolerance and understanding in our community, and fighting for social justice for all segments of our society through our outreach activities. The Stand Up For Justice Award recognizes outstanding efforts by a teacher, or other education professional, who has furthered anti-bullying, kindness and Jewish Community Tikkun Olam J C R Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of Collier County tolerance in their school. The Human Needs Award (a cash award) is given annually to organizations that benefit the entire community by meeting an otherwise unmet need. These awards are very much appreciated by the recipients and are gratifying and meaningful to us all. The interaction with various groups in the greater community engenders a feeling of common bonds and builds trust. The “Shop With a Sheriff” program sponsored by JFGN and made possible by a generous donor, counteracts the C distrust that can exist between law enforcement and minority communities. The joy that this program brings is wonderful. The Jewish Federations throughout Florida cooperate with each other by monitoring legislation brought before the Florida Senate and House. Many issues arise that are of importance to the Jewish community as well as the general community. We have been able to make our concerns known and have influence over the outcome of legislation. During the last legislative session, we were able to preserve benefits for the elderly, the disabled and other groups in need of continued support. Supporting efforts to maintain a strong public education is of importance to all. Our Jewish Federations have a goal to promote social justice for all. I hope we can find ways to share these ideals, and the many ways in which we act for the common good, with our non-Jewish friends. Ron Suskind is an American journalist and author. He was the senior national affairs writer for The Wall Street Journal from 1993 to 2000, where he won the 1995 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing four articles that became the starting point for his first book, A Hope in the Unseen. His other books include The Price of Loyalty, The One Percent Doctrine, The Way of the World, Confi dence Men, and his memoir, Life, Animated: A Story of Sidekicks, Heroes, and Autism. Suskind has written about the George W. Bush Administration, the Barack Obama Administration, and related issues of the United States’ use of power. The film Life, Animated is based on journalist Ron Suskind’s 2014 book Life, Animated: A Story of Sidekicks, Heroes, and Autism, which tells the story of his son, Owen Suskind, who struggled with autism and learned how to communicate with the outside world through his love of Disney films. (Please note that this film will NOT be shown at the event.) Life Animated will be screened at no charge for WCA and MCA members on Thursday, January 4 in the Naples Daily News Community Room. Mandel, director of the Middle East Political Information Network (MEPIN), will present “An Insider’s View from Capitol Hill of American and Israeli National Security Interests” on Thursday, January 18 at 7:00 p.m. at Temple Shalom, 4630 Pine Ridge Road. This is Dr. Mandel’s second visit to the Naples area. In addition to his work with MEPIN, Dr. Mandel is the Northeast co-chair of StandWithUs, an international organization dedicated to educating the public about the Middle East and Israel. He has also written articles for The Jerusalem Post. Registration is required for this event. The cost is $18 in advance or $25 at the door. Student admission is free by pre-registration only. This unique educational experience allows Jewish and Arab high school students Naples Klezmer Revival Band wants you! At present, the band is looking for a keyboard player to replace recentlyretired Art Isenberg, and a vocalist to share duties with the incredibly busy Jane Galler. Two members of the Hand in Hand program, Rebecca Bardach and Mohamad Marzouk, will share their experiences with the program. Hand in Hand Center for Jewish-Arab Education seeks to lay the foundation for Israelis and Palestinians for a shared future. Most of the schools in Israel are segregated, which makes this program more unique. The hope is that as these students grow up they will be more understanding and accepting of each other’s culture. The community is invited to attend this program on Tuesday, February 20, at 7:00 p.m. at Beth Tikvah, 1459 Pine Ridge Road. The cost for this event is $10 in advance and $15 at the door.
