Using everyday experiences and her family that includes a teenage daughter as the fodder for her material, Rudner delights audiences with her brand of witty humor and pointed delivery. A master of the art form of comedic timing, she utilizes an intuitive melding of rhythm, tempo and the oft-elusive “pause” to deliver at every performance. As a young dancer on Broadway, Rudner noted the void of female comedians. With a can-do attitude and sheer determination to succeed, she switched gears and plunged headfirst into her craft and hasn’t turned back. Today, acclaimed as having the longest-running solo comedy act in the Vegas show circuit, this whirlwind comedian shows no sign of slowing down. With a quick response, vivacity and innate comedic sense, she makes the mundane sparkle in new ways: “I think men who have a pierced ear are better prepared for marriage; they’ve experienced pain and bought jewelry,” and “My husband and I are either going to buy a dog or have a child. We can’t decide whether to ruin our carpet or ruin our lives.” A dual resident of California and Las Vegas, Rudner enjoys life with her writer, producer husband Martin Bergman, daughter Molly and beloved pooch. “I enjoy walking my dog, Twinkle,” Rudner said. And then to her dog, “Twinkle, I am doing my interview first, and then we are having our walk.” This is the interview. Rita Rudner How did you make the leap from dancer to comedic performance? Rita Rudner: I started ballet at age four. I always wanted only to be a dancer. People said I had a myopic personality and only saw dancing, dancing, dancing. I was in a local Cuban ballet company in Florida and performed in Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, all the ballets, and it was a wonderful experience. So, all I thought about was dancing, until age 27. Then I was in Annie on Broadway doing my first part and noted that there were a lot of dancers, but not a lot of comedians. I only knew Joan Rivers and Phyllis Diller. I would go to auditions on Broadway and there were thousands of women dancers, but only two women comedians. I thought why not try that? I did, and I loved it. Were you a naturally funny person? I was never funny. My friends were funnier than I was. Everyone asked how did this ever happen? It was just determination. I think determination is the most important thing that you can have. But, it’s more than just saying, “I want this.” I said, “I have to do something about this every single day.” Every single day, I have to talk into a microphone. Every single day, I have to learn something new. Every single day, I have to write a joke. So, that’s what you do, and it worked out, and now, I still love it. It was the best decision I ever made. But it wasn’t that I didn’t love dancing. I love dancing, and I love being on Broadway, but I didn’t want to be on Broadway anymore. I got a call a few years ago to do a part in a Broadway musical, but I said, “Why would I ever want to do that?” Who writes your material? I write everything. I learned how to write and get inspiration thinking about everything. It could be a word, a phrase, something I see, something I read, something I do or something somebody else does. It keeps you active. I talk a lot about my experiences, about being the mother of a teenager and about being married for 30 years. I stay away from politics because I have very firm political opinions, and I feel everyone doesn’t have to hear my opinion, even though I know I’m right. How often do you change material? Almost all the time, but not completely. I always add things and subtract things. I just did a new comedy special about two weeks ago in downtown L.A., and it was about 95% new material. Sometimes I have to throw in jokes for links to go from one to another. The more you do comedy, you run out of life experiences. But luckily, I keep having life experiences because I have a daughter and a husband, and I have a lot of electronics in my house that I don’t understand, so I am still okay with material. You’ve done acting, comedy, have been on Broadway, and you are an author. Which do you love most? Stand-up comedy. Writing and performing is the thing I love to do the most. Thinking of a joke and telling it to an audience, and then hearing the laughter is fantastic. It makes everybody feel better. It makes me feel better that people are laughing. It makes people feel better that they are laughing. It’s what you call a win-win. How much I appreciate people coming to see me, as I know it’s a changing world. I love doing what I do, but unless people show up, I don’t do what I do. So, whenever audiences come, I so appreciate it. It’s not easy to get dressed, get in traffic, find a parking space and do all the things that people have to do. I always thank them for coming out.
