2A Federation Star January 2018 Renee’s community program & events corner Renee’ Bialek Community Program Coordinator What a fantastic Community Chanukah Celebration the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples hosted on the lawn at Mercato on Wednesday evening, December 13! A huge thank you goes to the Naples Klezmer Revival Band for its fabulous job entertaining us at the event. For the 15 th year, the Naples Klezmer Revival Band has supported the Jewish Federation by playing in our annual Chanukah celebration. The band has been blessed by the stability of its members. Some band members have been in it from the very beginning: Jane Galler, vocalist and guitar; Arnold Saslavsky, drums; and Stu Warshauer, leader and fiddle player. Martin Cohn on clarinet and Perry Switzen on bass have played with the band for 10 years! Newer member Stewart Ross on trombone is playing for his second year, and accordionist Gerry Pyser and fiddle player Ari Schneider are the band’s newest members. Additional appreciation goes to: Mayor Bill Barnett Sheriff Kevin Rambosk and the entire Sheriff’s Department who made sure we were all safe during the outdoor event Kevin Aizenshtat, emcee Jane Schiff, Board Chair of Jewish Federation of Greater Naples Temple Shalom Preschool and Temple Shalom Religious School students who sang their hearts out! The celebration at Cambier Park will continue until 3:00 p.m. with JEWISH FEDERATION Looking forward to an exciting New Year Jeffrey Feld Federation President/ CEO Once again, we have arrived at a transitional time of year. Calendar year 2017 is ending and the new calendar year of 2018 is about to begin. This timeframe is generally met with nostalgia and excitement. And yes, that is true for all of us at the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples. We look back at our experiences over the past year. We were wonderfully entertained by Tovah Feldshuh at the Power of Community Celebration. We enjoyed hearing from author Scott Turow at the Evy Lipp People of the Book Cultural Event. The Second Annual Jewish Book Festival brought us a multitude of authors over a three-month period. Through the efforts of the Jewish Community Relations Council, our Federation brought to this community its first annual “Day of Learning.” To celebrate Israel’s 69 th birthday, Federation hosted Israel Fest at Fleischmann Park. This represented the largest gathering we ever had for this type of program. This was one of the activities of the Israel Advocacy Committee. In addition, the IAC presented numerous speakers/ documentaries to our community. And, once again, the Israel Scouts Friendship Caravan entertained in our community. They performed at Temple Shalom, YMCA day camp, for the residents of Moorings Park, and at the New Hope Ministries Church. Through a variety of Federation activities, we were able to engage with members of the Jewish community and with members from the Greater Naples community. Through our JCRC, the Catholic-Jewish Dialogue once again provided a Kristallnacht Commemoration, as well as numerous other programs where there were opportunities for the Catholic and Jewish communities to come together. In addition, our Federation also worked with the Evangelical Pastors of Southwest Florida for other engagements. Chanukah would not be the same without our menorah lighting at Mercato. Hundreds of people join us for this festivity each year. Because of you and your commitment to the annual campaign, we were able to help provide meaningful experiences for Jewish youth here, in Israel and around the world. BBYO is a perfect example of what our community has come together to provide. Our community also provides financial wherewithal to support programming for youth-at-risk in Israel and a program called Neve Michael. We provide resources for Jewish continuity through educational opportunities. We provide funds to keep Judaism alive in Kiev, Ukraine, by supporting the preschool at the Tikvah congregation. Here in Naples, through the allocation process, monies are provided to Temple Shalom, Chabad and Beth Tikvah for financial need-based scholarships for families who could not otherwise afford to send their children to religious school. In addition, monies are provided for financial need-based scholarships to Temple Shalom and Chabad for Jewish preschoolers whose families could not afford to pay the tuition for their children to go to a Jewish preschool. The Jewish Federation is here in times of need. We respond to most disasters. In 2017, disaster struck our community. Our Federation was able to accumulate and distribute over $100,000 to congregations, JFCS and individuals who were severely affected by Hurricane Irma. It’s nice to know that our Federation and community come together to help. 2017 saw our Federation go through a strategic planning process and commission a Needs Assessment/Demographic Study. The results of these two efforts will help our community as we go forward. Our community is growing. The needs of our community are growing. Our Federation is taking the steps necessary to plan to meet those needs the best way possible. Without your continued generous support of the annual campaign, we cannot meet those needs. We are committed to providing for Jewish continuity, supporting our Israel and Overseas Partners, and especially committed to the humanitarian services provided by our JFCS. This is our home and we need to take care of it properly! Thank you for all you have done. I thank you in advance for all you will do to help us build and grow our community. Moving on up! menorah lighting, JFCS, five synagogues, the Holocaust Museum, WCA, MCA, The Evy Lipp People of the Book Cultural Event, Power of Community Celebration, Lions of Judah, Pomegranates, Mix & Mingle, Maimonides Society, Cardozo Society, BBYO, Israel Advocacy, Jewish Community Relations, and so much more, make this an exciting community for Jews who a mere 50 years ago were excluded from even settling in many areas of Greater Naples. We are now a proud, engaged, loving, inviting community. It is on the foundations of those who laid them that we are now building. And, most importantly, it is because of YOU and your contributions. We support BBYO, a growing program for our Jewish teens that involves them in meaningful Jewish experiences, and enables our Jewish youth to explore areas of leadership, service, Israel education and Jewish values to ensure the continuity within the Jewish community and beyond. We provide financial need-based scholarships for Jewish children to attend preschool, religious school and summer camp for Beth Tikvah, Chabad of Naples, and Temple Shalom. We offer financial support of Scholar-in-Residence programs, cultural series and Jewish Film Festivals to the Jewish Congregation of Marco Island, Naples Jewish Congregation and Temple Shalom. We support Jewish organizations nationally, and overseas we support programs that ensure children in Russia have Jewish identity, and transportation to camps. Your gifts touch so many young and older lives in Israel: food and transportation for the elderly at Yad LaKashish; academic, social, psychological, cultural and welfare services to the socially and economically disadvantaged at the Sapir Community Center in Kfar Saba; therapeutic riding lessons for the disabled at the Red Mountain Therapeutic Riding Center; provisions and therapies for children in extreme crisis at Neve Michael Children’s Village; support for families who use the Sderot Indoor Recreation Center; and so many other worthwhile programs. Finally, your gifts support mental health services, senior outreach and support services within the community provided by JFCS of Southwest Florida.
