Girls on the Run held its biannual 5K last month at the University of Central Florida, celebrating the culmination of the fall 2017 season and the limitless potential of the girls in the program. It was the first time GOTR Orlando sponsored its own 5K fun run, which signifies the council’s growth and impact since its inception in 2008. The fall season included nearly 1,000 girls in third through eighth grades and more than 200 volunteer coaches, many of whom teach at the schools that offer the program. More than 100 marathon officials from across the country gathered at Rosen Shingle Creek for the annual Marathon Security Summit to share ideas and explore new methods for safety and security. The goal of the summit is to implement best practices by addressing major safety and security issues through input from marathon event administrators; governmental officials; city, state and federal law enforcement personnel; city planners; emergency managers; first responders; health services; and fire and hazardous materials services. The event resulted from NCS4 Advisory Board feedback about current safety and security issues facing marathon events in the aftermath of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings. Former “Bobby Curtis” Florida state doubles winners include two-time NCAA champion Danielle Collins, former Women’s Tennis Association doubles world No. 1-ranked and Wimbledon winner Corina Morariu, and former Association of Tennis Professionals player Wayne Odesnik. As the baseball world held its annual Winter Meetings in Orlando, USA Baseball and Major League Baseball co-hosted a special Fun At Bat event for young students at Bay Meadows Elementary School. Approximately 100 thirdgraders participated in a series of fun bat-and-ball activities that focused on fundamentals and character development, which was run by Orange County Public Schools physical educators. The effort was part of Fun At Bat, a program by MLB and USA Baseball designed to offer introductory, modified and in-school bat-and-ball activities for younger students. Each child also received a USA Baseball championship principals book; Fun At Bat T-shirt; USA Baseball hat, bat and ball set; and a signed certificate of achievement to take home. OCPS adopted the Fun At Bat program to implement in school as part of the physical education curriculum. Approximately 87,000 students in the district will engage in the program as part of their in-school physical education curriculum, which is the largest participation of any market in this initial Fun At Bat year.
