IT’S NOT WINTER WITHOUT THE PROMISE OF A NEW PAIR OF BOOTS - OR THREE! - ON THE
HORIZON. AMY NORBURY ROUNDS UP SOME OF THIS SEASON’S STYLE WINNERS
THIS season’s boots are made for walking, wearing
and wowing, with classic styling, bold colours and
head-turners all vying for attention across the catwalks
and high streets.
Boots are the ubiquitous footwear choice for winter,
but this season they’re not just a blank canvas to
complement your winter wardrobe; they’re here to
take make style waves in their own right.
This season’s penchant for showy boots is mostly
thanks to those jaw-dropping Swarovski crystalencrusted
slouchy Saint Laurent beauties which
immediately made it to the top of every fashion
editor’s wish list after their debut at the AW17 Paris
Fashion Week. And while the nearly £7,000 price tag
might be a step too far for most of us mere mortals,
their influence has been far-reaching, with elements of
the already iconic design seen all over the high street
this winter.
While blinged up boots are great for making
a statement, if you’re looking for a more solid
investment then focus on the Saint Laurent boots’
deliciously slouchy silhouette and the funky yet
practical Eighties-style cone heel, both of which can
be found on boots galore this season. The slouch lends
a casual air, perfect for throwing on with an oversized
jumper dress or over leggings or super-skinny jeans for
easy peasy daytime styling, and the cone heel gives just
that little hint of glam as opposed to a flat boot, while
still being comfortable enough for all-day wear.
Classic styles are back at the forefront, albeit with a
slight twist. You really can’t go wrong with a blockheeled
knee-high pair, but instead of the usual black
or tan leather, opt for a rich burgundy or ditch leather
altogether in favour of soft suede or velvet. The same
applies to ankle boots; while the shape is a total classic,
look out for hot red, funky prints and the season’s boot
colour du jour - white. Forget the issue of practicality,
white boots were spotted all over the AW17 catwalks
and show no signs of going away any time soon.
If you’re sticking to safe, solid colours then
embellishments including buckles, shearling and
cowgirl-style stitching all add a little something extra.
If you invested well last year and are only in need of
one new boot style this season, make it the pointed,
thin-heeled sock boot. These second-skin, easy-topull-on
boot and sock hybrid are light as air on the
foot and give the ultra-flattering illusion of super slim
ankles due to their stretchy hugging effect. With ankle,
knee high and even thigh-high versions, they’ll keep
you toasty warm all winter long.
