RESTORE YOUR CONFIDENCE
Let’s face the truth: hair plays a vital role in our self-image and appearances. With the onset of male
pattern baldness, many of us will find ourselves scratching our heads for an effective solution. Hair
transplantation is fast-becoming a popular choice for individuals seeking to combat hair loss.
Medical Director, Dr Mohamad Nasir Zahari sheds some light on hair transplantation.
Dr Mohamad Nasir Zahari
Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive and
Cosmetic Surgeon Medical Director
MBBS (Melbourne), FRCS (Edinburgh), MS (UKM)
Dr Nasir is the Medical Director of Beverly Wilshire Medical Centre. With 18
years of experience under his belt, Dr Nasir is one of the top plastic surgeons in
Malaysia. He was awarded with Bachelor of Medicine from University of Melbourne
in 1988 and continued his post graduate degree at The Royal College of Surgeons
(FRCS) in Edinburgh (1993). Registered with the National Specialist Register,
Academy of Medicine of Malaysia, Dr Nasir is also a member of the elite Malaysian
Association of Plastic, Aesthetic, and Craniomaxillofacial Surgeons (MAPACS).
5 Minutes with Dr. Nasir
Why did you specialise in cosmetic surgery?
“It began during my tenure as a general surgeon. Cosmetic
surgery is where science combines with art. Science is where we
learn about the anatomy and the physiological changes in the
body that result in sagging skin and breasts. The art comes in
the enhancements that we make. Everyone see things differently
and subjectivity usually defies science. Giving my best to my
patients and meeting their expectations, gives me tremendous
encouragement in my work.”
Beverly Wilshire Medical Centre is the first to
introduce modern hair transplantation technology in
Malaysia. How big is the market for hair transplant?
“There is a huge market – about one in five people starting from
their 20s experience hair thinning and the number goes up as they
age. There are very few centres that provides proven, permanent
solutions to address this issue and we are proud to be the first. The
success rate of this method is 95 percent.”
Let’s Talk about Hair Transplantation
What causes baldness or extreme hair loss?
“In men, male pattern baldness or androgenic alopecia occurs
when male hormones start acting on hair follicles. Due to long term
exposure to male hormones, hair becomes thinner; eventually,
it becomes so fine that it’s not visible to the naked eye, resulting
in the condition we know as ‘baldness’. Men have the genetic
predisposition towards male pattern baldness, which can be
accelerated by certain lifestyle choices such as smoking or having
a poor diet, and stress. It’s worth noting that hair loss is starting
to affect men from a younger age these days; possibly due to a
combination of these two factors.”
Who are suitable candidates for hair transplantation?
“Hair transplantation is suitable for individuals suffering from varying
levels of hair loss (for example, receding hairlines or bald spots)
who wish to improve their appearance. Some individuals might think
that there is no hope if they are completely bald, but this is not true.
When the scalp is examined closely (at a microscopic level) you’ll
find that the hair follicles are still there – they are just unable to
produce sufficient thick hair to give one’s scalp coverage.”
How does hair transplantation work?
“Hair transplantation involves the simple procedure of extracting hair
from the donor area and inserting it to the affected area. Through
the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) technique, the most ideal hair
transplantation method today, hair follicles are extracted using a
cylindrical punch and planted to the recipient area with the aid of an
implanter or tweezer. With the advancements of scientific research,
we are now able to transplant hair between the two areas, ensuring
that it retains its own characteristics and is not affected by male
hormones when inserted. Each step is taken with utmost care and
attention to detail as factors such as how the hair is put in, not to
mention the angle, direction and depth at which it is planted can
Advantages of the Follicular Unit Extraction
(FUE) technique:
• Painless – simple local anaesthesia is sufficient.
• Little bleeding and has no deep stitches.
• No dressings after the procedure.
• No risk infection or complications.
• Heals extremely quickly and is almost invisible in the
days following the procedure.
• Several procedures can be conducted without
damaging the donor area.
• Adapted to correcting the early stages of baldness in
men and diffusing alopecia in women.
• Possibility of short ‘a la carte’ sessions.
show different results. The procedure can last between three to six
hours, depending on the size of the treatment area. Individuals
with severe hair loss may be subjected to repeat procedures.”
Does it hurt?
“The entire procedure is done under local anaesthesia; patients are
awake and can spend time reading a book or even watching DVDs.
The scalp will be a bit red and sore afterwards. Most patients will
head back to work the next day.”
How soon can I see results?
“The transplanted hair usually starts growing in about two to six
months. Full results can be seen after 10 to 12 months. It’s not an
overnight miracle; the process may be time consuming, but you can
be assured that the transplanted hair will stay with you for life.”
What are the benefits of hair transplantation?
“Hair plays a big role in our appearances – it greatly affects how
we see ourselves and how others perceive us too. It’s safe to say
that by undergoing hair restoration, individuals who suffer from hair
loss are able to regain self-confi dence, doing wonders for selfesteem.
From an aesthetic point of view, hair transplantation can
also make people look younger. When the hairline recedes, the
forehead becomes more exposed, distorting the ratio of the face.
With hair transplantation, we are able to balance out the tipped facial
ratio, returning the years and youth although other facial features
may remain unchanged.”
CREATING WITHOUT LIMITS
USING THE FINEST INGREDIENTS AND HIS UNRESTRICTED IMAGINATION, CHEF
FEDERICO MICHIELETTO DOES NOT JUST COOK – HE CREATES. ALISON ELFWING HEADS OVER
TO THE ACCLAIMED MARINI’S ON 57 TO HAVE A CHAT.
PHOTOGRAPHS LAW SOO PHYE
— Saffron-infused cheese with droplets of eight-year-old Vincotto
Marini’s on 57 has been setting the Kuala
Lumpur dining scene abuzz since its opening
in September last year. Spanning the entire
highest floor of Petronas Tower 3, one would
be forgiven if the initial reaction to the panoramic
view of the city and the iconic Petronas
Twin Towers, just metres away, is nothing
short of jaw dropping.
A native of Mogliano Veneto, Italy, Chef
Federico Michieletto now heads the kitchen
at what is hailed as ‘Kuala Lumpur’s hottest
Italian restaurant’. Chef Federico is a master
at creating new, original dishes through his
keen sense of curiosity for the unlikely pairing
of ingredients.
His experience spans across the continents,
starting off in Italy, then on to Singapore
and Malaysia. He has done it all; worked in
small, hot and cramped kitchens, cooked in
Europe’s best restaurants and five-star hotels,
and opened and managed 14 outlets for a corporate
group here in Malaysia.
“We work very closely with suppliers from
Italy, changing the menu every two to three
months, normally following the season of
produce.” Patrons are guaranteed the freshest
high end seasonal ingredients so there is
never a chance to get bored. “The only thing
we keep is the pasta with the lobster and the
tiramisu, because they will kill us if we take it
away,” he says, comically mimicking a knife
with his finger drawn across his throat. “Everything
else, we change.”
As I peruse the menu, I ask Chef Federico
how he would describe the cuisine at
Marini’s. “I would say the food here is very
modern. We use molecular applications, and
emphasise very much on the ingredients
and a new way to enjoy it. For example, the
Burrata Cheese. I put it with the lobster. It’s
not conventional, but you’ll see what I mean
when you taste it.”
He continues to point out a few other items
in the menu. “It’s like the Garden Salad, there
are 20 different types of vegetables, 10 dressings,
eight perfumes ... you’ll see for yourself.
I show you a few different dishes,” he says excitedly
and proceeds to rattle on in Italian to
his sous chef, Chef Fabio Ruggiero.
I marvelled at the beauty of the plate of
Maine Lobster and Burrata Salad, drizzled
with extra virgin olive oil and dotted with
baby herbs. The combination was spectacular
– fresh and light with a clean flavour. I
asked Chef Federico where he gets his ideas
for such a beautiful presentation. “You know
“A hot chocolate sauce is poured over the dome,
melting it and exposing the hazelnut mousse within.
Dark, rich and decadent, it was comforting.”
us chefs,” he jokes. “We look at the sky, we see
a cloud, we get inspiration.”
With over 20 dishes on the menu, there is
plenty to choose from without being overwhelming.
Expect unusual dishes like the
grilled cucumber with raw cuttle fish, snails
and squid ink dressing, or more conventional
ones like pan-fried duck liver with cherry,
peach and brioche. “We just love what we are
doing,” he says as the second dish rolls out.
The rustic Venison Carpaccio was simplicity
at its best, presented on a large wooden
tray with bunches of fresh lavender.
Thin, translucent slices of deer meat marinated
in pure sugar cane, served with shavings
of a unique saffron-infused cheese called
‘bagoss’ and droplets of eight-year-old Vincotto.
“The cheese is protected,” he explains,
“and is made in Bagolino, Brescia at the top of
Italy, produced using only milk from brown
cows.” I also learnt that Vincotto is luxurious
vinegar made from cooked grape must.
I dipped my finger in the thick, treacle-like
black liquid and had a taste. The flavour was
intense, aged to the point that bordered on
bittersweet, while remaining immensely
pleasurable to the tastebuds.
“We serve herring in a very unique way,”
continues Chef Federico. “It’s a German style,
with Smoked Cream Bon Bon, Apple Onion
and toasted bread.” Out came the Roasted
Veal Tenderloin, with mashed potato, a
spattering of summer truffle, tomato confit
stuffed with smoked duck, and a buttery Tarragon
Béarnaise. “Now is summer, so we have
the summer truffle with the mash potato and
Béarnaise.” The tenderloin was so tender; it
put up no resistance to my knife and melted
in my mouth, a clear example of fantastic
cooking techniques and excellent meat.
We carried on chatting about fine ingredients
and as talk of seafood ensued, Chef Federico
proudly tells me that Marini’s is the only
restaurant in KL to carry four types of caviar
served every day.
The Pan Roasted Goby was served with an
unusual topping of seared duck liver, a beautiful
saffron-miso sauce on one side, and an
earthy chanterelle sauce on the other. Who
would have thought of combining the delicate,
flaky fish with the velvety foie gras?
For dessert, a giant plate of spun sugar is
placed on your table so you have something
sweet to nibble on. I loved the childlike quality
this brought to the meal, as Chef Federico
shows us we are never too old to enjoy the
simple things in life like candy floss.
You will, in no way, fall asleep to the dessert
aptly named ‘Good Night’, a combination
of chamomile, green tea and honey comb elements.
The sticky marshmallow contrasted
with the crunchy, chewy honeycomb and
bittersweet edible flower and green tea aftertaste
does indeed soothe your palate and lend
calmness to the end of the meal.
The Chocolate Sphere was heavily ornamented,
colourful and exciting to savour. A
hot chocolate sauce is poured over the dome,
melting it and exposing the hazelnut mousse
within. Dark, rich and decadent, it was comforting.
Handmade chocolates are presented
in an elegant black box and you can choose
your own petit fours.
It is clear that Chef Federico is bordering
on being a diabolical genius in the kitchen.
His food is original and inspired. And just like
the fine, slow-aged ingredients used to craft
the masterpieces you are served, each bite
should be savoured in a leisurely pace, taking
in the entirety of the tastes, the flavours, the
atmosphere and the view.
DAO KIA
Original Soy – If you think
Dao Kia’s soya pudding, also
known as tau foo fah, would
be no different than those
sold by street vendors, then
prepare to be enlightened.
Contrary to the conventional
warm soya pudding that is
bathed in either white or
serves theirs chilled with a
creamy, silky smooth texture
that literally melts in your
mouth. It is mildly sweet with
a pleasant aftertaste of organic
soya bean. Incredibly light
and refreshing, this guilt-free,
calcium-rich dessert uses
organic soya beans to achieve
a unique flavour different
from what our taste buds
are used to. We recommend
trying the Original Soy first to
clearly taste how different it is
from other soya treats before
proceeding to the other
wonderful offerings: Japanese
Green Tea, Creamy Almond
delivered to your door
or served everywhere
from casual food courts to
fashionable restaurants,
skewed to local palates and
At Jojo, we can assure you that
you would not come across
adventurous flavours like
pizza for that matter, but
reliable fuss-free originals like
the Beef Pepperoni Pizza. Jojo
stays true to the Italian way of
cooking by making their pizza
thin and large, and packed
with ample amounts of beef
pepperoni slices peeking from
beneath the thick blanket of
cheesy goodness. Fresh herbs
are added to the smooth
textured tomato sauce for a
tangy flavour, while the crust
delivers the perfect chewycrispy
balance that only a
wood-fired oven can deliver.
But the best part about biting
‘cheese strings’ that stretches
THAI GRILL
Pandan Leaf Chicken – The
phrase, “Taste as good as it
looks” truly comes to mind
when presented with this
simple yet exotic dish. A
standard Thai fare, the Pandan
Leaf Chicken is a popular
starter that has tender chunks
of chicken wrapped and deepfried
in pandan leaf so that it
turns out sweet and aromatic.
The importance of the leaf is
that it also retains the juiciness
of the chicken that has been
marinated overnight in a
concoction of spices to ensure
it is fragrant and flavourful
when cooked. To complete
the experience, dip the chicken
into the zesty Thai sauce for
an extra kick and you have
yourself a winner.
during winter. Essentially,
it is a mixture of assorted
seafood and vegetables cooked
in a spicy kimuchi broth —
undeniably, one of the best
ways to combat the cold
weather apart from your usual
spicy hot ramen. This healthy
yet palatable Japanese dish
boasts fresh clams, prawns,
fish slices, carrots, chinese
deliciously chewy mushrooms
— shitake, brown beech and
flavours from the seafood and
vegetables enhances the taste
of the light and spicy kimuchi
Molecular MIXOLOGY
EAST INDIA COCKTAIL
The Tippling Club’s version of
the classic, which consists of a
mix of international liqueurs and
local fruits. Honey pineapples and
fresh raspberries are added to a
strong mix of cognac and Italian
maraschino liqueur, topped with
a Spanish orange liqueur fruity
backbone.
MEXICAN BUBBLE CUP
A take on the bubble tea, using
Mexican flavours and a tequila
base. The drink is infused with
rojak flower using the Sonicprep
Ultrasonic Homogeniser. To
match with the rojak-infused
reposed tequila, two types of
citrus fruits are used, along with
pineapple-infused agave nectar
and bitter Italian aperitif.
DROPJES DAIQUIRI
This drink is a take on the
classic daiquiri, using salted
licorice or ‘drops’ from Holland.
The licorice is infused with
Venezuelan rum, which is then
mixed with orange curaçao
and citrus.
Dining at Singapore’s Tippling Club is a novelty, so is drinking. The Address took four shots
with resident mixologist Zachary Connor de Git – who was also nominated as Australia’s ‘Bartender
of the Year’ by the honorary Australian Bartender Magazine – and came away stoked.
EDITOR’S NOTE
Every issue of The Address is close to our hearts and with each new copy that is
published, we feel compelled to treat it as a special edition. Because that is exactly
what it is to us. It is special.
Gastronomy is the beautiful subject that we have chosen for the September/
October magazine. The word itself sounds similar to the study of stars and otherworldly
concepts which is very often the affect that chefs in every country endeavour
to create: a taste out of this world.
The fascination of food and culture is something that few can resist. Even those
who believe in eating for sustenance can recall the feeling of being enthralled by
food at one stage in their lives or another. Everyone does, it is biological. To deny
it is unnatural.
What is interesting, is the fact that food and its attraction is not simply a question
of taste but also aesthetics, and the subject of aesthetics is a branch of philosophy
behind the appreciation of beauty dating back to the great ancient civilisations.
Appreciating food is a multi-sensory experience often beginning with what we
see. So, with the idea of visual beauty in mind, we had the pleasure of inviting
the top three winners of the Miss Malaysia Tourism beauty pageant to grace the
cover story pages of your magazine. Tropicana invited 18 gorgeous finalists of
the Miss Malaysia Tourism 2013 to an evening reception celebrating the launch
of Tropicana Metropark. In ‘The Game Changer’ segment, we have an interesting
feature on one of the greatest partnerships in fine dining that has proven its
significance beyond the superficial and that partnership is Nobu Matsuhisa and
the great Robert De Niro.
But what was particularly enjoyable during the magazine’s conceptualisation
was the challenge of how to infuse food into our fashion and beauty segments in
a tasteful and meaningful way. As you will discover, the results are remarkable.
There are far too many enjoyable elements for me to describe and as I attempt
to do so, I find myself watering at the mouth. Hence, without further ado I encourage
you to simply get stuck in and have a taste of everything we have to offer.
Creating Moments
WITH MOMENTO
LOT 10 SHOPPING CENTRE
Teeq Restaurant - Friday, 12 July 2013
City dwellers often spend time amongst concrete jungles,
battling traffic and long working hours. For most,
there is little time to enjoy the natural outdoors. Inspired
by this, interior designer, Nathanael Wong
decided to bring nature indoors with his piece titled
‘A Springtime Silhouette’, which won Nippon Paint’s
‘Create Your Moments with Momento’ contest. His
piece symbolises an abstract silhouette of a young
tree that has gone through its first winter. According
to Wong, he chose Nippon Momento Sparkle Silver
Monument MS 146 as the base because it brings out
the natural elements of his art piece, giving it an attractive
and rustic feel. Nippon Paint announced Wong as
the winner on 12 July in a dinner gathering at Teeq
Restaurant, comprising participating interior designers
and industry partners. He walked away with a pair
of tickets to the Salone Internazionate del Milan 2014.
During the prize giving ceremony, Nippon Paint also
launched the Nippon Momento Enhancer Series which
is a special line of semi-transparent Nippon Momento
Special Effect Paint. The key difference is that no
primer is needed. It can be applied immediately as a
glaze over any existing wall colour. The new Nippon
Whose round is it anyway?
AN INTERVIEW BY JACK NEWBERRY
Serial publican Geoff
Siddle is the archetypal
pub landlord behind
Sid’s Pubs in Malaysia.
Pub food has long been
a social corner stone
for many countries,
gradually becoming more
recognised for the honest
approach to hearty meals
that so many of us crave.
This month he serves
up a decent portion of
answers for ‘The Last
Goodbye’.
Where do you live
and why?
“I’ve lived in SS3 Petaling
Jaya for 12 years but as the
traffic got worse along the
LDP highway, I’ve decided
to move closer to work.
Since my outlets and office
are all around this end of
town, we moved to Bangsar
four years ago.”
What does ‘gastronomy’
mean to you?
“To me it means the study
and appreciation of fine
foods and cuisines – luckily
here in Malaysia, with
the massive smorgasbord
of available cuisines,
gastronomy’s a hobby that
never gets boring.”
How do you motivate
yourself every day?
“I look at myself in the
mirror in the morning and
say: ‘Hey you, let’s go and
make some more people
happy today’.”
Are you a good cook?
“I love cooking. I guess
I’m a good cook; at least
that’s what my family
and friends tell me.
Unfortunately, it’s one of
my hobbies that do not get
enough of my time because
I’m constantly busy. If I get
spare time, I cook a lot.”
Where is your favourite
place to eat in Malaysia?
“Tough one, it’ll be a cross
between dim sum at Ming
Room or my friend’s houses
during Raya.”
What is the best
thing about being a pub
landlord?
“Seeing people chatting
and relaxing with a smile on
their faces, it makes all the
hard work worthwhile.”
What would you do as
mayor of KL for the day?
“Mayor Sid? I’d reduce the
alcohol duty to make going
out to pubs and bars more
affordable, I’d award Sid’s
Group fulltime rights to
operate Padang Merbok as
Sid’s RFC and I’d make it
compulsory for ALL civil
servants to cycle to work.”
Do you collect anything?
“Hard Rock Café Hurricane
glasses, cookbooks and
menus (that are usually
nicked more often than not).”
What is the best advice
you have ever been told?
“Be happy with yourself first.”
What is luxury to you?
“Luxury is spending time
with my family.”
What are your plans for
the future?
“No plans yet, just keep
on opening new bars in
different neighbourhoods
so people don’t have to
travel too far from home
for a good night out.”
BOOKS
FEASTS OF PENANG:
MUSLIM CULINARY
HERITAGE
WAZIR JAHAN KARIM
[RM150.00]
This book was written out of
love and passion for Straits
Muslim heritage foods, inspired
by Wazir Jahan Karim’s mother,
Begum Bismillah Munawar, a
well-known philanthropist and
hostess in the 1960s who, amidst
her volunteerism for the poor
and disadvantaged, took much
pride and joy in entertaining
friends and relatives to
gastronomic home dinners. For
fear that many of these recipes
would remain only part of the
nostalgic memories of newer
generations of Straits Muslims,
Wazir Jahan embarked on a
project to document the culinary
heritage of Straits Muslims from
the northwest of Peninsular
Malaysia, mainly Penang.
WINNING FROM WITHIN: A
BREAKTHROUGH METHOD
FOR LEADING, LIVING AND
LASTING CHANGE
ERICA ARIEL FOX
[RM59.90]
Life is a series of negotiations,
whether or not you think of
yourself as a negotiator. From
seemingly insignificant daily
decisions to major life choices, you
negotiate every time you aim to
persuade, argue over a decision,
or resolve a conflict. But as
negotiations and leadership expert
Erica Ariel Fox reveals, the most
important negotiations are those
we have with ourselves. Most of us
recognise the difference between
our knowledge – what we know
we should do and say – and our
knowhow – what we actually do
and say in real life when it counts.
Fox calls this the ‘Performance
Gap’, and she shows you how to
close it, turning breakdowns into
breakthroughs, whether struggling
with a difficult client, arguing
with a combative teenager, or
organising for community action.
BOLEHLAND
MASAO USUI
[RM32.90]
Land. It represents the collective
spirit of ‘can do’ attitude of a
nation, whether of its people
or the governance. It literally
means achieving the impossible.
Or figuratively thinking nothing
is impossible. Either way, the
thought is infectious. This is
about the people in Bolehland.
Citizens who rallied behind the
call of their leaders to strive for
excellence, empowering them
to feel no fear, to never give up
and to know no failure. These
are the people who believe that
equal opportunities exist for
everyone. From the perspective
of one shallow-thinking Japanese
expatriate, who is also a bestselling
humourist, this is a study
of the cumulative effect of 28
million people trying to do the
‘impossible’.
THE EYE OF GOD
JAMES ROLLINS
[RM59.90]
New York Times bestselling
author James Rollins delivers
an apocalyptic vision of a future
predicted by the distant past.
In the wilds of Mongolia, a
research satellite has crashed,
triggering an explosive search for
its valuable cargo: a code-black
physics project connected to
the study of dark energy – and
a shocking image of the eastern
seaboard of the United States
in utter ruin. At the Vatican,
a package arrives containing
two strange artifacts: a skull
scrawled with ancient Aramaic
and a tome bound in human
skin. DNA evidence reveals that
both came from the same body:
the long dead Mongol king
Genghis Khan. Commander
Gray Pierce and Sigma Force set
out to discover a truth tied to the
fall of the Roman Empire, to a
mystery going back to the birth
of Christianity, and to a weapon
hidden for centuries that holds
the fate of humanity.
MUSIC
MODERN VAMPIRES
OF THE CITY
VAMPIRE WEEKEND
Successfully hopping on the
bandwagon of hipster gone
mainstream, Modern Vampires of
the City is Vampire Weekend’s
finest effort to date. Ezra
Koneig’s vocals run high and
low to wonderous effect even
though their blatant use of
distortions would put off many
with a preference for a more
easy listening tone. The comical
chorus on ‘Ya Hey’ does come off
a bit like a Nickelodeon marching
band but instead, Vampire
Weekend manages to pull it off
with true indie hipster panache.
‘Diane Young’ is one of their best
songs to date with its haphazard
rhythms that keeps your feet
tapping and head bopping while
occasionally slowing down to
sing-along friendly verses. This
is most definitely an indie rock
album worth a listen or two, and
then some more.
SIDE EFFECTS OF YOU
FAN TASIA
Side Efects of You sings a new
sound of a well-divined spirit,
something that is unsurprising
for this once struggling single
mother made good. The chosen
first single off the album ‘Lose
to Win’ exudes a sense of
empowerment and newfound
success; strong, confident, yet
fantastically melodic. Another
standout track is ‘Without Me’
that features a star-studded
line-up of Kelly Rowland
and Missy Elliot. With songs
like ‘End Deep’, ‘Lighthouse’
and ‘Supernatural Love’, the
album cuts across important
life-lessons that carry with it
a joyful, inspiring listen. Far
from being a conventional R&B
album, a surprising rock-soul
vibe runs through the tracks,
complementing her amazing
vocal range and powerful
rhythms. Fantasia has come a
long way since American Idol
and her musical maturity can
be heard deeply reflected in her
latest effort.
WAKIN ON A PRETTY DAZE
KURT VILE
The 33-year-old Philadelphian
folk musician has been producing
music and touring for almost 10
years, and in this relatively short
span of time he has managed to
drop his fifth studio album. He
might be an acquired taste to
most old school folk-rockers,
but upon listening to Wakin on
a Pretty Daze, it is obvious that
this artiste carries a unique set of
special qualities. From the first
song ‘Wakin on a Pretty Day’
to the last, it is apparent that far
from being a hazy stroll through
a classic rock road, it builds
up and carries you through
unveiling chapters that comes off
heavier and fuller. It is irony at
its best and folk-rock at its finest.
‘Pure Pain’ is undoubtedly a
highlight, in many ways symbolic
of the sound of the album.
MAGNETIC
TERENCE BLANCHARD
Since the jazz supremo’s
critically-acclaimed 2009 album,
Choices, it seems as though he
has set a note of standards that
would be a difficult reach even
by his own talents. But Terence
Blanchard’s latest studio album
Magnetic has proven that the
New Orleans wunderkid has still
got what it takes. He utilises the
fine talents of tenor saxophonist
Brice Winston, drummer
Kendrick Scott, dazzling pianist
Fabian Almazan, and 21-yearold
rising star bassist Joshua
Crumbly. From the blistering
bop of ‘Don’t Run’ to the fragile
ballad ‘Jacob’s Ladder’; the
psychedelic electronic haze of
‘Hallucinations’ to the urgent
edginess of ‘Another Step’, the
album is a great listen to postbob
fans and new entrants to the
freewheeling world of jazz.
KITCHEN
WORDS SC CHUA
PHOTOGRAPHS POGGENPOHL GERMANY
Over the years, the kitchen has evolved to become the core
of the house, the family. It is no longer just a place to have
your meals; it is also a place to entertain and to gather loved
ones. Gone are the basic kitchens and as replacement,
we are looking at things like islands, strategic spotlights and
lightings, smart refrigerators, beautiful appliances and more
importantly, smartly designed cabinets and kitchen flows to
make this space easy to navigate and purposeful.
There is no such thing as a simple kitchen anymore. In fact,
recent designs have seen the kitchen being integrated into
the living or family room, especially for those with limited
space, where it is in complete full view. Think of it as the
gathering place – where you greet your loved ones early in
the morning with a cup of java and where a day ends with a
delicious dinner for two or more. It is where you entertain
guests with good food, great wine, and even better conversations.
Just pull up a kitchen chair and talk for hours.
40 TA | SEPT/OCT 2013
WITH FOOD PLAYING SUCH AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN FAMILY LIFE, THE KITCHEN HAS BECOME
ESSENTIALLY THE HEART OF THE HOME. SC CHUA TAKES A LOOK AT THIS IMPORTANT SPACE,
AS WELL AS A HISTORICAL KITCHEN BRAND THAT IS LEADING THE WAY FOR ALL.
REFORMED KITCHEN - Nowadays, the kitchen is getting
its own focus. Many brands out there solely emphasise on
kitchen designs, to integrate it with the entire living space
so that it flows effortlessly and allows you to work in it
smoothly. Smart designs ensure that you are able to optimise
your kitchen’s flow and give you ample of space to work
with. In essence, a smart kitchen makes sense.
Enter the 120-year-old German kitchen brand, Poggenpohl.
Established in 1892 by Friedemir Poggenpohl, it is the
first brand to present what is known as the ‘Reform Kitchen’
with interconnecting cabinets and functional interiors. This
reform kitchen consisted of connected units, a separate shoe
cabinet as well as a sink, table and chair. Sounds familiar?
Yes, it is very much like the fitted kitchen of today, which
basically proves the point that the German brand was well
ahead of its time when it created this concept of fitted kitchen
in the 1950s.
It all began with the founder’s philosophy, which was to
“improve the kitchen”. And with that, Poggenpohl has acted
as a pioneer in the world of kitchen, transforming the role of
the kitchen within the home. Aside from creating concepts,
Poggenpohl emphasised the use of cutting-edge materials to
create its extraordinary kitchens. For example, in the early
1930s, the brand created the first 10-layer polished lacquer
technique to create a pristine and luxurious kitchen concept.
In 1960, Poggenpohl launched the first solid-wood kitchen,
an innovative concept at that time, and in 1967, the kitchen
island. It also goes beyond tradition, as seen in its experimental
Luigi Colani round kitchen in 1970 (a kitchen that is
based on a circular space).
The innovation that is leading this kitchen brand at the
moment is that is boast the largest choice of colours and materials
you will ever come across, whether to give your kitchen
a warm and classy look or a modern finishing. Think
colours such as ‘blossom white’, ‘pebble grey’, ‘terra’, ‘sand’
and more.
With precision and passion as the basis of its kitchen designs,
Poggenpohl has done more than just improved the kitchen;
it has created a brand new space in our homes and lives
with its concepts. One that we will gladly spend all our time
in, if it is the Poggenpohl kitchen.➢
Poggenpohl Kitchen?
Here are some iconic designs.
+ ARTESIO - It is Poggenpohl’s open by still connected kitchen
concept created in collaboration with architect Hadi
Teherani. This design began with the vision to create a continuous
kitchen and living experience, and reinvents kitchen
living through breaking the frontiers between the cooking
and living area. A new space is created, as unity is achieved
through an architectural arch and wall system.
+ MODO - Want your kitchen to look tidy? Enter Poggenpohl’s
+MODO, which play on the concept of closed and open
elements. Place your favourite and most used objects in open
spaces, and hide the rest in cleverly designed concealed spaces.
It is neat and best of all, visually arresting. Definitely a
space to enjoy.
+ SEGMENTO - Do not let your eyes fool you. This simple yet
exquisite design hides decades of thought and experience –
thin worktops, handle-less surfaces, and a purity of lines for
a visual experience.
+ EDITION - Some ideas transcend through time. And Poggenpohl’s
+Edition is one of them. The timeless framed door
designs are the international reference point for quality while
the concept speaks of elegance, quality, performance, and a
style that lasts. Think of it as a timeless kitchen that will take
you through the past, present and future.
+ PORSCHE DESIGN P7340 - Designed in collaboration with
Porsche Design, this elegant kitchen design focuses not just
on aesthetics, but also on fundamental engineering. It features
a clear and linear design, inspired by the automobile
and goes further with the inspiration with functions, craftsmanship
and technology. Definitely for those who appreciate
performance, precision and design.
TROPICANA METROPARK – AN ICONIC LANDMARK IN SUBANG JAYA
TROPICANA CORPORATION’S PLANS FOR A PROSPEROUS FUTURE
Prestigious. Award-winning. Quality. Innovative. High capital appreciation. These are just some of the
signatures of the property projects undertaken by Tropicana Corporation Berhad. The following pages
showcase some novel and stunning residential and commercial developments as further testament to the
organisation’s flair in this industry. Tropicana Corporation hopes to create a more compassionate and
Corporation continues to deliver on its responsibility to give back to society by supporting various charitable
causes and participating in celebrations and community events.
A Slice of Metropolis Heaven
TROPICANA METROPARK: THE FUTURE
OF URBAN LIVING
The growing community of affluent families and individuals
in KL has notibly increased over the years along with the
need for new luxury homes that meet the requirements of
this demanding segment of the market. As a result, the official
launch of Tropicana Metropark on 31 May 2013 was a highly
anticipated event, as the project is considered amongst one of
Tropicana Corporation’s well-planned integrated mixed development
projects in the Klang Valley, touted to bring much
growth to the Subang and Shah Alam established townships
and its affluent neighbourhoods.
Covering 88 acres with a gross floor area of approximately
11 million square feet, this project with an estimated gross
development value of RM6.3 billion is fully integrated, offering
a good mix of residential, office space, retail, hotel, entertainment
hubs, as well as learning and medical centres. Res-
idents have the advantage of the nine-acre green oasis called
the ‘Central Park’ in the heart of Tropicana Metropark, which
can be fully utilised for sporting or leisure activities such as
jogging, cycling, morning exercises or even a picnic. In addition,
the presence of an F&B strip offers plenty of choices for
alfresco indulgence.
Taking potential home owners every need and desire into
consideration was an integral element in the conceptulisation
of Tropicana Metropark – which will see its final completion
in 2025. Easily accessed from the Federal Highway
via a RM150 million flyover, which will be constructed by
Tropicana Corporation Berhad in 2014 and expected to be
completed by 2016, the project has atttracted more than its
fair share of attention for its urban solutions perspective on
modern living.
He further added, “Tropicana Metropark marks yet another
Klang Valley.” The groundbreaking ceremony of Tropicana
Metropark was officiated by Subang Jaya Municipal Council
Tropicana Corporation further demonstrated its continuous
strive for excellence with the launch of the Pandora Serviced
value of RM360 million. The upscale development’s two
invited the 18 finalists of the Miss Malaysia Tourism
2013 to grace the evening reception celebrating the launch
of Tropicana Metropark in Subang Jaya. The move further
boosted the popularity of the event, resulting in an overwhelming
Two contestants took home the subsidiary titles of ‘Best in
Talent’ and ‘Miss Tropicana Lifestyle’ – Polin Teo (contestant
number 12) for her contemporary dance piece, and Amanda
Lee (contestant number five) for her winning showmanship.
The evening reception proved opportune for the Group, as
it was held right after the Group’s announcement of its corporate
name change – from Dijaya Corporation Berhad to
Tropicana Corporation Berhad. It also coincided with Tropicana
Metropark’s big win at the Asia Pacific Property Awards
2013 for its highest five-star rating win for ‘Best Mixed-Use
Development’.
ENHANCED SECURITY – One of the most imporatant elements
to modern living is a sense of security, a subject that
many Tropicana property owners are familiar with and one
of the great priorities for the Tropicana Group. In order to
amplify the current security measures, auxiliary police officers
are being used to reduce crime. Since 2010, Tropicana
has employed additional security personel to reinforce the
residence of Tropicana Golf & Country Resort.
This important decision was agreed between residence and
the resort management after a number of break-ins prompted
serious discusions on the issue. “The main objective of the
auxiliary police unit is to upgrade and enhance security in the
area,” said Tropicana Golf & Country Resort Senior Security
Manager Ismail Saleh. The resort itself is home to a number of
high profile individuals and affluent families and so the need
for these measures has become vitally important. Former
Dijaya Corporation Berhad Chief Executive Officer Tan Sri
Dato’ Danny Tan felt that it was imperative that the Group
needed to do their best to ensure the safety of the residents.
48 TA | SEPT/OCT 2013
— Tropicana Metropark’s modern alfresco area
“The auxiliary police unit is similar to regular police but cannot
issue summonses. Their power to arrest is limited within
the company’s property. After making an arrest, the auxiliary
police unit will bring the suspect to the nearest police station,”
said Ismail. Ismail added that security guards sometimes
faced challenges in getting visitors to provide identification
details prior to entering the premises.
The introduction of the security personel provides another
wall of defence against intruders. Whether it be the visibility
of armed guards or the requirement of identification, the
criminal element will find it increasily difficult to sieze an
opportunity. Each auxiliary police officer undergoes a threemonth
training programme of self-defence and arms training.
They also learn about the basic relevant laws and how it ➢
← applies to their duties and job functions. Ismail said residents
were prepared to pay extra for additional security. “So
far, response has been good. Residents have been supportive.
We faced no objections to the proposal to raise maintenance
fees to pay for the auxiliary police unit,” said Ismail. Retiree
Muhammad Nordin A. Bakar, 82, who has been living in the
area for six years, said security had improved. “There were
several burglaries in the neighbourhood a few years back.
Now, security seems to be much better”.
MOMENTUM – Having the vision to create an incredible project
is only part of the challenge. Without strength, expertise
and determination to realise the dream, one is left with exactly
that...a dream. Tropicana continues to demonstrate their
ability to maintain impressive progress in order to achieve
their ultimate goals.
Bayberry Residences in Kota Damansara, Selangor – Phase
Two of Tropicana Gardens was swiftly snapped up in a twoday
special preview organised on 9 and 10 March 2013 at
Tropicana Gardens Sales Gallery. Tropicana Privilege Card
members were treated to an evening of good food, lively
jazz band music, dance performances and a firework displays
during the sneak preview on the first day. The second day
of the preview saw an overwhelming turnout of 2,000 applicants
who queued as early as 5.00 am to be the first in line
to secure their choice units and take advantage of the early
bird rebates for standard units. What was quite impressive
was that the two-day preview witnessed an impressive 80%
take-up rate.
Tropicana Heights in Kajang is set to become the next premium
mixed development in the area, with its attractive combination
of landed residences, condominiums and commercial
precinct. The 198.5-acre development is now open for registration
and will be launched soon, while its master plan is
being developed and finalised.
In Penang, Phase 1A of Penang WorldCity, which is known as
Tropicana Bay Residences, was recently opened to the public
for bookings, to which it received a strong positive response
from investors and home seekers, many of whom were queuing
up as early as 7.00 am. Building plans for this residential
project are currently under development and not far from being
finalised.
As for the progress at Tropez Residences in Johor, the first
phase of Tropicana Danga Bay which is strategically located
within the Iskandar Malaysia region, was launched in December
2011. The residential development’s recent achievements
include a 100% take-up rate of its Block A, B and C, thanks to
local and foreign investors from Indonesia, Singapore, China,
on the success of Tropez Residences, Capri Residences – the
second phase of the development – is also expected to attract
strong interest and achieve even better results from its property
sales.
Oasis, the first phase of the Tropicana Danga Cove commercial
development, has been launched. It will consist of
three- to four-storey shop offices, divided into 112 units, and
built in a modern, contemporary style on a 39-acre freehold
land. At present, the overall progress of earthwork and piling
works are 100% complete and all plans are moving in the
right direction.
SABAH – Tropicana Landmark, a stunning high-rise residential
development in Kota Kinabalu, received positive responses
and keen interest from home buyers during its road show
at the 1 Borneo Hypermall/City Mall in June 2013, with a total
take-up rate of 50%. This residential development project
with a GDV of RM101 million is poised to elevate the urban
township of Bundusan, as it offers a fusion of eco-contemporary
architecture and custom-designed resort-style elements
of luxury with beautifully crafted stone walls, tranquil water
Commenting on the development, Dato’ Dickson Tan,
Group Managing Director of Tropicana said, “Sabah is one
of the key growth corridors in the country. Kota Kinabalu,
of particular note, has been experiencing a hive of building
activities. Tropicana Landmark is our first venture into East
Malaysia, thus catapulting the Tropicana brand beyond Peninsular
concepts and expand our horizons, thus reinforcing our position
as a game-changer in the industry.”
Plans for a Prosperous Future
GOING FORWARD: THE POWER OF BELIEF
TROPICANA CORPORATION’ S IMMEDIATE VISION AND
MISSION – Tropicana Corporation Berhad’s current goal is
to solidify the Group’s positioning as a leading property developer
in Malaysia. In order to do so, it requires a solid platform
to sustain a strong growth in sales – this is achieved
with the presence of a strong pipeline of future projects,
strategically gleaned from more than 2,000 acres of prime development
landbank with a potential future GDV of RM70
billion. Having spread its wings to Greater KL, Iskandar Malaysia
and Penang, the Group possesses a strong presence in
these growth regions. “This future GDV of RM70 billion is
spread out across these three regions with Greater KL accounting
for 49% of future GDV, Iskandar Malaysia 36% and
the remainder up north on Penang Island,” says Dato’ Yau
Kok Seng, Group Chief Executive Officer of Tropicana. He
further added, “Based on our current plans, we are focusing
equally on commercial and residential properties.”
In the Group’s Fiscal Year 2013 (FY13), Tropicana Corporation
plans to target new sales of RM2.0 billion, and to anticipate
new property launches worth RM3.0 billion. Sales of
ongoing as well as completed inventories worth RM800 million
are expected to accelerate in this period. Steady contribution
from property investments and enhanced earnings with
land trading activities will put the Group in a stronger and
more secure position. At present, the Group has chalked up
1Q FY13 new sales of RM254 million, with new sales to-date
having risen to RM420 million. With sustainable earnings
growth prospects which consist of unbilled sales of around
RM1.1 billion as at March 2013, Tropicana Corporation
plans to further strengthen its balance sheet via asset monetisation
and a pro-active degearing exercise which is expected
to achieve a net gearing of 0.65x by end FY13 and 0.5x by end
Fiscal Year 2014 (FY14).
Corporation Berhad can only go forward and more confident
in its vision and mission to become one of Malaysia’s leading
property players. Tropicana Corporation’s development
plan for this year and the near future is to have a sustainable
market driven approach, where their development plans are
concerned, with a target to achieve about 20% to 25% compound
annual growth rate (CAGR) in launches over the next
three to five years. Planned launches for the current year are
estimated at RM3.0 billion.
ANOTHER WIN FOR TROPICANA – Adding another feather
to its cap, Tropicana Corporation Berhad took home the BCI
Asia Top 10 Developers Award 2013 for its role as a key industry
player in the property industry and its numerous social
and environmental contributions.
The BCI Asia Awards is a regional event attended by the industry’s
top architects and building professionals in Hong
Kong SAR, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore,
Thailand and Vietnam. This event provides an overview of
the regional building and construction industry by recognising
the top architectural firms and developers that had the
greatest impact on the built environment in Southeast Asia. ➢
Tropicana’s success is mostly due to its dynamic and experienced
management team that is able to deliver growth strategies
and capital management initiatives. Despite the changes
at the top management level, Dato’ Yau Kok Seng said,
“Firstly, I must acknowledge that I am very fortunate to have
inherited a very good team. What I needed was to further
strengthen the team in order for us to execute the corporate
strategy that we have now formulated. I have reviewed the
organisation chart, identified the competency gaps and all the
key positions have substantially been filled. Proper succession
is also in place, and the Group will continue to focus on the
importance in maintaining our talent pool through talent
management and embarking on learning and development
programme.”
Coupled with its strongest asset and a signature of the Group
– the Tropicana brand name – which has long been recognised
for quality, innovation and visionary outlook, Tropicana
← TRUE VALUE REALISED – In line with Tropicana Corporation
Berhad’s strategy to unlock landbank value and degear
its balance sheet, the property developer has decided to
dispose of two adjacent parcels of leasehold land – located in
Tropicana Golf & Country Resort – to Mayfair Ventures Sdn
Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mulpha Land Berhad for
RM116.1 million.
Dato’ Yau Kok Seng, Group Chief Executive Officer of Tropicana
lauded the move, saying that the sale of the land at approximately
RM416 per square foot “is a fair level for us to crystallise
the value of these land parcels.” He further added, “This
disposal will not only result in an immediate and significant
enhancement to our current year earnings, but the cash raised
will further strengthen our delivery platform and position us to
sustain our growth over the medium to longer term.”
With a targeted completion in the fourth quarter of 2013, the
Group is expected to profit from a net gain of RM87 million,
which will translate into a 9.1 sen boost to Tropicana Corporation’s
net earnings per share for the financial year ending
31 December 2013. This figure is based on the Group’s current
share capital base of RM949.4 million ordinary shares of
RM1 each.
Sealing the deal — From left: Dato’ Andy Khoo Poh Chye, Executive Director of
Tropicana; Dato’ Yau Kok Seng, Group CEO of Tropicana; Ronn Yong, Deputy CEO,
Property of Mulpha International Berhad and Ghazie Yeoh Abdullah, Executive
Director of Mulpha Land Berhad
At present, the Group is focusing on high-GDV and scalable
key development projects in Greater KL, Iskandar Malaysia
and Penang Island, with new launches of RM3.0 billion expected
to take place soon in these locations. Dato’ Yau added,
“As we embark on this exciting growth phase, we are also
constantly assessing capital management initiatives, including
land sales, to ensure that the Group’s resources are employed
in the most efficient and effective manner. This will
improve the Group’s returns and profitability, and ultimately
create more value for our shareholders.”
EDITOR JACK NEWBERRY HAD THE RARE PLEASURE OF SITTING DOWN WITH NOT ONE, BUT THREE
TALENTED MALAYSIAN BEAUTIES WHO RECENTLY WON THE TOP POSITIONS AT THE MISS MALAYSIA
TOURISM 2013 HOSTED BY TROPICANA CORPORATION BERHAD.
First prize winner Thaarah Ganesan (TG), first runner
up Jennifer Ling Su Ping (JL) and second runner up Renee
Tan Joe (RT) share their experiences of this excellent
event.
Firstly Jennifer, congratulations. How does it feel to
represent Malaysia?
JL: “I feel really proud to represent Malaysia and it was really
unexpected for me to be in the top three. It was a nervewrecking
experience because we had to rehearse the show in
just two or three days for the finale. There was a dance and
song routine that we needed to memorise as well as the
choreography for the catwalk.”
From top to bottom — The ladies spending some leisure time at Tropicana
Tropicana; Jun Yong Wan, Miss Malaysia Tourism 2012 and Datuk Danny Ooi,
President of Miss Malaysia Tourism Pageant
That is quite a lot to take on.
JL: “Yes, I try my best to promote Malaysia to other countries
and I want to take part in more charitable events in the future.”
Have you been a model for a long time?
JL: “Actually, I’ve been working as a model prior to this competition.
However, a beauty pageant is totally different to modelling
because so much of modelling is about catwalks. To succeed in
beauty pageants, you need to have the whole package. You need
to have a talent; you need to speak with the audience, you also
need to be aggressive. It’s quite hard to make the change, especially
when you are shy. People tell me to be more aggressive and
to smile more and talk more, so I tried my best.” ➢
SEPT/OCT 2013 | TA 61
“It was very overwhelming at first; I needed to digest the whole experience.
But after that, I kind of got used to it.”
← I think “aggressive” is the wrong word. I believe it is a
question of being more confident. There is a difference.
JL: “Well, in modelling it is about your looks but pageants are
a lot to do with what you say.”
What do you want to do next?
JL: “First of all, I want to just chill out! Then, I will focus on
completing my studies.”
What are you studying?
JL: “I am studying business.”
Do you want to be a business woman when you graduate?
JL: “I believe business is useful for every career and that’s
why I chose to study this subject. It is useful for almost everything
in life.”
A business mind and killer looks.
JL: “Yes, exactly!”
Thaarah, you are the winner for 2013. Big congratulations
to you! How does it feel?
TG: “It’s actually exciting! It was very overwhelming at first;
I needed to digest the whole experience. But after that, I kind
of got used to it.”
Did you know you were going to win?
TG: “No, definitely not. I was mentally prepared for the
whole thing, but I didn’t want to get my hopes up too high. I
was really surprised and it was great because my whole family
was there.”
How do you think this pageant will help with your career
advancement?
TG: “I think that it will definitely help because I have always
wanted to do more charity work and after winning this title,
I feel that I can do more.”
How does it feel representing Malaysia and what words
of advice do you have for aspiring models?
TG: “It is a bit daunting because I do not want to disappoint
anyone. But I will definitely try my best. Although it sounds
typical to say ‘be you’, I think that it is really important to do
just that and be yourself. It’s very easy to get caught up in
everything that you’re doing, but I personally think it is important
to stick to your principles and what you believe in.”
Was the preparation difficult?
TG: “No, not really. It was tiring being out the whole day rehearsing,
but not difficult.”
Do you think that beauty comes from within?
TG: “Yes, I do and I know this because when you meet someone
who is beautiful but their character is ugly, it shows.”
What would you be if your were not a model?
TG: “I would continue my studies in medical science as I am
currently studying to be a doctor. After I finish my five years
as a General Practitioner, I want to move into pediatrics.”
Excellent. I wish you the best of luck.
Finally Renee, you were the second runner up. Congratulations
and well done. You are at the beginning of
what I imagine is a glamorous journey, but I am interested
in finding out what you will do after all this?
RT: “I’m studying banking and finance, so I will either work
in a large company or a bank.”
Will you look to join more competitions and pageants
before graduating?
RT: “Yes, definitely because there is an age limit with pageants
which is 25. I’m 22, so I want to compete as much as
possible and get as much experience as possible.”
What does it feel like for you to represent Malaysia?
RT: “I would say to represent my hometown of Melaka is
great because back home, there are not too many people joining
pageants and in my family, I have many siblings. I am the
only one who is active in modelling so I get a lot of support
from my mum and dad.”
What about the rest of your siblings, what do they do?
RT: “They are all working, but none of them are modelling.”
Have you got sisters or brothers?
RT: “Both are sisters.”
So you are the lucky one?
RT: “The tall one you mean!”
What have you learned from this experience?
RT: “Well, what has been great for me is learning public
speaking. Initially, I was quite shy and I found it quite hard
to speak in public. However, this gave me the confidence
through practice.”
This is definitely a true statement. The most successful
professionals in the world often have one thing in common
and that is they have all practiced for tens of thousands
of hours to be perfect. So good luck Renee, and I
hope you achieve your goals in life.
RT: “Thanks Jack!”
If sipping elegant wines, visiting benchmark vineyards, dining
on the most sumptuous gourmet delights in elegant restaurants
and relaxing in grand and private retreats sounds
tempting, then Bordeaux in southwest France is the place to
holiday. Enjoy one luxurious week of discovering the world’s
premiere wine region in absolute luxury with the people who
know Bordeaux best, Quintessentially Travel.
In addition to Bordeaux, France is also home to other great
wine producing regions such as Burgundy, Beaujolais, the
Rhône Valley and Champagne and visits to these destinations
can also be arranged.
MADE FOR WINES - It is hard for any wine expert to talk
about French wines without weaving ‘terroir’ into the conversation,
and like many foreign words, there is not one word
in English that sums up ‘terroir’. Without it though, French
wines (or any others, for that matter) would not be what
they are. Wines are like many other products, in that they
are made in a variety of ways and in many parts of the world.
Like a chemical formula, if one of the ingredients is altered,
the finished product changes. So terroir is the sum total of all
the natural ingredients that contribute to coming together, to
produce what is presented as wine in the bottle – the climate,
the aspect, the slope, the soil, the geology and the grape varieties
used are all vital ingredients.
No two wine producing areas are the same, so Merlot
grapes grown in Bordeaux produce a slightly different wine
to those harvested in say, Margaret River, Western Australia.
Of course, this is the great appeal of appreciating wines, in
that every bottle of wine opened is different to every other
bottle. It is possible to admire the same varieties grown in different
parts of the world and also appreciate the influence the
winemaker has in producing different wines from the same
varieties. Most Bordeaux winemakers would argue that they
are merely ‘custodians’ of the terroir, and that nature makes
the greatest contribution to the finished product.
Terroir is such an essential ingredient in premium French
wines that wine labels make reference to location, more so
than grape variety. While this frustrates most New World
wine connoisseurs, the French happily enjoy their wines
based on knowing the location as well as the grape variety.
The finest wines are generally labelled according to the specific
vineyard, and understanding French wines can be as
much a lesson in geography as oenology. ➢
FOOD FRIENDLY WINES - While some 75% of Bordeaux’s
wines are red, they are very food-friendly and this ensures
their universal appeal. These wines cover all spectrums of
the dining experience with some of the world’s finest dessert
wines being grown in the region. Luscious sweet wines from
wines (or to be accompanied by foie gras) are measured with
arguably the finest wine of all being Château d’Yquem.
While best known for its wines, Bordeaux is no slouch in
the gastronomic stakes. Being located close to the Atlantic
coastline, seafood is bountiful but like many other regions in
France, diversity is all important. Lobsters, mussels, oysters
and fish are important on some menus with mussel soup being
a specialty. Beef ribs sourced from the region’s Charolais
beef also feature on many menus.
that manages to bring everything together for a memorable
wine list, but whatever it is, it is a fitting way to
end an unforgettable evening before retiring to the luxury of
the Regent Grand Hotel in central Bordeaux.
TO BUILD AN EMPIRE.
One common trait that all great chefs have in common is a
love for quality, unadulterated food. This is particularly true
of traditional Japanese cuisine which eschews unnecessary
embellishment. Although Japan’s most famous culinary export,
sushi, has been reinvented in numerous ways over the
years, a deep respect for this classic means that it is always
enhanced, never overshadowed.
For Chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa – better known as just Chef
Nobu – being a sushi chef is the culmination of a lifelong dream.
As a boy, his first visit to a sushi restaurant – an exclusive and
expensive treat at the time – was so memorable that he decided
then and there that he would one day be a sushi chef.
Despite being classically-trained, Chef Nobu has nonetheless
brought something new to the way diners experience this
quintessential dish. As for the vast empire which now bears
his name, it was borne out of largely unanticipated and sometimes
painful experiences, which makes his current successes
all the sweeter.
T H E E A R L Y Y E A R S — A native of Saitama, Japan, Chef Nobu
worked his way up from an apprenticeship in Tokyo, where
he spent his first three years washing and cleaning, then helping
with the marketing and cleaning the fish. Only in his
fourth year was he allowed to prepare sushi and promoted
to chef status, but he is thankful for the early experience as a
dishwasher and busboy which made him tougher and more
able to empathise with his workers.
After seven years, Chef Nobu opened his own sushi bar in
an unlikely place: Peru. At only 24 years of age, he uprooted
and spent three years in Lima, where the on-going challenge
of using regional ingredients and introducing Peruvian influences
led to the gradual development of his trademark ‘Nobu
Style’. At the time, there were few Japanese restaurants in
town, yet the presence of many large Japanese corporations
meant a steady stream of fellow countrymen looking for good
sushi. Although the restaurant was successful, irreconcilable
differences between Chef Nobu and the restaurant co-owners
prompted him to leave for a short stint in Argentina before
returning to Japan.
However, his wanderlust could not be quelled and before
long he moved on to another venture in Alaska. Tragically,
his intense personal and monetary investments literally went
up in smoke when the weeks-old restaurant burned down.
Heartbroken and heavily in debt, Chef Nobu hit a low
point. Returning to Japan, he had no work and, it appeared,
no prospect of ever rebuilding his dream. Depression and
even the thought of ending his life was only held at bay by the
thought that his wife and daughters needed him – as he said
in one interview, “If not for myself, I had to do it for them.”
With this in mind, he hopped on a plane to California where
a friend offered him a position in his family-run sushi restaurant
and started on the long journey back to solvency. During
this time, he received his green card and moved on to another
position which allowed him to slowly rebuild his savings.
All in all, after nine long years, a friend’s loan enabled him
to open his own Matsuhisa restaurant in Beverly Hills, Los
Angeles in 1987. With his wife as his business partner, the
first years were tough – his artistic vision meant buying only
the best fish, which kept food costs high. Barely making any
profit, they could just about make ends meet but he was happy
as long as his customers enjoyed his food.
Thankfully, despite the difficulties, word soon spread about
the affordably-priced food, great quality and service, bringing
more customers and media attention.
This LA venture marked a change in Chef Nobu’s fortune
– it was in LA that he first met actor Robert De Niro, who
became both a good friend and business partner. It was De
Niro who encouraged Chef Nobu to open his first self-named
Nobu restaurant in New York with the help of restaurateur
Drew Nieporent. It was 1994, and a steady string of openings
followed over the course of the next two decades.
During this time, he gathered accolades from the likes of
Los Angeles Times Magazine as one of “America’s 10 Best New
Chefs”, the Zagat Survey as “the man who may be the best
Japanese chef in the world” and the New York Times as one of
the “Top 10 restaurant destinations of the world”.
T H E N O B U P H I L O S O P H Y — On the surface, it would seem
that gathering accolades is a favourite pastime of Chef Nobu,
but despite his successes, this Michelin-starred chef remains
humble and very much in touch with his first love – sushi.
Cooking is something Chef Nobu takes very personally, as
he feels that food is “imbued with the feelings and personality
of the cook,” explaining that even the most faithful recreation
of his recipes will never result in a perfect replica of his food.
In essence, it is about putting one’s own heart – or kokoro –
into one’s cooking, which is exactly what he does.
L O O K I N G AHEAD — To-date, Chef Nobu has 25 restaurants
in 21 different cities, with the most recent in Cape Town,
Moscow and Mexico City. His latest venture has brought him
full circle, working together with long-time friend Robert De
Niro to open the first-ever Nobu Hotel, located in Ceasars
Palace, Las Vegas.
Its premium location on the Strip guarantees this 180-room
hotel something none of its neighbouring hotels can match
– a (relatively) cosy boutique environment. Furthermore, in
keeping with his cultural roots, the interior decor features
Japanese themes such as custom-made lanterns inspired by
origami. But since it is Vegas, where ‘over-the-top’ is the order
of the day, the hotel is also extraordinarily luxurious and
features a generously-sized new Nobu restaurant which occupies
all of 11,000 square feet, complete with private dining areas
and a 327-seat lounge and bar serving Nobu-branded sake.
This incredible feat is only matched by yet another Nobu
hotel on the other side of the world, in Riyadh where it bears
the honour of being the first boutique hotel in the Kingdom
of Saudi Arabia. Opulent yet breathtakingly elegant, the Nobu
stamp of excellence will soon also welcome visitors to London
and Bahrain, where two new Nobu hotels are planned.
With such a massive empire, it is hard to imagine what
is next for this inspiring individual. As he and his string of
restaurants and hotels continue to attract glowing reviews
from critics, customers and celebrities alike, fans can rest assured
that he will not disappoint.
— Czech Krumlov architecture; View of Prague’s Old Town Square by night
As its most popularly visited attraction, the castle (570 metres
long, on average 128 metres wide covering an area of
7.28 hectares) was constructed back then by Prince Boøivoj,
but has been added to and transformed over the centuries.
Today, its imposing form has gone through four major reconstructions
but it kept to the classical facelift that was effected
during the reign of Maria Theresa in the 18th century.
That the city sounds big is only imagined. Prague is barely
496 kilometre square with a population of 1.2 million bustling
around, mostly in its very efficient metro and subway system.
Nevertheless, there is much to see and do in the beautiful city.
Unless you live in Europe, Prague and pretty much the rest
of Czech Republic is not your regular vacation spot. And
that is the wonderful thing about it. Caught in the middle of
en-masse commercialism and old-world charm, the hitherto
communist country previously named Czechoslovakia (now
democratic Czech and The Slovak Republic), presents a myriad
of activities and attractions for the tourist.
One of which is the Prague Castle, which had been the seat
of power for all past Czech monarchs dating back to 850 AD.
Today, the landmark that is the world’s largest existing castle
complex can be distinctly seen from all of Prague – the centre
of political and commercial activities for the last millennium
and now tourism as well.
G O L F I N P R A G U E – Golf here is primarily dictated by two
fine establishments, the Golf Resort Konopiste and Golf Resort
Karlstjen.
Konopiste opened in 2002 with two courses to suit every
need. The first is its championship course, Radecky, which
is a par 72, 7,091-yard, 18-hole parkland layout defined by
beautiful flora and steep slopes.
It is a fine test of golf for strong hitters but also serves to
put higher handicap players at ease with various options
off the tee. Its fairways are undulating and in certain areas,
are bordered by thick, lush forest with large greens that are
well-manicured and true.
The other course, the D’Este is less trying but nevertheless,
a fun round of 18 holes at 6,086 yards. The main reason why
this is a walk-in-the-park is due to the fact that when it was
built in 2005, 70,000 saplings were planted throughout the
course, and many of which are still very young and gentle.
Golf Resort Karlstjen, on the other hand, has held The
Czech Open and is well-regarded as one of the best tracts in
Central Europe. Opened in 1993, it is spectacularly set against
the ancient fortress of Emperor Charles IV (circa 1348). Hilly
with water hazards sprinkled all over, Canadian architect Les
Furber made a point to use the natural surrounds to the benefit
of the beauty and yet, bring out a testing resolve in this relatively
short 6,480-yard, par 72 course. The broken terrain,
natural gorges, two lakes and many sand traps create a visual
challenge for players seeking to get risky here.
Combined with Karlstjen castle, the hills, limestone outcrops
and rich flora and fauna makes this a perfect visit just
minutes from the city. ➢
← I N T E R E S T I N G L A N D M A R K S – There are actually three distinct
areas in the city. They are simply named, Lesser Town,
Old Town and New Town.
Sited down the slopes of Nerudova street joining Prague Castle
is an old town that dates back as far as 1257. The Prague
Lesser Town, also known as ‘Small Quarter’ or ‘Mala Strana’,
remained the least affected throughout the two world wars and
political change of climate. In effect, there are a good number of
grand Baroque buildings such as the Thun-Hohenstain, Morzin
palaces and the Church of Our Lady of Unceasing Succour.
Houses along the narrow Nerudova also tended to contain emblems
of mythical beasts representing coat-of-arms.
Around Lesser Town are a lively array of important buildings
such as the Senate of the Czech Republic and Town Hall,
as well as numerous restaurants and bars. It also connects to
the Old Town, which is the oldest here dating back to 1091,
via Charles Bridge, which itself had carried men and beasts
alike for over 600 years. Today, it is an important monument
and allows only pedestrian traffic over the two towns.
The New Town is not actually very new. Dating back to the
14th century, it was originally inhabited by trades and crafts
people, and the centre of commercial activity. During the
19th century, it went through a massive facade change that
held up to its present-day modern look. Nevertheless, there is
much to do and enjoy here with the State Opera hosting the
seasonal Verdi Festival and attracting various famous names
such as Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, Felix Mottl, Arthur
Nikisch and Felix Weingartner.
Other attractions within New Town include Charles Square,
named after Charles IV, which had been a cattle market and
is today, one of the largest squares in Europe. Containing the
Baroque Cathedral of St. Ignatius and the Emmaus Monastery,
its multitude of frescoes and statues of important historical
figures are truly a magnificent sight.
The National Theatre is also worth visiting. Privately funded,
the Neo-Renaissance structure was opened in 1881 with a
performance Libuše by Bedřich Smetana. Unfortunately, the
theatre was burned down two months later, only to be restored
two years later. Till this day, ballet and opera is still a
staple within its halls.
R E S T A U R A N T S AND BARS – The nightlife here is constantly
brimming with activities, and top-notch gourmet restaurants
are aplenty. An obvious bonus is that although part of the European
Union, Prague, like London and the rest of the UK still
relies on its own currency.
Unlike the English however, the koruna goes for 20:1 ratio
against the US dollar, which in loose terms translates to a
much lower cost of living here than anywhere else in western
Europe. Nevertheless, the quality of food and service is top
class, with ambience, a highly interesting set-up in some of
the restaurants.
A lot of traditional Prague cuisine had largely been dictated
by a time when the people were less economically well off.
The staple food used to be a slaughtered cow, with every part
minced together and packed inside the intestines, which are
then frozen in freezers. This raw minced beef is boiled and
then served like sausages and could feed a family for months.
Today, they are still commonly eaten and tastes good with
sauces and beer. The latter would prove to be a national favourite;
the Czechs love their beer and the excellent Pilsner
Urquell can challenge the best of German beers.
Around the Prague Castle, there is a certain offbeat restaurant
that, upon first hearing its name, seems like a misfit of
sorts. Cowboys is one of the latest addition to the scene, set
right at the top of Nerudova Street. A steak house more than
anything else, its interior is set within a deep set cellar with
large mirrors and vaulted walls.
For something more impressive, the Hradčany at Hotel Savoy
jacks it up there with the classiest. Bask in the warmth of
1930s ballroom splendor and keep a look out for Greta Garbo
and Cary Grant; this distinctive hotel-cum-restaurant serves
up Michelin standard fare at less than haute cuisine, well, fare
(pun certainly intended).
A stroll downhill across Charles Bridge is the older sister
of Cowboys restaurant called Kampa Park. A trendy and ‘be
seen’ place for dining, Kampa Park offers the most stunning
view of the bridge and the river at night.
Further inland to Old Town, U Modré Růže, or ‘The Blue
Rose’, is an absolutely romantic setting that is a 15th century
cellar between Starmetska and Venceslas square. The coatof-arms
transfixed on the walls of its narrow dining area provides
a mystical, medieval opulence.
Another similarly unique restaurant can be found in the
New Town that is set in the basement that is designed in the
likeness of a stalactite cave depicting Pluto’s underworld. Apart
from its kooky shell, the dining experience is very comfortable
and posh, serving up a mix of traditional European cuisine, as
well as the personal creations of resident chef Michal Novak.
Visit the local La Casa del Habano cigar bar for a post-dinner
cognac and top quality Cuban smokes. The franchise is
world renowned for its collection of fine cigars and is the
most exclusive cigar bar here in the Czech Republic.
There are also bars and clubs to while the night away. Like
most European cities, they come as varied as can be with the
better establishments mostly contained within the city centre
and open till late (about 3 am). Like the gourmet offerings,
they are excellent venues that are reasonably priced.
Vodikova, Zborovská, Lucerna Music Bar, Radost FX,
Rock Café and the ever-popular Blehradská provide endless
entertainment throughout the night and early hours of the
morning. Great time, fine moves and excellent golf awaits the
visitor to Prague!
THE DRIVE - DISCOVER THE NEW AUDI AVANTI RS6
ALTER EGO
WORDS LAU CHAK ONN PHOTOGRAPHS AUDI UNITED KINGDOM
FOR THOSE WHO WANT THE POWER WITHOUT THE ATTENTION,
THE NEW AUDI AVANTI RS6 IS YOUR SUPERCAR IN CLARK KENT GUISE.
74 TA | SEPT/OCT 2013
Not every man wants to be Tony Stark. Sure, most of us revel
and respect the intelligence, power, and wealth, but when you
really think about it, a real man does not need the attention
of pulling up in an Audi R8 at a nightclub in a fancy tux. For
those who opt for a classic black suit instead of the latest chicbling
design, who would rather sport a good old-fashioned set
of aviators over cyber-Oakleys, and keep a clean shaven mug
over an impossibly high-maintenance razor-shaped goatee –
for us, there is the Audi RS6 Avant.
Launched at a recent event in London by the immaculate
Gwyneth Paltrow, the Audi RS6 Avant is unique in its offering
of true supercar performance in the guise of a family-friendly
estate car. A true wolf in sheep’s clothing, this twotonne
car offers only a few subtle hints to its racing pedigree.
Its front grill is slightly larger than a standard A6 Avant, and
it comes with 20-inch forged alloy rims. Even at the back, the
car has the standard two-exhausts, appropriately blowing no
more hot air than its more reasonable counterpart. In fact, just
about the only real hint to the casual observer is the actual RS6
badge, which stands for RennSport – literally translated as
‘racing sport’, a mark of Audi’s top of the range performance
spec in each of its classes.
As someone once said though, it is the quiet ones you have
to watch out for. Because make no mistake, the subtle man is
a man nonetheless, and it is ingrained deep within our lizard
brains to go as fast as we possibly can. The Audi RS6 Avant
is less a sports sedan and more akin to the world’s subtlest supercar.
Underneath its non-descript hood is a twin-turbo V8
engine that shares most of its parts with the same power-plant
in the Audi R8 and the Lamborghini Gallardo. This beast uses
the full width of its 555 bhp and 700 Nm of torque to propel
it from a standstill all the way to 100 km/h in a blistering 3.9
seconds, the same sort of performance you get out of a Ferrari
California which, incidentally, costs more than twice as much.
The car can keep going up to an electronically limited top
speed of 250 km/h, or 305 km/h if you remove the limiter. ➢
From top to bottom — The 4-litre V8 TFSI engine features
Le Mans-winning fuel-injection technology, which enhances
fuel effi ciency, power and torque; An 8-speed tiptronic
transmission with DSP (Dynamic Shift Programme); Open the
power-operated boot lid by pressing the button on the radiooperated
remote control key, the button in the driver’s door
panel or the soft-touch button in the tailgate handle recess
“As someone once said, it is the quiet ones
you have to watch out for. The Audi RS6
Avant is less a sports sedan and more akin to
the world’s subtlest supercar.”
Clockwise from top — Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow
descended on Piccadilly in London to attend the launch of the
Audi RS6 Avant; RS 3-spoke fl at-bottomed leather multi-function
steering wheel with gear shift paddles in aluminium-look; Valcona
leather seats with honeycomb design
← That is less than 10 km/h shy of the R8 V10’s top speed, and
faster than most Porsches.
Erring back to the side of restraint, the car also features Audi’s
start-stop technology, which kills the engine when at a
standstill and props it up again when it is time to go. In tandem
with a spiffy new cylinder deactivation system that shuts
down four cylinders under light engine loads to save fuel, this
550 hp V8 monster achieves a remarkable 9.8 litres / 100 km
– 40% more fuel efficient than its V10 predecessor. To ensure
this power stays on the road like it is supposed to, the car utilises
Audi’s unique adaptive air suspension, which raises and
lowers the car on the fly to match the performance requirements
of the user, be it ‘Comfort’ or ‘Sports’.
Unlike most sports sedans however, the RS6 has not been
stripped bare of essentials in the ultimate pursuit of power.
Along with a smaller engine, and liberal use of lightweight
aluminum over steel, the car is a full 90 kilos lighter than a
normal A6. This leaves a bit of wiggle room for such creature
comforts as satellite navigation, air-conditioning, a 360-degree
parking camera, a Bose sound system, DAB digital radio
and a typically German luxurious plush leather/brushed metal
sound-proof interior – befitting of a man who does not need
to shout.
As men will always need their toys as well, the RS6 also
sports the latest version of MMI, Audi’s multimedia interface,
with a gesture-driven touchpad similar to the ones found at
Stark Enterprises. In this case, however, the interests were on
keeping the driver’s eyes on the road, instead of on a scroll
wheel typing out someone’s name.
And so this brings us to the definition of a man who has
come into his own. In the immortal words of Don Corleone,
“A man who doesn’t spend time with his family can never be a
real man”. With its spacious rear seats, front and rear airbags,
five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, a digital television tuner
and of course, a massive 565-litre boot to match its ridiculous
speed, the RS6 could indeed be the most manly of cars.
