City council staff and the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board want to trespass the vandals, who have been using angle grinders, winches and bolt cutters to gain entry to the area David Cartwright around Lake Roto Kohatu. After costing ratepayers more than $15,000 over three months, the community board does not want to spend more money cleaning up around the lake. Chairman David Cartwright said after receiving a memo from city council staff, the community board is now working on preventative measures, considering the serious nature and cost of the vandalism. “Are park rangers trained or skilled enough to deal with this? City council operations manager regional parks Kay Holder said city council staff will be working with the board on improving security at the access ways. She said that if it were appropriate, park rangers could trespass vandals from the reserve. Mr Cartwright said that the park rangers and members of the public know who the offending vandals were so they should be trespassed at least. “If these people are vandalising, we need to trespass (them) and . . . we do know who they are,” he said. Ms Holder confirmed that at least $15,000 had been spent in the summer season. She said that included the repair and replacement of damaged facilities as a result of people driving vehicles on garden beds and grassed areas, and removing signs, fences and bollards. “The incidents seem to be prevalent during fine summer evenings,” Ms Holder said. “However, given the high use of (the) park . . . for walking, dog exercising, jet skiing, water polo, fishing, sailing, etc, the antisocial behaviour is done by the minority but can have high impact,” she said. NEW YOUTH MANAGER A new manager has been appointed to 24-7 YouthWork, based at Burnside High School. The organisation aims to connect young people with mentors and role models. Josh Olds has taken over from previous manager Paul Holmes. A luncheon was held recently to farewell Mr Holmes.
