PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER COTSWOLD PRIMARY School pupil Matthew Growcott has continued his winning ways, taking gold in the under-11 section of the Oceania Squash Championships recently. The tournament was held at the Henderson Squash Club, Auckland, and attracted more than 200 entries across the age groups, with players from Australia, China, French Polynesia, Hong Kong, New Caledonia and Singapore making it a truly international event. Matthew, who was seeded fifth in the tournament, had to play his first match in the main draw against top seed, Oliver Dunbar, of Wellington, who he beat 3-0. His next match was against fourth seed Australian, Aryan Madan, where his fitness showed over the Australian, winning 3-1. In the final, he played sixth seed Reece Holmes, of Hawera, where he was more focused and consistent than his opponent, winning the title 3-0. An exciting prospect for the young Cantabrian is that he is still eligible for next year’s under-11 Oceania Squash Championships in Australia. It is the second squash tournament he has won this year, after winning the Squashways junior grade in March. He is coached by John Brown weekly on a one-on-one basis and is also part of Brown’s highperformance development squad. His main goals for the rest of the season include winning the Canterbury age groups title in Blenheim, South Island age groups in Oamaru, and the New Zealand age groups at his home squash club, Burnside, in October. Matthew is the youngest player to secure sponsorship from Head NZ this year, which supply his rackets, bags, shoes, strings, grips and apparel. • By Andrew King ST ANDREW’S College’s Sam Jenkins has been selected for the New Zealand under-16 basketball team. Jenkins will travel to Perth with the national age group squad in July to compete in the Australian state championships. Jenkins, who just turned 15, said when he found out he had made the top squad he couldn’t quite believe it. “Feels really humbling, I feel really blessed,” he said. His week is filled playing the game he loves, including two trainings for the senior St Andrew’s squad, one for the school’s under-17 team, and two trainings with Mark Dickel for the Mainland Eagles, a mixture of the best basketballers in the South Island. The 1.85m power forward also has a strong perimeter game. Jenkins said he wants to take every opportunity that comes along in the hope of getting into an American college and having a crack at the big time. “If I had to choose an NBA squad, I would like to play for the Milwaukee Bucks. It’s a good young team with a mixture of old heads,” he said. Dr Sarah Norton has joined the team to replace Dr Ben eggleston, who has relocated to Nelson. Sarah graduated from the University of Otago in 2010. She then worked for three years for a large group practice on the Gold Coast. Sarah spent three months travelling with her husband before settling in Christchurch. Sarah is passionate about providing excellent-quality dental care in a friendly and gentle manner and the other dentists say they feel privileged to have her on board. Dr Andrew paul has been locuming while Dr Kristine Bettle is on maternity leave and has now become a permanent member of the team. Andrew completed his studies at the University of Otago in 2009 and worked as a house surgeon in Christchurch Hospital before moving to Australia for four years where he worked in both hospital and private-practice environments. Hospital work inspired Andrew with a special interest in oral surgery and emergency dentistry while his work in private practice ensures his high level of quality general dentistry. Andrew has a very open approach to problem solving and is seen as an asset to the team. New hygienist, Victoria Ryan, has replaced Katy Monk who has relocated to Auckland. Victoria graduated from University of Otago in 2014 with a Bachelor of Oral Health. Before joining our team, Victoria worked as a dental therapist in Dunedin.
