12 News GROWTH: New fruit trees have been donated to the New Brighton Community Garden. Trees for food • By Georgia O’Connor- Harding NEW Brighton Community Garden has benefitted from the donation of $4000 worth of fruit trees to be distributed around community gardens, parks and schools. Nelson-based gardening nursery, Waimea Fruit Trees, donated the trees to help regrow the city back to its former gardening glory. They arrived and were first distributed last Friday to the New Brighton Community Garden, the Upper Riccarton Community Garden and Redwood Early Childcare Centre. The trees were excess stock from the nursery and otherwise would have been burnt if they were not donated to the city. Waimea Fruit Trees marketing and CPD sales manager Kate Marshall said it was nice to have Tuesday August 30 2016 been able to find a home for the trees. “I think it is great to provide trees, especially to schools. Getting kids into growing their own food, knowing where food comes from and health food choices is a really positive thing we totally support,” she said. The trees are set to thrive in the city’s climate and are not expected to have any issues adapting. “Warm summers and cold winters are really good for fruit trees. It makes them really productive so they will do well,” Mrs Marshall said. The project was initiated by well-known gardening personality Rachel Vogan, who got in touch with the company last year. She is a volunteer who’s passionate about maintaining the city’s garden image and believes the more fruit tress the better. Ms Vogan said about 50 trees were sent down to the city last season to be trialled at community gardens. “All reports are the trees are doing well,” she said. The trees are in high demand this year with more than 50 requests from schools alone. “There is more demand than what we have got fruit trees for. If they don’t get them this year, they will get them next year,” Ms Vogan said. The only cost not covered by the fruit tree company was the freight, which was met by the city council through the mayor’s office. Mrs Marshall said in spite of the earthquakes, Christchurch is still known as the garden city. “For us, it is still a strong area for plant sales and other nurseries would agree with us as well, so I don’t think that has changed,” she said. Having completed Computing for Free herself, tutor Jo Harkerss understands the challenges of returning to study. “For many people it is a huge stepping stone. They may have been made redundant or been out of the workforce after having children and here they can connect with other people and learn new skills that will make them more employable and give them confidence to try other things too. “They might have used computers in the past, but programmes change and skills need to be updated,” Jo says. “The hardest thing is for people to walk in the door. Then they realise that we are really nice! And that they can do it. You see people come in who feel afraid of computers, but we are here to help them to achieve. Study is not easy for everyone, but our programmes have a good balance of theory and practice, plus the programmes are self-paced to fit around other life commitments such as work and family.” Computing for Free also caters for adult learners who want to upskill for career progression, with programmes such as the National Certificate in Computing, which is a formal qualification that employers recognise and value. For students who find a passion for computing there are further programmes on offer at Ara from certificates to degrees. PEGASUS POST Tuesday August 30 2016 13 ADULT LEARNERS’ WEEK 2016 HE TANGATA MĀTAURANGA Learning Nation focus for Adult Learners’ Week 2016 Adult educators will be on the streets during Adult Learners’ Week/He Tangata Mātauranga, September 5-11, asking people what they would like to learn and recording their responses. The campaign called ‘Learning Nation’ will be a focus for this year’s celebration. It acknowledges that lifelong learning is vital for a rich, rewarding life and worthy of a conversation. Adult Learners’ Week/He Tangata Mātauranga, celebrates all adult learning whether it’s upskilling for a better job, preparing for further study, improving life skills or having fun. It is supported by the New Zealand National Commission for UNESCO and incorporates International Literacy Day on September 8. Every year thousands of ACE providers, educators, learners and supporters organise a huge range of events to highlight the value of adult learning. The Government priorities for Adult and Community Education (ACE) include literacy, numeracy, English language (ESOL), te Reo Māori and sign language. Providers all over New Zealand offer learning in these core areas and many others. Courses not eligible for funding are often run by volunteers.
