Nearly 8000 dogs in east

ABOUT A quarter of the city’s
registered 31,800 dogs are homed
in the eastern suburbs, with the
most popular breed in the city
being labradors.
Newly-released statistics on
dog ownership show that there
are 7916 dogs in the east only
slightly behind the north-west
area of the city, which has 7953.
The top populated suburb in
the east is Burwood with 784
dogs, which is also the eighth
highest in the city.
Following Burwood, Linwood
has 720, Parklands has 655, and
North New Brighton has a dog
population of 620.
The south-west and southeastern
suburbs of the city
make up 17 and 19 per cent

dog, and lead by a population
of about 2000. They have been
the favourite breed for the last
four years.
Behind labradors are
staffordshire bull terriers, then
bichon frise, border collie, jack
russell and fox terrier.
The most popular suburbs for
dogs in the city are St Albans
with 1452, Spreydon with 1114,
Belfast with 975, and Papanui
with 946.
The total number of registered
dogs in the city as of August 16
is 31,859, which has not seen
much variance since before the
earthquakes in 2009.

SEARCH FOR ATTACKERS
Police are searching for two men
after a man was robbed and
assaulted on Wainoni Rd on August
20. “The man was hit from behind
with an unknown object at a bus
stop on Wainoni Rd, Aranui, at
about 7pm. The offenders stole
his phone and wallet,” a police
spokesperson said. The man, in his
20s, received minor injuries. If you

WAINONI RD REPAIRS
Starting tomorrow, Wainoni Rd
near the Avondale Golf Course,
will be closed for about three days
while maintenance is carried
out by Stronger Christchurch
Infrastructure Rebuild Team. The
work will not impact residents’
power, wastewater, phone,
water, or gas services. More

nz. Meanwhile, Farnborough St,
in Aranui, will be closed for four
weeks from today while SCIRT
renews part of the road. The road
will also be closed during working
hours of 7am to 6pm for Monday
to Friday. Driveway access will be
completely restricted from residents
for a week. The expected end
date for the project will be
September 28.
