Nearly 8000 dogs in east<br />

ABOUT A quarter of the city’s<br />

registered 31,800 dogs are homed<br />

in the eastern suburbs, with the<br />

most popular breed in the city<br />

being labradors.<br />

Newly-released statistics on<br />

dog ownership show that there<br />

are 7916 dogs in the east only<br />

slightly behind the north-west<br />

area of the city, which has 7953.<br />

The top populated suburb in<br />

the east is Burwood with 784<br />

dogs, which is also the eighth<br />

highest in the city.<br />

Following Burwood, Linwood<br />

has 720, Parklands has 655, and<br />

North New Brighton has a dog<br />

population of 620.<br />

The south-west and southeastern<br />

suburbs of the city<br />

make up 17 and 19 per cent<br />

The most popular suburbs for<br />

dogs in the city are St Albans<br />

with 1452, Spreydon with 1114,<br />

Belfast with 975, and Papanui<br />

with 946.<br />

The total number of registered<br />

dogs in the city as of <strong>August</strong> 16<br />

is 31,859, which has not seen<br />

much variance since before the<br />

earthquakes in 2009.<br />

Police are searching for two men<br />

after a man was robbed and<br />

assaulted on Wainoni Rd on <strong>August</strong><br />

20. “The man was hit from behind<br />

with an unknown object at a bus<br />

stop on Wainoni Rd, Aranui, at<br />

about 7pm. The offenders stole<br />

his phone and wallet,” a police<br />

spokesperson said. The man, in his<br />

20s, received minor injuries. If you<br />

have any information you think the<br />

police would find helpful, phone<br />

WAINONI RD REPAIRS<br />

Starting tomorrow, Wainoni Rd<br />

near the Avondale Golf Course,<br />

will be closed for about three days<br />

while maintenance is carried<br />

out by Stronger Christchurch<br />

Infrastructure Rebuild Team. The<br />

work will not impact residents’<br />

power, wastewater, phone,<br />

water, or gas services. More<br />

in Aranui, will be closed for four<br />

weeks from today while SCIRT<br />

renews part of the road. The road<br />

will also be closed during working<br />

hours of 7am to 6pm for Monday<br />

to Friday. Driveway access will be<br />

completely restricted from residents<br />

for a week. The expected end<br />

date for the project will be<br />
