‘Fearless’ Andy makes news
North Beach surfer
in Hawaiian shark
attack drama
THE FRIEND of a Christchurch
holiday-maker who rushed to
the aid of a woman attacked
by a shark in Hawaii says he is
“fearless”.
North Beach resident Andy
Chapman was surfing at Mākaha
Beach on Oahu Island when a
woman was attacked by a shark
about 100m from him.
He paddled towards her after
she screamed for help, but before
he got there, she was pulled from
the water by other surfers and
lifeguards.
It is believed the 51-year-old
woman, a regular swimmer at
the beach, may have been attacked
by a 3m tiger shark. She
suffered gashes to her shoulder,
upper back and forearm.
Burwood-Pegasus Community
Board member Tim Sintes has
known Mr Chapman for about
35 years and was a groomsman at
his wedding.
Mr Sintes said Mr Chapman
was “fearless” and a real “down
to earth” guy.
“What he did in Hawaii did
not surprise me at all,” Mr Sintes
said.
“He would have been back in
the water the next day.”
Mr Chapman, 57, was on
holiday with his wife, Ineke, who
is the chairwoman of the North
Beach Residents’ Association.
Mr Chapman told the New
Zealand Herald the woman
looked as if she had been slit
open with a razor blade in about
three places and there was a lot
of blood.
“In the water, there is a definite
code of looking after others. A
swimmer on their own seems to
be a lot more vulnerable and also
will have more limbs in the water
acting as bait,” Mr Chapman
said.
He said he had never experienced
anything like this, but it
would not deter him from getting
back in the water.
Mr Sintes said the Chapmans
were keen surfers in both New
Brighton and Kaikoura, where
they go most weekends.
“Both of them have got this
incredible enthusiasm for life.
You hear the saying of work
hard, play hard, and that
would sum them up perfectly,”
he said.
A similar attack happened at
Mākaha Beach six months ago,
when a 10-year-old boy was
mauled by a shark.
ALERT TO CHRISTCHURCH
HOMEOWNERS:
EQC is now asking homeowners
to assess own damage.
"Remedial works letters"
sent to those who've
complained about repair work
carried out by Fletchers EQR
Ask yourself: Why after 6 years
does EQC give you just 30 days to
assess your own damage? We say
it's to reduce EQC's liabilities through
homeowners not really knowing full
quake or repair damage.
• Do you know anything about
foundation damage to your home?
• Can you determine any damage to
your slab under carpets?
• Or if your piles need replacing?
Do you know if your ring foundation
is cracked on the inside?
DON’T SIGN
ANYTHING
UNTIL YOU
TALK TO US
To help you stand up to EQC we
are offering a fREE damage
assessment to all clients who sign
with us in the next 30 days.*
