Community board’s low attendance
leads to lack of decision-making
• By Fraser Walker-Pearce
A LACK of attendance
from Hagley-Ferrymead
Community Board members
meant a decision on a major
road upgrade – which could
take away 70 per cent of car
parks – has been delayed.
A joint community board
meeting was called to discuss
whether the North Avon Rd
renewal project, which is likely
to take away 40 to 70 of the 100
car parks available along the
road, should go ahead.
The meeting between
Hagley-Ferrymead, Shirley-
Papanui, and Burwood-
Pegasus community boards
was held last Thursday at the
city council building.
But a decision on the
repairs, worth about $2.9
million, could not be made
because only city councillor
Yani Johanson, chairwoman
Sara Templeton and member
Alexandra Davids were present
for Hagley-Ferrymead.
City councillor for the
Hagley-Ferrymead Ward Paul
Lonsdale couldn’t attend the
meeting and community board
member Brenda Lowe-Johnson
joined the meeting too late.
ROAD RENEWAL: North Avon Rd could receive a multi-million dollar upgrade.
To be able to discuss a
decision, all community
boards had to have at least four
members present.
Cr Lonsdale said he wanted
to be at the combined meeting,
but could not make it.
“I would’ve (attended), but
I had issues with pre-booked
meetings and development
issues in the city centre,” he
said.
Do you own a property
with unrepaired
earthquake damage?
City councillor David East
said it was disappointing to
be unable to make a decision,
but the low attendance was
understandable.
“It’s a shame we’ll have to
reconvene, but (the Hagley-
Ferrymead Community
Board is) only five-strong
anyway. They used to have
seven, but one went overseas
and one lives way out of town,”
he said.
Community consultation
showed the highest priority for
concerned residents was the
loss of parking spaces.
With only one meeting
left before the October
elections, it means the new
city council will make the
final decision based on
the community boards
recommendations.
