Swim club’s money problem
• By Fraser Walker-Pearce
THE QE II Swim Club is
struggling to stay afloat paying
$20,000 to hire the Christ’s
College school pool.
The club was moved out of
QE II Stadium
after the facility
sustained extensive
damage
in the February
22, 2011, earthquake.
Lawrence
Taylor
It has since
been shifted
around
temporary homes at city
council-owned facilities Jellie
Park Recreation and Sports
Centre, Graham Condon and
now Christ’s College.
The club has made
applications to both the
Coastal-Burwood and Papanui-
Innes community boards
asking for financial assistance
to pay a $20,000 a year charge
from Christ’s College to use its
facilities for 15 hours a week.
QE II Swim Club president
Lawrence Taylor said the
funds being granted by the
community boards meant “the
club keeps going.”
He said it’s either the funds
are granted or swimming fees
POOL FOR RENT: The cost of hiring the Christ’s College pool is the main cause of the QE II
Swim Club’s financial strife.
at the club are raised.
“Before the earthquake, we
were the top junior club in New
Zealand for two years in a row.
So we’ve been taken from that
level to how do we survive. It’d
be ideal to be self sufficient,
but at the moment, it’s just not
possible,” Mr Taylor said.
“We can’t expect our
swimmers to pay what it is
actually costing us to use the
pools, so we’re having to go to
outside sources to help. When
we get to go home (to QE II),
we’ll then be able to have the
feeder programmes up and
running and we won’t be under
too much financial stress,” he
said.
With a club membership of
around 100, he said another
problem the club faced was
room for all swimmers.
“The biggest issue our club
faces is swim space. There’s
just a lack of swim space in
the city at the moment. We’re
swimming out of [Christ’s
College] in the school term
and, in the school holidays,
we’re in Rawhiti School pool,”
he said.
In Brief
BROMLEY CEMETERY
The future of Bromley Cemetery
is still undecided. The cemetery is
at capacity and city council staff
have not undertaken any plans to
develop the site for further burials
or ash interments. City council
neighbourhood and sports parks
operations manager Al Hardy said
it does not mean that the site of
the old Sexton’s House cannot be
used in the future. He also said
adjacent cemeteries, Memorial Park
and Ruru Lawn, are still open and
have significant capacity for future
interments.
STOP BANKS UPDATE
The city council is hoping to start
upgrading stop banks south-east of
Bridge St, South New Brighton, early
next year. Head of strategic policy
Helen Beaumont said the type of
work has not been decided and city
council staff are still informing a
“small number of residents.” Wider
public notification will begin when
there is more information.
Rawhiti School Enrolment Scheme
In order to avoid overcrowding, or the likelihood
of overcrowding, the board of Rāwhiti School has
adopted an enrolment scheme, which has been
approved by the Ministry of Education.
Under this scheme, students will be enrolled if
they live within the home zone described below:
• From the intersection of Anzac Drive and
Frosts Road
• North on Frosts Road to Beach Road
• East on Beach Road to Marine Parade
• South on Marine Parade to Rodney Street
• West on Rodney Street to Union Street
• North on Union Street to Owles Terrace
• North West on Owles Terrace to New
Brighton Road
• North West on New Brighton Road to Anzac
Drive
• North on Anzac Drive to Frosts Road
The enrolment scheme may be viewed on our
website www.rawhiti.school.nz or at the school
office where copies of the scheme are also
available.
Applications for out of zone places are now
being invited for those students who will become
eligible for enrolment during the period January
30 –April 13th, 2017.
The deadline for receipt of applications for out of
zone places is December 7, 2016.
If a ballot for out of zone places is required, it
will be held on December 9, 2016. Parents will
be informed of the outcome of the ballot within
three school days of the ballot being held.
The board has determined that 5 places are likely
to be available for out of zone students in Term 1.
The school operates an approved special
programme for Te Tikanga Rua Reo (Level 2
Maori Medium) and expects that there will be
about 10 places available in the programme for
out of zone students next year.
