6 Tuesday November 29 2016 PEGASUS POST Youngsters set to make waves SOME OF the country’s best young surfers will descend on North Beach on Saturday for the South Island Primary School Champs. A number of local surfers are among the favourites for the event with Chisnallwood Intermediate’s Jai Oakley and Myka Black from New Brighton Catholic School the two hot favourites for the year 8 title. Oakley is the reigning champ but Black has been performing strongly on the NZ Grom Series. Another surfer to watch out for is the ever-improving James Millar also from New Brighton Catholic. Another local will fancy her chances in the year 7 and 8 girls’ competition when Chisnallwood’s Lily Robertson continues her battle with Sumner School’s Ava Henderson. Henderson won the recent Canterbury Primary School Championships but Robertson got one over her North Wai teammate at the Duke Festival of Surfing back in March. In the year 7 boys, the favourites look to be Broomfield School’s Liam Heasley and Dara O’Malley from Rawhiti School. The year 6 and under boys (normally the biggest division) will be a battle between two Northside Boardrider teammates Jack McKenzie (Pegasus Bay School) and Campbell Heasley (Broomfield). Heasley, the current New Zealand year 6 champion, will be looking to assert his dominance in this division. Don’t discount two Rawhiti NATIONAL CHAMPS: National year 6 champion Campbell Heasley will be one to watch this weekend. The event, in its 13th year, is run by the North Wai Boardriders Club. This year the club is expecting big numbers, with the inclusion of a large team of surfers from Buller Boardriders Club. As well as Westport, there will be competitors from North Canterbury, Kaikoura and Dunedin. Due to the recent upheaval in Kaikoura, North Wai has offered free entry and accommodation to any competitors travelling from that area. The inclusion of 10 West Coast surfers puts a whole new twist on the competition. SPORTS RIDE IT: North Wai Boardriders club up and comer Jai Oakley will look to push for a medal placing. Pupils benefit from new sports field donation LINWOOD NORTH and South New Brighton are two of 11 primary schools in Canterbury to have been gifted new sports turfs. SKY Television has gifted the turfs to schools that lost or incurred significant damage to playing fields in the earthquakes. Worth almost $20,000 each, the turfs are part of the company’s $1 million, five-year commitment to help repair the city. SKY director of corporate communication Kirsty Way said the turfs would make a big difference to the schools. “It is very important for children to be active and outdoors and Sport Canterbury can use these turfs to help develop new programmes to increase sports participation,” she said. Sport Canterbury chief executive Julyan Falloon said the donation will allow his organisation to deliver new activities to the mostly lowdecile schools. “A number of schools lost their outdoor play areas in the earthquakes. In addition, population shifts meant some schools saw their decile rating change, which meant they lost funding, while others had an influx of pupils, resulting in new buildings taking up space on the playing fields,” said Falloon. The other schools who received turfs were Wharenui, Riccarton, Northcote, Waltham, Bishopdale, Papanui, Hornby, Rolleston and Kaiapoi Borough. SKY’s $1 million commitment to the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust saw it give $200,000 to repair Garrick Park, Woolston, in 2013.
