2018 GALA
What an amazing night it was at Spiegel Farms for
the third annual Year-End Awards Gala, the perfect
venue for our members. This historic equestrian
venue dons huge oriental rugs as you walk into the
aisle ways, which are filled with vintage wagons,
eclectic artwork, and beautiful wrought iron stalls
filled with fun farm antiques. In the banquet room
the decoration was nothing short of elegant!
With around 100 members in attendance, the room
was full of excited conversation and cheer. It was really good to be able to catch up with
members we haven’t seen since show season and celebrate those that were winning year-end
award prizes! Each attendee received two raffle tickets, an FRC t-shirt and locally crafted
Dressage-inspired chocolates as favors!
Cocktail hour included a delicious and colorful Crudité and Pimento cheese platter. People
snacked and settled in while de-thawing from the frigid temperatures outside. There was a lot
of buzz around the raffle table as people decided which prizes to
try to win.
There was a $100 gift certificate to Huckleberries Restaurant-
YUM!
A beautiful Red Barn Dressage Bridle with blingy brow band from
our FRC Sponsor the Farmhouse Tack Shop.
The ‘Bucket of Barn Goodies’ donated by FRC Sponsor Landrum
Hardware was overflowing with odds and ends that you always
need around the barn from an
insulated spigot cover to spray
bottles and extension cords!
Dinner was catered by Stone Soup and did not disappoint!
Guests enjoyed an assortment of Parmesan-Herb Baked
Salmon, Vegetable Lasagna, Chicken Florentine Pasta, fresh
spring greens salad, and to top it off- there was even a mashed
potato bar. Dessert was assorted treats, bars, and of course,
there were horse-shaped cookies! (Good thing we don’t have to
squeeze into our show breeches for another two months!)
As we dined, outgoing FRC President
Jodi Lees gave a recap of the year-end
report, detailing all the awesome things
that FRC did in 2017. After this she
passed the torch, or microphone, to the
new incoming 2018 FRC President
Cathy Schwartz. Cathy talked briefly
about how excited she was to take the
reins and gave a little insight on some
of the new and excited things the FRC has planned for 2018.
She gave a heartfelt farewell and thank you to the retiring board members and introduced the
new members.
Year-end awards were next, the moment we had all been waiting for! We are so happy to
honor the hard-working horse and rider teams that come to compete at our shows. Awards
were given to riders who placed in the top four for each division. These included Western
Dressage, Introductory, Training Level, First Level, Second Level & Up Dressage Divisions;
Starter, Beginner Novice, Novice and Training Level Eventing Dressage; and the Starter, BN,
Novice, and Training Level Combined Tests. Each winner received a totally unique FRC
Platter, Bowl, or Potted Succulent depicting their discipline. The ceramic prizes were made by
a local potter and we were really impressed with the craftsmanship!
Competitors were not the only ones
to receive awards, our tireless
volunteers were rewarded for their
service as well. Volunteers can log
hours to reach a certain level of
recognition at the end of each show
season. Our top two volunteers
who reached the Gold-Level status
were
Sarah Zordan & Dave Mullen, who each received an
embroidered FRC Jacket that would make any chilly equestrian
drool. Silver-Level volunteers received an FRC vest, and
Bronze-Level Volunteers were gifted with an awesome showquality
FRC Polo shirt.
We ended the evening in high spirits. Raffle tickets were
drawn and our favorite photographer Erik Olsen won the
‘Bucket of Barn Goodies’ from Landrum Hardware.
Tara Boyce won the
$100 gift certificate to
Huckleberries
Restaurant.
Brandon Knox took home that beautiful
blingy Dressage Bridle from The
Farmhouse.
After awards and prizes, the DJ cranked it up and we all hit the dance floor.
Our members proved that we know how to do more than dance in the sand! You would never
guess how many FRC members can do the ‘Wobble’! (And look good doing it too!) The
Annual Awards Gala was a huge success and we are so grateful for all our member and
competitors that make it possible!
Community Support
Sunny skies and cool temperatures were perfect for spying trash and finding recyclables when members
of Foothills Riding Club walked the road for their “Adopt-A-Highway clean up day. Seven stalwart pickers
scoured both sides of Moore Road in the Green Creek area on December 16 2017 and were rewarded with a
truck full of trash. Only one treasure was found – a perfect socket for a socket wrench. Picker, Sue Mullen, found
the most interesting trash – a small television.
Organizer Hatsie Goodrich happily reported, “Everyone worked hard to clean this lovely country road. We even
had a passerby offer his dumpster for disposal.”
Foothills Riding Club (FRC) has taken on this worthy project as another way for the club to give back to the
community. Clean up days will be scheduled from time to time and announced on the FRC web site. You can
check out the site at www.foothillsridingclub.org. Another clean up day will be scheduled in early spring of
2018. Anyone interested in helping can contact Hatsie at info@foothillsridingclub.org.
2018 Foothills Riding Club Board
At a day-long retreat, we firmed up show dates,
brainstormed clinic and educational opportunities for
the membership, as well as expanding our Community
Outreach Programs. Stay tuned for dates and info!
We are looking into ways to streamline how we do
business and become more “mobile friendly and tech
friendly!"
Our website will be in “suspended animation” for a
short time as we develop and launch our new more
user friendly site. Bare-bones information will continue to be available in the interim.
Improved PayPal functionality and mobile online paying is coming to FRC functions soon!
New Divisions & fun opportunities are in store for the 2018 and beyond show seasons!
Building upon our community outreach programs with new fundraisers and events to give back to our
amazing community!!
Hold on to your horses as we gallop into 2018!! We are very excited and hope you are too!
Remember to follow us on FB and contact any board member with your random ideas.....we love
them!!
CALLING HUNTER PACE AND
TRAIL RIDING ENTHUSIASTS!
FRC is hosting a Hunter Pace as part of the Western Carolina Hunter Pace series and we
need YOU to help with some trail clearing! The pace will be held at Sara and Gerry Zordan’s
Circle Z farm, formally known as Fox’s Lair farm. These trails haven’t been publicly open in
over 10 years and we’re excited that the Zordan’s are opening their new farm to us!
The current date for the Hunter pace is set for the first Saturday of February. The trails are
mostly cleared but we need some hands at cutting and removing low-hanging branches by
February. We will also be looking for volunteers day-of for start/stop times, recording, sign-in,
parking, and mid-way pit stop crew.
Visit www.wchpace.org for more info on this series.
Contact Jillian at jillian.j.woolridge@gmail.com if you would be willing to do a half or full day of
trail cleaning in November or December to help our first hunter pace be a success! We will
need volunteers closer to the February date as well, so stay tuned!!!
