SOUTHERN VIEW
Rowley School – what’s next?
Elections 16
In the lead up to the local body elections, Southern
View is asking candidates their views on topical
issues within the community. This week, we ask
Spreydon Ward city council and Spreydon-Cashmere
Community Board candidates whether they think
Rowley Avenue School should move to a Halswell
site or be rebuilt on its current site, and why. If you
have an issue you want candidates to cover in the
Halswell Ward send it to caitlin.miles@starmedia.kiwi
Phil Clearwater: Spreydon Ward city
council candidate
“Christchurch people have had enough
of our valued, local schools, which are an
integral part of our communities, being
closed. The cultural and social impact of
potentially closing Rowley School is totally
unacceptable. Rowley parents want their
children to attend a primary school in their
own community. Pre-schools in Hoon Hay/Rowley are set
up so those children feed into Rowley School. City council
want kids to be able to walk or bike to school instead of
parents taking and collecting them by car, adding to traffic
congestion. The Ministry of Education must listen to
children, parents, teachers the community board and our
city council.“
Melanie Coker: Spreydon
Ward community board
candidate
Rowley Avenue School lives at
the heart of a proudly bilingual
and multi-cultural community,
and mirrors its surroundings
by offering a unique Māori
and Samoan bilingual learning
environment. Rowley’s special character is
enhanced by supportive relationships between
students, families and teachers. All students
are encouraged to embrace their own culture
and language and be proud of their identity. It
is impossible to fathom the potential closure
of Rowley and how its students will retain
their culture at a larger school in Halswell,
3km away. The Rowley community will stand
together to fight this and I support them
whole-heartedly – Rowley united!
Karolin Potter: Spreydon
Ward community candidate
At the last meeting of the
Spreydon-Heathcote Community
Board, I moved a resolution in
support of Rowley School and
its retention as the centre of its
community in Rowley, Hoon
Hay. This was carried unanimously
by the board. I believe that Rowley’s
support of its tamariki and whanau and their
diverse languages and cultures is unique and
invaluable and that would be lost if the school
was to move or disappear from its geographic
location. Rowley is not just a school, it is
Rowley’s beating heart.
Catherine White: Spreydon
Ward community board
candidate
Rowley Avenue School should not
be shifted but should stay in the
area of which it is the hub. Bus
fares are too dear in Christchurch,
particularly for poorer families
to have to bus children to school.
This school deserves significant financial investment,
as it is loved by pupils and parents.
Patricia Siataga: Spreydon Ward city
council candidate
Upon attending this workshop, I noted that
the shifting of it was off the table and the
school consultation was to have a rebuild
on their current site. The consultation document
provided a good opportunity for the
community to feed back how it could look.
I can proudly say that I have strong connections
to this community both professional and personally. It
is unique in being a bilingual and multi-cultural school that
services the community surrounding it.
But wait…there’s more
This stunning home is for those who want a life less ordinary. Refurbished to a high
standard, with a state of the art kitchen, this is an entertainers delight. Leading off
the kitchen dining area is a large patio with barbecue. This has been completely
encased at the front with frameless glass to ensure no matter what the wind you can
enjoy these summer evenings to come. The views have been made the centre piece
of each of the living rooms, then to add to the space there is a purpose built room for
entertaining/gym/teenage retreat with its own butlers sink and bar area. There is
easily room for a pool table here. The main house has three double bedrooms and
three bathrooms. Extensive decks allow you to choose where you will sit to follow
the sun around during the day. As they say on the TV ads ‘but wait there is more’ so
it is for this home. A completely self-contained flat is on the lower level. This has its
own kitchen, large living, two bedrooms, bathroom & laundry. Access to this is via
the lower driveway and there is double enclosed carport plus ample parking at this
