Our core
business at
Cashmere High
School is student
learning and
achievement.
This education
is based on our
core values,
and learning
experiences that
can go beyond
the classroom
to help craft
our students
into confident,
well-rounded,
high-achieving,
communityfocused
citizens.
Our values-based education in action
The four core values of Cashmere High
School are: Citizenship, Opportunity,
Vibrancy and Excellence (known as
“COVE” for short). These values are built
into our school’s culture and programmes
as we seek to develop not only the intellect
but also the character of our students. We
provide the opportunities to promote and
live out these values.
Citizenship is lived out by our students
through a range of actions, such as: our
student-organised “Shave for a Cure”
which this year raised approximately
$12,000 for the Leukaemia and Blood
Cancer Organisation; raising over $8000 in
the annual World Vision 40 Hour Famine;
volunteering with the UC Student Army to
restore Willowbank’s Takahe enclosure;
our school’s Peer Mentoring and Peer
Leaders programmes for seniors to mentor
and support our younger students; raising
money and donations for the Christchurch
City Mission; leading at our community
memorial services for ANZAC Day; active
participation in the annual NZ Model United
Nations; and students forming teams to
challenge themselves in the fun annual
Mud Run. There are always so many
vibrant opportunities for our students to
develop their character, social skills and
sense of citizenship.
Sustaining
leadership
Cashmere High School’s student-led
eco-Driver programme has already been
recognised by winning the prestigious
international Zayed Future Energy Award
for 2016.
The work of these students has
now been awarded the Environment
Canterbury and Ngai Tahu Sustainability
Group Award for 2016, in recognition
of youth leadership in the area of
sustainability.
Our school is already going solar, with
100 solar panels installed on the roofs of
some classroom blocks. This has been
funded by the prize money from the
Zayed Future Energy Award. The school
is planning to install a wind turbine, and
has also purchased some innovative
kinetic energy floor tiles, all initiatives that
provide leadership roles for our students,
reduces energy consumption and
provides positive educational modelling.
Wearable arts stun
As part of our school’s
Inter-House competitions,
our students designed and
made some stunning creative
entries for our school’s
Fashion and Wearable Arts
Competition. Under the
theme of ‘Twisted Disney’
students showcased some
outstanding
entries. Other
events in
our school’s
Inter-House
competition
include: an
athletics
day, spelling
competition,
Lip Sync, cross
country run
and House
Olympics.
Winter sporting successes
As the winter sports season comes to a
close there are a range of achievements
the school will be celebrating, such as:
our rock climbers who won both the Boys’
and Girls’ South Island Championship
titles; Boys Football teams winning the
Regional Junior Title and runners-up in the
1st XI competition; our Boys Epee Team
came 3rd at the New Zealand Fencing
Tournament; our Badminton Boys Senior
Team won the Canterbury Premier competition
title; and various teams enjoyed great
success at the many national tournaments
they attended across the country.
Hitting all the right notes
Early in Term 3, Cashmere took part in the Southern Jam
Jazz Competition in Blenheim, entering two jazz combos,
‘Blue Trumpet’ and ‘Jam Sandwich’. Both groups won
gold awards and Blue Trumpet also won the best combo
at the festival and best group overall. Blue Trumpet were
also awarded best original composition written by Callum
McInnes, and best Jazz pianist (Finn Richwood), while
Jam Sandwich were awarded best Saxophone soloist
(Aidan McCulloch).
Cashmere sisters Chena Rae (Year 12) and Mana Rae
(Year 9) are part of a chamber music group named South
Island Regional Finalists which gained them entry to the
national finals to be held at the Auckland Town Hall. Being
selected for this event from a field of over 700 groups
nationwide is quite an achievement.
Our Barbershop Girls Chorus and Girls Quartet (Jessica
Tozer, Nina Noble, Emily-Jane Stockman and Emma
Hartshaw) won the top prizes at the Canterbury Regional
Barbershop Competition during Term 2.
Every year Cashmere has several students audition
for the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Symphony
Orchestra. This year we had six very talented students
make it into the Orchestra: Tom Fastier (Bass), Monica
Hoetjes (Clarinet), Sam Gibbs (Percussion), Briana Steven
(Percussion), Nina Krauss (Harp) and Cheena Rae (Flute
& Piccolo).
