PHOTO: BURNSIDE HIGH Connetics Shield-holders miss national competition • By Andrew King BURNSIDE HIGH is ruing poor early season form which has cost them a spot in the nationals. But coach David Williams is not looking to blame outside forces, saying it was gutting but entirely their own fault. Four teams were selected from the Connetics first XI football competition to compete at the Boys Lotto Premier Football Tournament in Napier from September 4-8. “A draw against Shirley and letting Cashmere back into the game, which also ended up being a draw, didn’t help. If either of those games had of been a win instead of a draw, then we would be in Napier,” he said. St Andrew’s College, St Thomas, Lincoln High and Cashmere High have all made the cut for the 32-team national tournament. The teams were picked during round eight when the top four included the selected teams. Burnside were fifth in round eight, but have since moved to third after wins against Middleton Grange and Lincoln High. In their match against Lincoln, Burnside also won the Connetics Shield for the first time. However, Burnside were denied a wildcard entry into nationals, with your one stop shop! Nelson’s Waimea College and Wellington College snapping up the last two spots. “We will now focus on trying to win the Rex Dawkins tournament in Palmerston North,” Williams said. That tournament runs at the same time as nationals. Williams said with two games and a bye left in the Connetics competition, the goal is to finish strong and hold on to the Connetics Shield. The competition now takes a threeweek break and will resume on July 26 for three rounds before the finals. Burnside will not want to let go of the shield when they face Christ’s at 5.45pm at the Christchurch Football Centre, where all league games are being played this year. Christchurch Boys’ High will take on Lincoln at 4pm, St Bede’s will play Shirley at 5.45pm, St Andrew’s will try to stay top of the table when they face St Thomas at 7.30pm and Papanui will resume their season against Riccarton at 7.30pm.
